Expert Review: Yoshida Sanso
Yoshida Sanso, a Michelin Key Selected property in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, offers a deeply immersive and luxurious ryokan experience, lauded by guests for its historical elegance, serene ambiance, and impeccable service.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Yoshida Sanso consistently receives overwhelmingly positive reviews, with guests describing it as an exceptional, luxurious, and truly authentic Japanese experience. The sentiment is one of tranquility, refinement, and a unique opportunity to connect with Japan's cultural heritage. Many guests feel it's worth the high cost for the unparalleled experience it offers.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise Yoshida Sanso for several key aspects:
- Service: The hospitality is described as gracious, exceptional, welcoming, informative, and incredibly attentive. Personalized touches, such as handwritten calligraphic poems and sweets upon arrival, are frequently mentioned.
- Location: Situated at the tranquil foot of Mt. Yoshida in a residential neighborhood, the ryokan offers sweeping views of Kyoto while being a peaceful escape from the city's hustle. It's conveniently close to cultural attractions like Ginkaku-ji temple and the Philosopher's Walk.
- Design: Originally built in 1932 as an imperial family residence, the ryokan exudes historical grandeur and traditional Japanese (Shoin style) architecture. It features Japanese cypress, subtle Art Deco influences, stained glass windows, and flourishes of the Imperial Chrysanthemum Seal. The meticulously maintained gardens are a significant draw.
- Amenities: While traditional, the ryokan provides modern comforts including free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and a charming Café Shinkokan on-site. There are also massage facilities available.
3. Room Quality
Yoshida Sanso comprises a limited number of elegantly designed rooms (typically 3-5 in the main house, with names like 'Nanten,' 'Fuku,' and 'Kotobuki') and a detached suite, 'Hanare' or 'Satsuki Cottage annex'. Rooms are traditional Japanese style, featuring tatami mat flooring, comfortable futon bedding, sliding doors, and seasonal flower arrangements. They are described as quiet, spacious, and bright, with many offering serene views of the expertly tended garden or panoramic vistas of the Higashiyama mountains and Kyoto city. The detached 'Hanare' suite is built in the sukiya style using prized Kitayama cedar and includes a bedroom, a small kitchen, and a living room. In-room amenities typically include Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, yukata (Japanese robes), tabi-socks, and a selection of toiletries and tea sets.
4. Dining Experience
Dining at Yoshida Sanso is a culinary highlight, focusing on traditional Kyoto-style kaiseki dinners. These multi-course meals showcase the freshest seasonal delicacies, with dishes artfully plated to reflect the natural essence of their ingredients. Guests can expect exquisite and unique flavors. While breakfast is included with the stay and offers both Japanese and Western options, dinner is an optional extra that must be reserved in advance (typically 1 to 5 days) and incurs significant additional fees (ranging from JPY 25,000 to JPY 45,000 per person). Meals are served in private dining rooms, enhancing the intimate and exclusive atmosphere. The on-site Café Shinkokan, housed in the former imperial villa's garage, offers traditional refreshments and after-breakfast coffee with views of the surrounding mountains.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Yoshida Sanso is consistently highlighted as a major strength. Guests frequently commend the staff for their exceptional, gracious, and personalized hospitality. The proprietress (Okami) is known for her personal touch, welcoming guests with handwritten calligraphy and traditional sweets, and even offering private tours of the ryokan and its gardens, sharing its rich history. The staff are welcoming and informative, often going above and beyond, such as assisting with luggage storage and offering coffee in the tea house before departure. English-speaking staff are available to assist international travelers.
6. Location & Accessibility
Yoshida Sanso enjoys a serene location at the base of Mt. Yoshida in Kyoto's Sakyo ward, offering a peaceful retreat without being entirely isolated. It provides beautiful views of the Higashiyama mountains and Kyoto city. The ryokan is within walking distance of several significant cultural sites, including Ginkaku-ji Temple, Yoshida Shrine, and the scenic Philosopher's Walk. While not in the immediate city center, it is accessible, roughly a 20-minute taxi ride from Kyoto Station. Public bus stops are also nearby, though slightly over a kilometer away. The property can be reached by car, train, or bus from Kansai International Airport, with shuttle services potentially available upon request.
7. Value & Pricing
Yoshida Sanso is positioned as a luxury ryokan, with pricing reflecting its exclusivity, historical significance, and exceptional service. Accommodation costs typically range from ¥100,000 to ¥150,000 per person, or around JPY 156,000 per night for two persons. Dinner, if chosen, adds a substantial cost, starting from JPY 25,000 per person. While considered expensive compared to other ryokans in Kyoto, guests frequently assert that the unique cultural immersion, tranquil atmosphere, and impeccable hospitality make it a worthwhile and unforgettable experience.
8. Common Complaints
Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few points are occasionally mentioned:
- Limited Capacity & Restrictions: The ryokan has a very limited number of rooms (5 total), and typically requires two or more guests per room, with single travelers not accommodated. Children under 13 or 14 years old are generally not permitted.
- Fixed Meal Times & Advance Booking: Dinner requires advance reservations (1 to 5 days prior) and adherence to fixed meal times.
- Subtle Flavors: A few guests have noted that the delicate flavor profiles of some kaiseki dishes might be too subtle for those accustomed to stronger tastes.
- Potential for Noise: Due to the traditional construction, some guests have occasionally experienced minor noise disturbances from neighboring rooms due to thin walls.
- No Onsen: The ryokan does not feature a communal shared public bath or private onsen.

My husband and I are very picky travelers and we were nervous about staying at a ryokan instead of a familiar luxury brand hotel; but Yoshida Sanso surpassed our expectations. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and you feel transported back in time while you are here. Additionally, every day they served a traditional Japanese breakfast which was quite the experience. The service was impeccable a...

Our bus tour of Japan took us to the Yoshida Sansa for a ‘be my guest experience’ in a traditional ryokan and we had a beautiful, carefully made lunch in this beautiful hotel. The dining room was set up for us all when we arrived, in their gorgeous hundred year old building, overlooking their lovely Japanese garden. You must first remove your shoes when coming into the building (it is Japanese t...

We could not recommend this Ryokan highly enough. Convenient to Kyoto but feels like a world of its own. With beautiful mountainous background and peaceful gardens, this is one of the most blissful places we have ever stayed. The food was second to none; we were not expecting such high quality which also included locally grown produce famous for the Kyoto region. Our rooms were incredibly clean an...

Beautiful Ryokan with historic significance (used to be inhabited by a member of the imperial family). Comfortable and spacious accomodations; quiet, tucked away location, but still convenient to get into key sites of Kyoto. Delicious traditional Japanese meals and helpful staff who are members of the family who have owned and operated the property for many decades.

Excellent place to eat. It’s a beautiful building situated on secluded and extremely pretty grounds. I’ve never slept here, but have eaten here many times. The food is wonderfully presented and of an extremely high standard. Definitely visit for lunch if you’re in Kyoto. Enjoy!
