Expert Review: Soho House Chicago

Soho House Chicago, a Michelin Key Selected property, stands as a distinctive luxury hotel and members' club in the vibrant Fulton Market District, offering a unique blend of industrial heritage and contemporary luxury. It is frequently lauded as a "home away from home" for its guests, particularly those in creative fields.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall sentiment for Soho House Chicago is largely positive, reflected in its selection by the Michelin Guide and high guest review scores, such as 19.6 out of 20 on Tablet Hotels. Guests appreciate its exclusive atmosphere and extensive amenities. However, some recent discussions, particularly among members, reveal mixed feelings regarding the evolving value of membership and service consistency.

2. Key Highlights

Soho House Chicago is celebrated for several key aspects:

  • Design & Ambiance: Housed in a beautifully renovated 1908 belt factory, the hotel masterfully blends rough industrial elements, like exposed brick, with refined luxurious touches, including plush leather furnishings, opulent chandeliers, and over 250 pieces of curated art. The "home away from home" aesthetic is eclectic and thoughtfully designed.
  • Amenities: A standout feature is the 80-foot rooftop pool and bar, offering spectacular city skyline views. The hotel also boasts a comprehensive wellness offering, including a 17,000-square-foot gym with a professional boxing ring, fitness studios, and the Cowshed spa, which provides a range of treatments and its own product line. A plush 30-seat screening room and various club lounges contribute to the exclusive experience.
  • Membership Perks: Hotel guests receive full access to all member amenities, including restaurants, the gym, spa, screening room, and rooftop pool for the duration of their stay.

3. Room Quality

Soho House Chicago offers 40 bedrooms across five categories: "Tiny" (200 sq ft), "Small" (300 sq ft), "Medium" (500 sq ft), "Medium Plus" (550 sq ft), and "Big" (600 sq ft).

  • Comfort & Design: Rooms are designed for comfort and luxury, featuring king-sized beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, and large industrial-style windows that nod to the building's history. The decor is eclectic, ranging from a moody 1960s feel in "Tiny" rooms to turn-of-the-century velvet and veneer in "Medium" and "Big" rooms.
  • Amenities: All rooms include rainforest showers and Cowshed toiletries, along with ghd hairstyling tools, a flatscreen TV, Roberts radio, Marshall Bluetooth speaker, minibar, and a cocktail station. Larger rooms, such as "Medium Plus" and "Big," offer additional luxuries like sitting areas, dining tables for two, and freestanding claw-foot bathtubs.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel offers a diverse and appealing dining scene with several on-site restaurants and bars.

  • Rooftop Restaurant (Cecconi's Roof Bar): Open to members and guests, this popular spot provides stunning city views and serves modern Italian dishes, including wood-fired pizzas, salads, small plates (cicchetti), and oven-roasted mains like sea bass. It's also known for weekend brunch. The ceviche and house burger have received high praise.
  • House Kitchen: Located in a cozy indoor dining room on the club floor, it offers an all-day menu with Chicago-Italian and deli-style comfort food, such as dirty burgers, Caesar salad, and mac 'n' cheese.
  • The Allis Bar: Situated on the main floor and open to both members and the public, The Allis offers a European-inspired menu, classic cocktails, and a highly-rated afternoon tea service on weekends.
  • Other options: Chicken Shop and Pizza East are also on the first floor and accessible to the public.
  • Food Quality & Sentiment: While many guests commend the "good" quality of food and drinks, with specific items like ceviche rated exceptionally high, some members have found the offerings to be "bland and overpriced."

5. Service & Staff

Feedback on service and staff at Soho House Chicago is somewhat varied. Some guests highlight "dedicated service" and friendly staff. However, recurring complaints point to inconsistencies, with some experiencing "frustratingly slow" and "inattentive" service, particularly concerning tab management and drinks being pushed by servers. High staff turnover has also been noted as a potential factor in service issues.

6. Location & Accessibility

Soho House Chicago is strategically located in the Fulton Market District of the West Loop, an area that has undergone significant revitalization from its industrial past into a popular destination for luxury apartments, gastronomic restaurants, and vibrant bars.

  • Attractions: Guests are steps away from a multitude of dining and entertainment options within the thriving neighborhood.
  • Transportation: The hotel is a convenient 15-minute walk from the Ogilvie Transportation Center and approximately 1 km from the UIC-Halsted L station, which is served by the Pink and Green lines. Valet parking is also available.

7. Value & Pricing

Rates for rooms at Soho House Chicago typically range from approximately $300 to $686+ per night, depending on the room type and booking. As a members' club, a significant aspect of its value proposition is the access to exclusive amenities. While non-members can book rooms and enjoy member privileges during their stay, there's also an option to purchase a "Soho Friends" membership for $130 annually, which offers reduced room rates and other benefits at Soho House properties globally. The perception of value is mixed. For those who frequently utilize the gym, spa, pool, and social spaces, especially individuals in creative industries who appreciate the club's ethos, the cost can be justified. However, some members and guests have expressed that the food and drinks are "overpriced," leading to questions about the overall value, particularly given reported service issues and changes to co-working policies.

8. Common Complaints

Several recurring issues and criticisms have been noted by guests and members:

  • Service Inconsistencies: Frequent complaints about slow and inattentive service, issues with the "House Pay" system, and difficulty closing tabs.
  • Laptop/Co-working Restrictions: The hotel has reportedly limited "laptop hours" and removed many desk-like tables, diminishing its appeal as a co-working space for some members.
  • Overpriced Food & Drink: While some praise the dining, others find the food and beverage options to be "bland and overpriced."
  • Crowding at the Pool: Securing a spot at the popular rooftop pool can be challenging, especially during peak seasons.
  • Event Programming: Some members have found the events list to be "light" or repetitive, focusing heavily on DJs, tarot readings, and inspiration summits.
  • Vibe Perception: A few guests have described the atmosphere as "pretentious" or overtly focused on trying to be "cool."

This was my 3rd stay at the Chicago SoHo house and the best one yet. May greeted us and was always there when we had a question. Peter at the lobby restaurant was an exceptional server. Our large room was truly spectacular with views of the Willis Tower. SoHo house knows how to make travel feel luxurious and welcoming!

As a new member of Soho, I’m so enamoured at how beautiful every floor is. The gym is INCREDIBLE. The members lounge and Sunday brunch feast is a vibe. I could hang out for hours and hours by the real wood burning fire in the perfectly curated spaces. Thank you Soho Chicago for the best birthday weekend I could ask for.

I attended afternoon tea at Soho House for a birthday with a group of 15 people and unfortunately wouldn’t recommend it. We paid $84 per person and stayed about 2–3 hours, but the value didn’t match the price at all. Each person received a small pot of tea, 2 tiny sandwiches, one macaron, a small slice of pie, and a few very small finger foods. The food quality was disappointing — the macaron was...

Cool spot. Had a relaxing lobby, classy restaurant and a vibey bar/club area that stays open late. Rooftop heated pool and movie theater is sick. Bartender had some great recommendations to continue the night. The phone charger in the lobby area was a life saver.

We stayed with Soho House Sept. 12-14 for our wedding across the street, and we are SO happy that we did! From initial check-in, the Soho team made us feel so welcome, even gifting us a bottle of champagne and sweets upon arrival! The "Big" room was absolutely GORGEOUS, and accommodating my bridal party for wedding glam was a breeze. From room service, to the assortment of bath and personal produ...
