Expert Review: Hotel EMC2, Autograph Collection
Hotel EMC2, Autograph Collection in Chicago, a Michelin Key Selected property, generally receives positive feedback for its distinctive style, prime location, and exceptional staff.
Overall Rating & Sentiment
The hotel enjoys a strong overall rating, often described as "Fabulous" or "Very Good," with an average score of 8.7 on Booking.com and positive sentiments across various review platforms. Guests frequently praise its unique blend of art and science, creating a memorable and engaging atmosphere.
Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight several standout features:
- Design & Atmosphere: The hotel's unique, artistic, and modern industrial design, with elegant Deco-inspired decor and brass accents, is a major draw. The "intersection of art and science" theme is well-appreciated.
- Location: Its excellent and central location in downtown Chicago, particularly near the Magnificent Mile, is a significant advantage.
- Service & Staff: The staff are frequently described as friendly, helpful, welcoming, and accommodating, contributing significantly to a positive guest experience.
- Unique Amenities: The "robot butlers," Leo and Cleo, which deliver items to rooms (excluding food), are a quirky and appreciated feature. Rooms also feature a unique brass horn that amplifies phone audio.
Room Quality
Hotel EMC2's rooms are noted for their modern decor, hardwood floors, and unique design elements. They are typically clean, spotless, and well-appointed, featuring a 49-inch flat-screen TV with premium cable, a coffee maker, a work desk, and a safety deposit box. Many guests find the beds very comfortable. However, some guests have noted that the rooms are not particularly large and often lack sufficient seating beyond the bed and a single, sometimes uncomfortable, office chair. Older reviews also mentioned a less-than-private bathroom layout in some rooms, though the toilet was separate.
Dining Experience
The on-site restaurant, The Albert, is a popular dining spot, offering seasonal cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as weekend brunch. Breakfast, if included, typically features a standard spread of eggs, bacon, oatmeal, yogurt, fruit, and coffee. While generally good, some find the food "not especially memorable" and one guest reported loud music playing during breakfast, detracting from the atmosphere. The bar area also receives positive remarks for its vibe.
Service & Staff
The hotel's staff is consistently praised as one of its strongest assets. Reviews frequently highlight their friendliness, helpfulness, and welcoming demeanor, with many guests describing the service as "exceptional" and a "stand out." From check-in to check-out, interactions are largely positive and effortless.
Location & Accessibility
Hotel EMC2 boasts an excellent and central location in Chicago's Streeterville district. It is conveniently situated less than two blocks from the famous Magnificent Mile, offering easy walking access to abundant shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Key attractions like the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower, Navy Pier, 360 CHICAGO, and Millennium Park are all within a short walk. The hotel is about a 35-minute drive from both O'Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW) airports and is less than half a mile from a CTA Red Line station.
Value & Pricing
While specific pricing can vary, the hotel has been noted to offer good value, with rooms sometimes available from around $130-$200 per night. Marriott's internal guest reviews give it a "Value for Money" rating of 4.3 out of 5, suggesting guests generally feel it's worth the cost. However, parking can be an additional significant expense.
Common Complaints
Despite generally high praise, some recurring issues have been noted by guests:
- Cleanliness: Occasional reports of cleanliness issues in some areas, including rooms and elevators, and instances of stained sheets or robes upon arrival.
- Room Seating: The lack of ample seating in rooms, often limited to a single desk chair, can be inconvenient for more than one guest.
- Parking: There is no on-site parking, with valet parking being expensive ($65 per night) and reliance on nearby garages sometimes posing accessibility challenges.
- Maintenance Issues: Some guests have reported issues with air conditioning not cooling effectively or shower handles being loose, leading to difficulty regulating water temperature.
- Room Lighting: Specific lighting fixtures, such as those attached to the phone amplifier, have been reported as non-functional, impacting overall room illumination.

I stayed here for my birthday and had a wonderful experience overall — definitely a 9/10 stay! The room itself was really nice, and my favorite touches were the beautiful shower and the vintage jazz audio saxophone player (such a unique and fun detail that made the stay feel extra special). The staff truly made the visit memorable. Jackie surprised me with a complimentary pair of plush slippers a...

Jackie was so amazing from before I even got to the hotel. I called to see if I could check in early and she was so friendly and helpful! The location is nice. It’s basically off of Michigan Ave so you’re walking distance to everything, but kind of ducked off as well so when you walk out, you’re not immediately in the hustle and bustle. Once I made it to my room, I was so thrilled!! I didn’t want ...

I stayed here for our annual conference and had a great experience from start to finish. The room was extremely clean, the bed was comfortable, and I felt very safe during my stay. I loved the convenience of being able to control the lights and room features from my phone, as well as the wall controls by the bed. I was also pleasantly surprised with an upgrade to a king room, which was a nice touc...

This was one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever stayed at. The art was fantastic. The layout was gorgeous. Bed was comfy. Only issue I would say is the bathroom door was a little hard to close, but once you got used to it, it wasn't so bad. Night-time service and the food from it was great and yummy! 100% recommend and will be coming back again!!!!

We love Autograph hotels and stay at them when we can as they provide a unique experience with beautiful views and rooms. This one fell short compared to past ones we have stayed at in Chicago. The rooms are super cool and unique with the beautiful shower in the middle with all glass. The theme, decorations and electronics throughout the hotel are high tech and unique which provides that unique ex...

Wow!! What an incredible stay! I’ve wanted to stay here for about 2 years and finally made my way to the city for a spectacular New Year’s Eve trip! From the moment we walked in Nia, and Laura were amazing they truly provided the best customer service. I’ve never experienced anything like this, warm, friendly, and you can tell they value each guest. When we would return from walking and shopping t...
