Expert Review: Populus

Populus, Denver, a recent addition to the city's hospitality scene, has quickly garnered attention, earning a prestigious Michelin One-Key rating shortly after its October 2024 opening. This distinction recognizes hotels for excellent design, service, and overall character. The hotel's unique design, inspired by Colorado's native aspen trees and its commitment to sustainability as the country's first carbon-positive hotel, are central to its identity and guest experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Populus is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "exceptional" and "stunning". Review scores on platforms like Booking.com show high marks across the board, including location (9.3), cleanliness (9.3), comfort (9.2), and staff (9.4), though value for money is slightly lower at 8.5. Many appreciate the hotel's unique aesthetic and eco-conscious approach. However, some recurring criticisms exist regarding room size and initial dining experiences.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently love the hotel's striking and unique design, which seamlessly integrates nature and sustainability. The "aspen tree" inspiration is evident from the exterior's distinctive façade to the interior's natural materials, local art, and even birdsong played in the elevators. The central downtown location is another major draw, placing guests within walking distance of key attractions. The exceptional staff and delicious dining options are also frequently highlighted. The hotel's carbon-positive initiatives, including planting a tree for every guest night, resonate strongly with eco-conscious travelers.

3. Room Quality

Populus offers 265 guest rooms and 65 suites, designed with an earth-centric theme that transitions from dim hallways (mimicking a tree trunk) to light-bathed rooms ("sun-soaked branches"). The interior design features soft greens and terracotta hues, complemented by copper, leather, and natural wood finishes. Rooms are described as stylish, comfortable, and impeccably clean, offering amenities like minibars, flat-screen TVs, free WiFi, and quality skincare products. Many rooms feature signature "aspen-eye" windows that provide unique views of the city or mountains, with some even including cozy window hammocks. While the design is highly praised, some guests have found the rooms, particularly the "Grove Queen" and "Hammock Queen" types, to be on the smaller side (around 170 sq ft).

4. Dining Experience

Populus features three distinct dining venues: Pasque, Stellar Jay, and Little Owl Coffee. Pasque, located on the ground floor, offers all-day, nature-inspired American cuisine with a modern and romantic ambiance, and is praised for its delicious food and excellent breakfast options like avocado toast and blue-corn pancakes. Stellar Jay, the lively rooftop bar and restaurant, focuses on live-fire cooking and provides impressive views of the city and Rocky Mountains. Guests have enjoyed the inventive cocktail list and dishes like bison and venison skewers. Little Owl Coffee serves coffee and grab-and-go pastries in the lobby. While many guests have lauded the dining options, early reviews for Stellar Jay noted some under-seasoned dishes and service kinks during its initial opening.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Populus consistently receives high praise, with guests frequently describing the staff as "exceptional," "kind," "helpful," and going "above and beyond". Many reviews highlight a "Disney level customer service" experience, from valet parking and the front desk to housekeeping and restaurant staff. The multilingual staff further enhances the welcoming atmosphere.

6. Location & Accessibility

Situated in the heart of downtown Denver at 240 14th St, Populus boasts a fantastic and central location. It's just a 5-minute walk from 16th Street and the Denver Art Museum, and a 7-minute walk to the Colorado Convention Center. Other nearby attractions include Civic Center Park, the Paramount Theater, the Capital Building, and Larimer Square. The hotel is also described as being conducive to car-free travel, with proximity to the 16th Street Mall free shuttle and the Civic Center Transit Center. Valet parking is available for guests who drive. While generally excellent, one review noted that the downtown area can feel a "little empty" on Friday/Saturday nights.

7. Value & Pricing

Populus is generally considered a luxury hotel with rates starting around $149-$299 per night, with the most expensive rooms reaching $359. While guests appreciate the high quality and unique experience, some reviews suggest that the hotel can be expensive. The value for money score is rated at 8.5 on Booking.com, indicating a generally positive but not universally exceptional sentiment regarding its pricing. A daily guest amenities fee is applicable, which includes access to a daytime guest lounge, tickets to the Clyfford Still Museum, water refill stations, an in-room tea program, steeped coffee, and a credit for Pasque.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring criticisms have been noted. The most frequent complaint centers around the room size, with some guests finding them "tiny" or "a little small". There have also been early mentions of dim lighting in the rooms and issues with bathroom doors not staying open. Regarding dining, initial reviews for the rooftop restaurant, Stellar Jay, reported under-seasoned dishes and slower service, though it's acknowledged that new restaurants often have kinks to work out. Some guests have also pointed out the use of "scratchy thin toilet paper" and a perceived lack of luxury amenities, despite the luxury price point, attributing this to the hotel's eco-friendly angle. Lastly, the hotel's striking exterior design has sometimes been likened to a "cheese grater" or "creepy eyeballs" by those who find its unconventional look unsettling.

Location of the hotel is great, it's near downtown and there's definitely room for it to be even greater for the amount of upgrades hopefully the city will be able to pull off. Aside from that, the amenities, staff, and offerings of the hotel are so limited. It's definitely a beautiful architectural building with many cool interior designs and features, but wow it just ends there. I stayed for a...

My room was super small, I understand there are larger rooms. For business it was tough as there is no desk in room. My only other issue was lighting at sink vanity was not good for a girl to put makeup on in morning. Otherwise the room is great, wonderful linens, comfortable bed and climate control. The pitcher and glasses for water from water station were useful. Loved the cat hammock window to ...

Dear Traveler, I almost want to keep Populus Hotel to myself and tell you it wasn’t nearly as amazing as my family and I experienced it to be—but that wouldn’t be fair. ;) It was so special that my five-year-old asked if we could stay at least two more days. From the very beginning—booking our stay, calling the front desk to check on the weather before arrival, being warmly greeted by the team o...

I loved staying at this hotel for my recovery. Everyone there was so kind and assisted me however they could. I'd highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a unique and luxurious stay in the city! I used a business platinum card and was able to get $100 hotel credit for expenses which I happily used at the restaurant Pasque. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this lovely hotel and hope to vi...
