Expert Review: The Allegro Royal Sonesta Hotel Chicago Loop
The Allegro Royal Sonesta Hotel Chicago Loop stands out as a Michelin Key Selected property, offering guests a blend of vintage Art Deco charm and modern comfort in the vibrant heart of Chicago.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Allegro Royal Sonesta Hotel Chicago Loop is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "Wonderful," "Very good," and "Exceptional." The hotel generally receives ratings around 8.1 to 8.4 out of 10 across various platforms. Travelers appreciate its boutique atmosphere and the seamless integration of historic elegance with contemporary amenities.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise several aspects of The Allegro Royal Sonesta. Its prime location in the Theater District is a standout feature. The hotel's Art Deco design and charming ambiance are frequently mentioned, with many appreciating the "relaxed, cool style" and restored grandeur. The friendly and accommodating staff also receives high marks. Amenities such as the well-equipped fitness center (including a Peloton bike), and unique touches like complimentary afternoon tea and scones in the lobby, are highly valued. The hotel is also noted as being pet-friendly, going above and beyond to accommodate furry companions with water bowls, bandanas, and treats.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at The Allegro Royal Sonesta are described as featuring refined decor, custom hardwood finishes, and fine furnishings, aiming for luxurious yet unostentatious comfort. Guests can expect amenities such as 37-inch or 43-inch flat-screen LCD TVs, mini-fridges, laptop-size safes, and quality Atelier Bloem bath products. While many find the beds "super comfy" and rooms "spacious and comfortable," some guests have noted that the rooms, and particularly the bathrooms, can be "small" or "tiny." Despite this, the rooms are generally reported to be clean and well-maintained. Coffee and tea makers are available upon request, though not standard in every room to maintain the aesthetic.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel offers dining options through Legato Lounge (formerly Bar Allegro), providing a chic setting for cocktails and dinner classics, and 312 Chicago, which serves fine Italian cuisine. Guests can enjoy a "highly-rated" cooked-to-order breakfast, available for a fee on weekdays and weekends, which some have described as "amazing." Additionally, the hotel provides complimentary coffee and tea service in the lobby each morning, alongside the much-loved afternoon tea and scones. However, some guests have noted that the restaurant might be closed on weekends, which can be an inconvenience.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at The Allegro Royal Sonesta consistently receive high praise. Guests frequently highlight their friendliness, helpfulness, and accommodating nature. Reviewers mention staff going "above and beyond," being "excellent," and paying "attention to small details," contributing significantly to a positive guest experience.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Allegro Royal Sonesta boasts an "unbeatable" and "excellent" location in the heart of the Chicago Loop and its vibrant Theater District. It is directly connected to the Cadillac Palace Theater, making it ideal for show-goers. The hotel is within easy walking distance of major attractions such as Millennium Park, Grant Park, the Chicago Riverwalk, and the luxury shopping along State Street and the Magnificent Mile. Its proximity to metro stations like Washington/Wells and Clark/Lake also ensures excellent accessibility to the rest of the city.
7. Value & Pricing
With an average price per room around $251, compared to the average Chicago hotel room price of $227, The Allegro Royal Sonesta Hotel Chicago Loop is often considered to offer "exceptional value for money" for its level of luxury and prime location. However, a daily destination fee of $32 is applied, which includes amenities like premium Wi-Fi, two bottles of water, fitness center access, and a $10 credit for Legato Lounge. While some guests feel this fee is not fully justified or should be included in the initial booking price, others find the overall experience worth the cost. Room rates on platforms like Kayak can start from around $103, but this can vary significantly.
8. Common Complaints
Despite the high praise, a few recurring issues are noted by guests. The most common complaint revolves around the size of the rooms and bathrooms, with several guests describing them as "small," "tiny," or "very small." The daily destination fee is another point of contention, with some guests feeling it adds an unexpected cost and doesn't always provide commensurate value. While coffee/tea makers are available, their absence as a standard in-room amenity has been a minor critique for some. Additionally, some guests have reported limited TV selections and occasional closures of the on-site restaurant on weekends.

Overall a great stay! Below is my honest review with pros and cons: Pros: Really great cleaning services every day, fantastic location, has afternoon tea hours from 2-4 with scones and tea, has great service from all employees, great lobby area and architecture, in the theater district and close by the water where you get lots of things to do Con: No close by laundromats, terrible wifi (couldn’t...

My husband and I stopped into Allegro Royal Sonesta Hotel Chicago for a quick drink, and from the very beginning of our visit, we were completely wowed. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful—stylish, inviting, and full of character—but what truly stood out was the service. From security, to the front desk, to the restaurant staff, every single person we interacted with was friendly, welcoming,...

Got the suite for my parents and I got a regular room. They were both beautiful, big, comfy and well decorated. Staff was extremely accommodating and nice. Valet service was great and quick. I highly recommend the lemon ricotta pancakes at the restaurant on the main floor. Highly recommend! Will definitely go back in the future.

I’m currently here now for the weekend to have a slight stay cation. So I booked through a 3rd party site. It doesn’t mention the $100 a night extra fee for incidentals. Which is charged up front but returned back. It doesn’t mention the $10 a night credit to spend at the hotel. It doesn’t mention that they have no room service and if you google room service for their hotel you come up with 2 p...

This was our first time staying downtown Chicago and it was a mom–daughter trip to see Phantom of the Opera—and the Alllegro Royal Sonesta made it absolutely unforgettable. Imagine our surprise when there was a knock at our door, and surprise, surprise! We were greeted with a complimentary bottle of wine and yummy platter! It was such a thoughtful and generous gesture and instantly made us feel w...

We stayed here because we were going to see Phantom of the opera right next-door. Super convenient to be able to just walk to our show. The rooms are clean. The beds are super comfortable in the room. Keys are the best! They also give you two postcards and there’s mail service throughout the hotel, which is a nice touch. Would definitely stay here again.
