Expert Review: The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa, Autograph Collection

The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa, Autograph Collection, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property in Denver, Colorado, stands as a historic landmark revered for its timeless elegance and exceptional service.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa generally garners positive feedback, with an average overall rating of 4.0 out of 5 stars on Marriott Bonvoy and Expedia and 8.3 out of 10 on Agoda. Guests frequently praise its exceptional service and luxurious amenities, often highlighting the hotel's rich history, iconic architecture, and captivating ambiance. However, some recent guest experiences, particularly noted on platforms like Reddit, reflect a mixed sentiment, with criticisms regarding perceived overpricing, maintenance issues, and occasional service lapses, suggesting a potential decline in "modern service standards" for some.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of The Brown Palace:

  • Service: The staff is often described as consistently outstanding, helpful, attentive, and striking a balance between formal and friendly hospitality.
  • Location: Its prime location in the heart of downtown Denver, specifically in the Financial District, offers easy access to major attractions, shopping districts, and dining options.
  • Design: The hotel's historic charm, grandeur, and opulent Renaissance Revival architecture, including its awe-inspiring eight-floor atrium lobby with velvet red galleries and wrought-iron railings, are frequently celebrated. The design seamlessly blends historic character with refined comfort and modern elements.
  • Amenities: Key amenities include a full-service spa and salon, a fitness center, valet parking, comprehensive room service, multiple restaurants and bars, and the celebrated Afternoon Tea. The presence of pure artesian water from its own well and complimentary Wi-Fi in the lobby are also noted. Live jazz music in the lobby further enhances the sophisticated atmosphere. The hotel is also pet-friendly.

3. Room Quality

The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa offers 241 to 243 sophisticated rooms and suites, designed for comfort and luxury with air conditioning. Rooms feature hand-crafted details, luxurious bedding, plush robes, flat-screen HDTVs, iPod docking stations, personal Keurig coffee makers, and in-room safes. Bathrooms are elegantly appointed, with some featuring rain showerheads, double marble sinks, and oversized soaking tubs in select suites. Designer toiletries are also provided.

However, as is common with many historic grand hotels, some standard rooms can be "smallish," paneled in walnut, vaguely Art Deco, and may feature smaller bathtubs and low desks. More concerningly, recent guest feedback has highlighted issues such as room disrepair, including curling wallpaper, leaking toilets, broken draperies, poor furniture condition, and malfunctioning HVAC systems. Some guests have also reported a lack of basic amenities like soap or body wash and long waits for hot water in the shower.

4. Dining Experience

The Brown Palace boasts a diverse culinary scene with four restaurants and three bars/lounges.

  • Palace Arms: A unique, historically decorated dining experience featuring Napoleonic artifacts, it's known for its tableside Caesar salad and a menu that blends classic dishes with seasonal, local ingredients. The restaurant was undergoing a complete renovation as of June 2023.
  • Afternoon Tea: Held in the Atrium Lounge, it's a cherished Denver tradition, offering fine teas, finger sandwiches, scones, and petit fours, accompanied by live piano music. Reservations for this popular experience are highly recommended and often soar.
  • Ellyngton's: A destination for thoughtfully prepared breakfasts and a distinguished weekend brunch, complete with live jazz. While many appreciate the breakfast quality and attentive service, some recent reports indicated "abysmal" brunch reviews and uncertainty around holiday offerings.
  • Ship Tavern: Operating since 1934, it's known for hearty fare, including prime rib, oysters, a raw bar, and weekend piano cabaret. However, some guests have expressed concerns about cleanliness in this establishment.
  • Churchill's Bar: A classic cigar bar, though smoke has been noted to occasionally waft into the adjacent dining areas. Room service is available for guests who prefer to dine in the comfort of their rooms. Vegan and vegetarian options are also offered, including a special breakfast.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at The Brown Palace is frequently lauded for its professionalism, attentiveness, and genuine hospitality. Many guests report excellent and friendly interactions, highlighting the staff's ability to be formal without being stuffy. From front desk to housekeeping and restaurant servers, staff members are often praised for making guests feel valued. Multilingual staff are also available. Despite the generally positive sentiment, some recent feedback has included complaints about rude and dismissive bar staff.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa boasts a prime downtown Denver location in the Financial District, placing guests within easy reach of numerous attractions. It's just a short walk from the 16th Street Mall, the Denver Art Museum, the Colorado Convention Center, and Coors Field. Public transportation, including bus stops and light rail stations (18th - California and 20th - Welton), are within a 2-6 minute walk. Denver Union Station is also easily accessible, being a 7-minute cab ride, a 15-minute free MallRide, or a 20-minute walk away. For those arriving by air, Denver International Airport (DEN) is approximately 22 miles away, with driving times ranging from 25 to 40 minutes. The hotel offers both valet parking and an onsite car park. Additionally, shuttle services are available to popular destinations like the ski mountains (Vail, Beaver Creek) and Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

7. Value & Pricing

The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa is considered a luxury property, reflected in its pricing. The average room rate has been around $393 per room, notably higher than the city's average of $214. Recent average room rates were reported at $286.12 USD, compared to the city's average of $137.43 USD. Standard rooms typically range from $176 to $274, while suites can range from $309 to $1,600. Guest perceptions of "value for money" are mixed, with ratings ranging from 3.7 to 7.5 out of 10. Some guests feel the hotel is overpriced, especially for certain events or given perceived service and upkeep issues. A common complaint regarding pricing is the high cost of parking, with valet parking often cited as being expensive, for example, $52 for one night.

8. Common Complaints

While renowned for its history and grandeur, several recurring criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Room Condition: Issues include general disrepair, such as curling wallpaper, leaking toilets, broken draperies, worn furniture, and malfunctioning HVAC systems. Some guests have also reported a lack of basic amenities like soap or body wash and slow hot water.
  • Service Inconsistencies: Although often praised, some guests have encountered rude or dismissive bar staff.
  • Cleanliness: Specific concerns have been raised regarding cleanliness, particularly within the Ship Tavern.
  • Value Perception: A sentiment of being "overpriced" is sometimes expressed, especially concerning special events like the Champagne Cascade and Holiday Tea, which some guests felt were expensive and crowded without offering commensurate value.
  • Parking Costs: The high cost of valet parking is a frequent point of contention.
  • Noise: One guest reported being woken up early by loud preparations for an event.
  • Website Issues: Some users have experienced difficulties with the hotel's booking website, encountering "access denied" messages.

I greatly enjoyed my stay here with friends. I got upgraded to a large room on the top floor, and it felt old fashioned and like stepping back in time. Really a cool experience. A welcome drink was offered upon arrival, which I had never experienced at any hotel. This is an incredibly cozy place, perfect for a couples getaway.

We booked this room for our wedding night with the assumption the Brown Palace was a high end hotel experience. We were really surprised to find this severely low quality to be the standard at The Brown Palace. The front desk person nearly rolled their eyes when I said we had just gotten married that evening and were staying for our wedding night. The room's bathroom has either mold or dirt on all...

We went here for my friends birthday. To be honest I was expecting better service. For the price, I thought we wouldn’t have to wait 10+ minutes for a water refill. We had to ask the host to explain the process. Our server never really came back after we got our tea and plates. I had to chase her down for check, water refills and ask the host how afternoon tea works. Lovely tea, amazing food, stra...

We came for drinks, appetizers, and to enjoy the live piano. Unfortunately, the music was not played for most of the time we were there. The appetizers were disappointing, and both the appetizer and dessert menus were very limited. The drinks, however, were excellent. What really affected the experience was that vacuuming started around 6:20 while we were still seated, listening to the live piano,...

For a 4 star hotel it definitely gave 3 star vibes. The check in area only had 1 person at the desk and it took a while to check in. The hotel definitely gave deferential treatment to their event guests. Perhaps if they were staffed better it would have been more seamless. Also when we arrived there was no one at the entry to help with bags, and we had 3 large bags to bring in. The rooms were smal...

As a Denver resident of over a decade, I’ve always viewed The Brown Palace as the city’s crown jewel and an icon that managed to remain relevant as a modern city grew around it. My girlfriend and I decided to finally cross it off our list with a staycation, booking a premium package and dinner at Palace Arms. Unfortunately, after spending well over $1,000, I left feeling more deflated than pampere...
