Expert Review: Mountain Meadows Lodge

Mountain Meadows Lodge in Killington, Vermont, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a "modern-rustic" retreat praised for its scenic lakeside setting and thoughtful amenities. Guests generally enjoy a comfortable and relaxing stay, appreciating the lodge's unique charm and array of activities.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall sentiment for Mountain Meadows Lodge is largely positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "wonderful" and "relaxing." On platforms like Booking.com, the lodge holds a "Wonderful" rating of 9.1 out of 10 based on numerous reviews. While some minor criticisms exist, the general consensus highlights a highly enjoyable experience, particularly for those seeking a tranquil and activity-rich mountain getaway.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of Mountain Meadows Lodge:

  • Location & Scenery: The lodge's picturesque setting on the banks of Kent Pond, surrounded by natural beauty, is a major draw, offering serene views and direct access to outdoor activities.
  • Design & Ambiance: The "modern-rustic" design, achieved by transforming an 180-year-old farmhouse and cow barn, creates a stylish and cozy atmosphere. Common areas, including lounges and a parlor with an antique bar, are beautifully designed.
  • Amenities: A wide range of amenities contributes significantly to guest satisfaction. These include a sauna and hot tub, a game room with billiards, darts, and table soccer, ski lockers with boot dryers, and nightly bonfires with s'mores. Coffee, tea, and cookies are often available in the lobby, adding to the welcoming feel.
  • Activities: On-site activities such as kayaking on the lake, access to board games, and nearby hiking trails are frequently mentioned as highlights.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations at Mountain Meadows Lodge are described as comfortable, modern, cozy, and spotlessly clean. Rooms typically feature mountain views, private bathrooms, and modern conveniences. Guests can expect pillowtop beds with premium bedding, air-conditioning, refrigerators, and flat-screen Smart TVs with premium cable channels. Bathrooms are equipped with rainfall showerheads, complimentary designer toiletries (such as William Roam amenities), and hair dryers. While generally praised for their beautiful decor and comfort, some guests have noted issues with noise due to thin walls and occasionally weak shower pressure or insufficient hot water.

4. Dining Experience

The lodge offers a "robust" and "delicious" country breakfast, served daily in the Kent Bistro. This meal is a highlight for many, featuring a wide variety of options including hot items like eggs, pancakes, or French toast, an oatmeal bar with various toppings, fresh fruit, house-made maple granola, and Vermont Dairy Farm yogurt, accompanied by fresh brewed Vermont Coffee Co. coffee. Guests can enjoy breakfast on the covered terrace, in the bar, or in the restaurant.

In the afternoons, the Kent Lounge and Bar, open daily from 3 PM, provides house-made seasonal soups, handcrafted cocktails, local brews, and a curated wine list. However, some guest feedback indicates that dinner and bar service may not always be consistently available, so checking in advance is advisable.

However, some guests have expressed dissatisfaction regarding staff friendliness and breakfast service, suggesting inconsistencies in service quality.

The lodge is a short walk from Gifford Woods State Park and steps away from the Appalachian Trail, making it ideal for nature enthusiasts.

For skiers, the location is highly convenient, being just five miles from Killington Mountain and a short drive (approximately 5-7 minutes) from Pico Mountain at Killington Ski Resort and the Killington K1 gondola. During winter, the lodge provides a scheduled shuttle service to the mountains, further enhancing accessibility for ski enthusiasts. The property is about 17 miles from Rutland State Airport.

Average prices tend to be around $319 for a weeknight and $459 for a weekend night, though rates can fluctuate seasonally, with February being the most expensive month and April the cheapest. Guests are also subject to a resort fee of $25 per accommodation, per night, which covers amenities such as internet access, self-parking, and hot tub access. Despite the additional fee, many guests rate the value for money highly, with an average score of 9.1 out of 10, suggesting that the experience generally justifies the cost.

We had an absolutely incredible stay at Mountain Meadows Lodge — truly a five-star experience from start to finish. The property itself is adorable and feels perfectly at home in the Green Mountains. It’s cute, quaint, and just far enough off the main road to give you that “real Vermont” feeling — peaceful, scenic, and cozy — while still being only a few short minutes from Killington for skiing. ...
