Expert Review: Naumi Studio Wellington

Naumi Studio Wellington, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently receives high praise for its distinctive design, prime location, and exceptional service, making it a standout choice for travelers seeking a vibrant and stylish stay in New Zealand's capital.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Naumi Studio Wellington enjoys a generally very positive sentiment, frequently described as "beautiful," "quirky," "artsy," and "funky". With a "very good" rating of 8.1 out of 10 from over 4,400 reviews on Booking.com, guests appreciate its unique character and bold approach to hospitality. The hotel's selection for the Michelin Guide further underscores its quality and distinctive appeal.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the hotel's striking and idiosyncratic design, which is a blend of eclectic patterns, shapes, and vibrant colors, drawing inspiration from its Edwardian heritage and the bohemian culture of Cuba Street. The central location on Cuba Street is a major highlight, placing guests amidst Wellington's best restaurants, shops, and attractions. The friendly and helpful staff, along with comfortable beds and a lively, welcoming atmosphere, are also frequently cited as reasons for a memorable stay.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Naumi Studio Wellington are well-appointed and comfortable, offering a unique aesthetic that complements the hotel's overall design. Each of the six room types features free high-speed Wi-Fi, Smart TVs with Netflix, tea and coffee making facilities, and a mini-fridge. Guests often praise the Egyptian-cotton bedding and excellent rain showers. While some rooms are described as compact, they are celebrated as "a work of art" with vibrant colors and hand-painted headboards. Double-glazed windows help mitigate street noise. However, some guests have noted that walls can be thin, leading to noise from adjoining rooms, and some rooms may get stuffy as they rely on ceiling fans rather than air conditioning.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's Lola Rouge restaurant and bar is a significant draw. It's known for serving modern Asian-fusion cuisine in a stylish setting and is also a popular spot for high tea. Guests have enjoyed the crafted cocktails and the overall dining experience. A buffet breakfast is available, featuring vegan, vegetarian, and locally sourced food options. The Parlour bar offers a speakeasy-style atmosphere or a sun-soaked sitting room for drinks and small plates.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Naumi Studio Wellington consistently receives excellent feedback. Guests describe the staff as "friendly," "very helpful," "knowledgeable," and "going the extra mile". Reviews highlight the staff's professionalism and welcoming demeanor, even during busy periods or unexpected situations like power outages.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts a superb and central location directly on Cuba Street, considered by many to be the best spot in Wellington. This puts guests within easy walking distance of a plethora of "funky cafes, lively bars, art galleries, restaurants and shopping areas". Major attractions such as Te Papa Museum, the Opera House, and the Wellington waterfront are also less than a mile away. Wellington Airport is a convenient 15-minute drive from the hotel.

7. Value & Pricing

Naumi Studio Wellington is often seen as offering "affordable luxe" and is considered "reasonably priced" for a centrally located Wellington hotel. While specific price ranges can vary, one example mentioned a price of NZ$145. Many guests feel it offers good value for money given its unique design, amenities, and prime location.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Noise: Due to the heritage nature of the building, some guests have experienced noise from adjoining rooms or from Cuba Street, with mentions of "paper-thin walls".
  • Room Temperature: A few reviews indicate that rooms can become hot and stuffy, as some rely on ceiling fans instead of air conditioning.
  • Parking: Limited and "tight" private parking is available for a surcharge.
  • Minibar: One recent review noted that the minibar was empty, contrasting with past experiences where it was complimentary.

I booked the executive suite for my 30th Birthday, it was as advertised in the photos, beautiful, quirky and large. Being on a busy street during O week, I was concerned of the noise, luckily noise was not an issue, even the general hotel sounds of the elevator and other guests where not present. They had a secure designated place for bags to be kept before check in. The only downside for me was t...

Avoid the place! Way too expensive for what you get. Extremely narrow, not fully cleaned rooms, outside windows are filthy, shower only half warm and cold. Design is nice but they should get the basics done first! Service was generally good (thanx, Olivia, for the great service and the smiles!).

Stylish stay in a great location Naumi Wellington is in a fantastic location and was an easy choice for a short stay. Check-in was smooth and friendly, and the hotel’s design is fun, modern, and full of character. The room was on the smaller side, but perfectly fine and comfortable for a one-night stay. Overall, a great option if you want something well-located with a bit of style

My stay was disappointing due to several basic amenities being unavailable. There was no drinking water bottle provided in the room, no toothbrush, and no hot water for showering in the morning. These are essential items and services that guests should be able to rely on. I hope the hotel addresses these issues to improve future guest experiences.

Amazing location along a street full of restaurants, ice cream, and loads of vintage shops. 15 minute walk to the harbour and close to many bus links. The staff were so helpful at the check in and let us leave our bags in the storage room after we checked out prior to heading to the airport. The pool is basic and unheated, but a pleasant temperature in November and much needed relaxation after an ...
