Zaborin: A Secluded Haven of Modern Japanese Luxury in Hokkaido

Nestled deep within the serene Hanazono Forest of Kutchan, Japan, Zaborin stands as an exceptional ryokan that masterfully blends traditional Japanese hospitality with striking modernist design. This Michelin Key Two-Keys property consistently garners effusive praise for its tranquil ambiance, impeccable service, and deeply immersive experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Zaborin consistently receives outstanding ratings, often scoring in the "Exceptional" range across various platforms. Guests frequently describe their stay as a "dream," "unforgettable," and "incredible," highlighting a pervasive sentiment of serene luxury and unparalleled relaxation. The overall consensus points to Zaborin as a top-tier destination for discerning travelers seeking a secluded and refined Japanese retreat.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enchanted by several core aspects of Zaborin:

  • Design & Ambiance: The ryokan's architecture, by Makoto Nakayama, is lauded for its contemplative mood and seamless integration with the surrounding natural environment, whether dusted in snow or in full bloom. The minimalist concrete structures, internal courtyards, and expansive windows expertly frame the stunning Hokkaido landscape.
  • Private Onsens: A standout feature, each of the 15 villas boasts both an indoor and an outdoor private natural hot spring bath, fed by volcanic springs known for their high-quality water. This allows for an intimate and deeply relaxing onsen experience amidst nature. Guests consistently praise the perfect temperature and intimate setting of the outdoor onsens.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff's attentiveness and dedication to ensuring a perfect stay are frequently commended. Many guests note the hospitality is "even high for Japanese standards" and describe the service as "impeccable" and "world-class."
  • Natural Setting: The secluded location in Hanazono wood, offering views of Mt. Niseko-Annupuri and the surrounding forest, provides a profound sense of tranquility and a fresh mountain air experience.

3. Room Quality

Zaborin offers 15 spacious villas, each functioning as a private suite. Guests can choose between "Washitsu" (traditional Japanese futons on tatami mats) or "Yoshitsu" (Western-style beds) configurations. Rooms are equipped with a blend of traditional aesthetics and modern comforts, including flatscreen televisions, Bluetooth sound systems, and Nespresso machines. Reviewers consistently highlight the generosity of space, the comfortable beds, and the exquisite design of the bathrooms, featuring grey slate and wooden sliding doors. Each suite also includes a well-stocked mini-bar with complimentary local Hokkaido juices. However, some minor criticisms have noted awkwardly placed light switches, hidden mini-bar and coffee/tea access, and chaise lounges that face the TV rather than the outdoor view in some rooms.

4. Dining Experience

The culinary experience at Zaborin is a cornerstone of its appeal. Led by locally born, globally trained Chef Yoshihiro Seno, the ryokan offers a unique "kita kaiseki" multi-course dinner, a northern interpretation of traditional Kyoto kaiseki dining. Meals emphasize seasonal Hokkaido produce, often foraged directly by the chef and his team. Guests consistently rate the food as "superb," "amazing," and "five stars," with some suggesting dinners are "worth 3 Michelin stars." Breakfast is a similarly elaborate Japanese affair. Dining takes place in secluded private rooms, often overlooking the illuminated pond or forest, enhancing the intimate experience. One recurring minor complaint is the lack of lunch service, which can be an inconvenience for guests staying longer than one day, as there are no nearby compatible lunch options.

5. Service & Staff

The hospitality at Zaborin is a recurring theme of high praise. Staff are described as "friendly and helpful," "exceptional," and "impeccable." Guests appreciate the personalized and attentive service, which contributes significantly to the overall sense of being well cared for. Multi-lingual staff are also available, with English being spoken.

6. Location & Accessibility

Zaborin is situated in the Hanazono Forest, part of the broader Niseko area, renowned for its winter sports. While offering a secluded atmosphere, it remains accessible. It is approximately a two-hour drive from New Chitose Airport (Sapporo, Hokkaido). The ryokan is closest to the Hanazono ski area, about 7 minutes away by car, and provides a complimentary shuttle service to and from the Hanazono Ski Centre during the ski season. Complimentary transfers from Kutchan train station (a 10-15 minute drive) are also available upon request for check-in and check-out. Beyond skiing, the Niseko region offers year-round activities such as golf, hiking, cycling, and visits to the Nikka Whisky Distillery in Yoichi.

7. Value & Pricing

Zaborin is positioned as a luxury property, with room rates reflecting its exclusive offerings. The average price of a room has been noted around $1252, with prices potentially ranging from approximately $1070 to $1873 per night, depending on the season and booking platform. A more specific range noted is 46,100 - 111,200 JPY per guest per night, including dinner and breakfast. Despite the higher cost compared to average hotels in Niseko, guests frequently affirm that the exceptional quality, unique amenities like private onsens, and unparalleled service make it a "worthwhile investment" for a truly immersive and luxurious Japanese experience.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some guests have noted minor points for improvement:

  • Design Finish Details: A few guests have observed "unmatched wood panelling on the exterior, rotting wood, and rusting iron around the onsen" as design finish details that "irked" them, especially considering the steep price.
  • Minor Room Inconveniences: Some specific room critiques include awkwardly placed light switches, hidden and awkward-to-access mini-bar and coffee/tea facilities, and the orientation of luxurious chaise lounges towards the TV rather than the scenic views.
  • Lack of Communal Onsen Experience: For those accustomed to traditional ryokans with multiple communal indoor and outdoor bathing options, the focus on in-room private onsens at Zaborin might leave a sense of something missing.
  • Limited Lunch Options: The absence of lunch service at the ryokan can be inconvenient for guests staying multiple days, as dining options outside the property may not be easily accessible or align with the high standard of the ryokan's cuisine.
  • Proximity Noise: In at least one instance, the "illusion of seclusion" was slightly marred by the proximity of the motor court and occasional traffic sounds from the nearby road.
  • Bugs: Depending on the time of year, there have been mentions of bugs, though this is often acknowledged as an unavoidable aspect of a natural, forested location.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Zaborin for two nights and loved every single moment. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by an incredible team whose hospitality felt genuinely warm and thoughtful. We were personally introduced to the property and our room by Lei (I hope I’m spelling her name correctly). She was so kind, sweet, and attentive, the kind of service that makes you feel truly car...

I fear I will never experience anything this perfect ever again. The rooms alone are stunning along with every inch of the hotel. The private onsen, both indoor and outdoor, were life changing. I cant imagine why anyone would give ...

Amazing hotel, amazing staff. Will be back and that’s the only way to rate a place. I do wish the food was more like other traditional Japanese hotels that we’ve stayed at, larger presentations, more plentiful, just wasn’t what I was expecting based on past experiences at other traditional Japanese hotels. Not to say the food was bad at all, it’s excellent. I was just excepting something more “gra...

ZABORIN Zen Philosophy: It symbolizes letting go of worldly desires and achieving a state of "being" or stillness. If there is any chance that one would want to indulge in a luxury getaway, stay at Zaborin. Immaculate and unobtrusive service, immersive connection to nature, Michelin starred cuisine; all bundled with genuinely warm and welcoming ryokan hospitality. The ryokan succeeds in its ob...

Stunning, isolated, fantastic amenities, and impeccable service. Delicious food as well. A definite highlight are the in room onsens. A great place to relax and unwind, but also quite accessible for skiing, with a locker room and only 5 minute drive from Hanazono. A car is reccomended for access though, a compromise in exchange for the quiet setting.

We stayed two nights in the Shiyuki Suite in late October. Zaborin has a beautiful modern Japanese aesthetic — peaceful, minimalist, and thoughtfully designed. The property is spotless and well maintained, and the bed and linens were incredibly comfortable. Upon our request, they adjusted the temperature for both the indoor and outdoor onsen. Dinner takes about two hours, and while each course w...
