The Chicago Athletic Association, a distinguished Michelin One-Key property, offers a unique blend of historic grandeur and modern amenities in the heart of downtown Chicago. This hotel, housed in a meticulously restored 1893 Venetian Gothic landmark, is generally well-regarded by guests for its exceptional design, prime location, and diverse dining and entertainment options.
Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for the Chicago Athletic Association is largely positive, with guests frequently praising its "thoughtful, elegant spaces," "excellent service," and "well-curated food and drink." It's described as a "hip, buzzing hotel" that thoughtfully incorporates its past as an elite men's athletic club. Many consider it perfect for solo travelers, couples, or groups seeking a historically rich and vibrant experience in the city. The hotel maintains an impressive guest score of 18.8 out of 20 from verified Michelin Guide guests, with public spaces scoring particularly high at 19.2.
Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight several standout features:
- Location: The hotel boasts an "excellent Chicago location" directly across from Millennium Park, offering easy access to major attractions.
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel's historic architecture and meticulously preserved Victorian Gothic features, including marble staircases and paneled drawing rooms with fireplaces, are a major draw. The interior design, by Roman and Williams, creates a "traditionally masculine aesthetic" with touches like tufted leather couches, dark wood, and even unique leather pommel horses in rooms. Its lobby has been affectionately described as "Harry-Potter-esque" gothic.
- Dining & Bars: The property is renowned for its diverse and popular dining and bar scene, which is often bustling with both hotel guests and locals.
- Unique Amenities: Notable amenities include Cindy's, a rooftop restaurant and bar with sweeping views of Millennium Park and Lake Michigan, the Game Room offering billiards and bocce, and the speakeasy-style Milk Room. A unique perk is the world's only Shake Shack offering room service. The hotel also features a 24-hour fitness center, free bike rentals, and a TopGolf Swing Suite.
Room Quality
Rooms at the Chicago Athletic Association are designed with a nod to the building's athletic history, featuring dark carpeting, metal bed frames with brass accents, wood furniture, and often a distinctive leather pommel horse at the foot of the bed. Guests appreciate the comfortable Sealy mattresses, Sferra linens, Fairbault Woolen Mill Blankets, and modern conveniences like bedside USB charging ports and Bluetooth speakers. Bathrooms evoke an "old-school locker-room feel" with Carrara marble, rain showers, C.O. Bigelow toiletries, and vintage boxing-style robes. While some rooms offer stellar vistas of Millennium Park, standard rooms can sometimes be on the smaller side with limited views and natural light. Some guests have noted minor wear and tear on furnishings like nightstands and bathroom doors.
Dining Experience
The hotel offers an impressive array of culinary experiences:
- Cindy's: Located on the 13th floor, this rooftop restaurant and bar provides breathtaking views of Millennium Park and Lake Michigan. It's a hotspot for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunches, serving seasonal dishes and alcoholic punches. Reservations are highly recommended.
- Cherry Circle Room: A James Beard Award-winning dining room for its interiors, the Cherry Circle Room offers elevated regional cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with an extensive cocktail and seafood menu.
- Game Room: This lively spot features pub-style fare, cocktails, and classic games like billiards, bocce, and shuffleboard, making it a popular social hub.
- Milk Room: A former Prohibition-era speakeasy, this intimate eight-seat microbar specializes in rare vintage spirits and curated whiskies, offering a unique historical drinking experience. It also serves breakfast and coffee on Sunday mornings.
- Shake Shack: Conveniently located within the hotel, this outpost offers its popular burgers and shakes, notably as the world's only Shake Shack available for room service.
- Drawing Room: A cozy, wood-carved space with leather couches and fireplaces, perfect for afternoon and evening drinks and light bites.
- Fairgrounds: A coffee shop in the lobby provides a range of coffee drinks, teas, pastries, and snacks, with a discount available for guests.
Service & Staff
The service at Chicago Athletic Association is frequently lauded as "excellent" and "impeccable," with staff members generally described as amiable and helpful. The front desk is always staffed, facilitating easy check-outs even at early hours. However, some guests have reported isolated instances of less-than-ideal experiences, such as check-in staff appearing "weird" or "off-putting."
Location & Accessibility
Strategically located on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago's Loop district, the hotel is across from Millennium Park, placing guests within easy walking distance of iconic attractions such as Cloud Gate, Crown Fountain, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Chicago Cultural Center.
Public transportation is highly accessible, with several "L" train stations (Madison-Wabash, Adams-Wabash, Washington/Wabash) and bus stops just steps or a short walk away. Traveling from O'Hare International Airport is convenient via the Blue Line to the Washington stop, followed by a 5-10 minute walk. From Midway International Airport, the Orange Line to Washington/Wabash is recommended. The hotel is committed to accessibility, offering accessible guest rooms with features like roll-in showers and wider doorways, and ensuring public spaces and restaurants are accessible with Braille signage.
Value & Pricing
While offering a luxury experience, the Chicago Athletic Association can be a significant investment. Cash rates have been observed to exceed $500 per night, though deals can be found, with Kayak showing prices ranging from $138 to $339 in recent weeks. A daily "Founders Fee" (resort fee) of $29.81 (subject to change) is applied, which covers amenities such as Wi-Fi, 24-hour fitness center access, free coffee/tea, a welcome Champagne toast, bike rentals, skip-the-line access to Cindy's, and a TopGolf bay. However, some guests have reported that this fee and its inclusions are not always clearly communicated during check-in. Valet parking is available at a rate of $84 per night, which is considered pricey.
Common Complaints
Despite its many strengths, some recurring criticisms include:
- Noise: Rooms facing the alley can experience significant noise from garbage and delivery trucks, particularly in the early morning hours. Even park-view rooms, while offering better light, can be subject to city noise. Thin walls have also been cited as a concern.
- Room Size and Light: Some standard rooms are noted as being small, dark, and lacking sufficient storage or natural light.
- Lack of Pool/Spa: The hotel does not feature a swimming pool or a dedicated spa on-site, which may be a drawback for some guests seeking those amenities. In-room spa services can be arranged.
- Crowded Public Spaces: The lobby and popular dining areas can become very busy with both hotel guests and non-guests, making it challenging to find quiet spots or receive prompt service.
- Maintenance: Some minor wear and tear on lobby furniture and rugs, as well as uneven water pressure in showers, have been mentioned.
- Hidden Fees/Communication: The "Founders Fee" (resort fee) is occasionally not explicitly mentioned during check-in, leading to some guest confusion.

Cons: The room was hot and the A/C did nothing at all to cool the room. We had to keep the windows open the entire time which did allow us to hear the symphony of never ending sirens and every flight loudly depending from O’Hare. The bathroom is essentially a wet room since there is no way to keep from flooding the bathroom floor because there is a glass wall that only covers about 25% of the show...

Incredible experience. Beautiful and timeless hotel. Food in the lobby restaurant was great. The corner rooms are so spacious and have so much light. We appreciated the dog friendliness of the hotel and staff. It’s officially our favorite hotel in the city. Parking was great in north grant ave garage.

I didn't feel comfortable on the bar the chair was moving like it was going to break, the service could be better, but they were o...

I was a guest at Chicago Athletic Association Jan 10 through the 12th, 2026. The service from front desk to food service and housekeeping was absolutely excellent. Though the room was small, it was immaculately clean. If old-world architectural features and details are meaningful to you, this hotel is a masterpiece in its own right. Make sure you take the tour with "Jean", and "Zena" is an expe...

We hosted our February 2025 wedding at Chicago Athletic Association and were very happy with our experience. First and foremost, the venue itself is striking. We wanted a venue with complex, historical detail and CAA delivers. The hotel under went an extensive historical restoration in 2015 and the preservation of architectural details is striking. A few offerings that made Chicago Athletic Associ...

I'm writing this review while lying awake in my room, listening to the windows rattle from the bass of a wedding reception below us. We chose to upgrade our room at the Chicago Athletic Association, assuming it would offer a more elevated experience. Unfortunately, we weren't aware that the upgrade placed us 2 floors above the ballroom. Had we known, we would have made o different choice. The musi...
