Expert Review: Krafft Basel

Krafft Basel, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently earns high praise from guests for its unique blend of historic charm, modern comfort, and prime riverside location in Basel, Switzerland.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Krafft Basel generally receives "fabulous" to "exceptional" ratings from guests, often scoring 8.0 and above on various platforms. It is recognized by the Michelin Guide as a "very special stay" (One Michelin Key), reflecting a strong positive sentiment for its quality and overall guest experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests particularly love the hotel's stunning location directly on the Rhine River, offering picturesque views and easy access to the city's attractions. The highly attentive, friendly, and welcoming staff is a recurring highlight. The hotel's design, which thoughtfully combines its historical architecture with contemporary "Scandi-chic" interiors, also stands out. Amenities such as complimentary use of public transport with the BaselCard, free bicycle rentals, and often a water/tea/coffee station on each floor are also appreciated.

3. Room Quality

Krafft Basel offers 60 individually furnished rooms, some of which are located in an opposing annex (Consum Residence). The rooms blend old-world details like parquet floors, restored tiles, original radiators, and wainscoting with modern updates. Guests frequently describe the rooms as very comfortable, clean, and well-designed. Many rooms boast gratifying views of the Rhine, especially those with distinctive arcade balconies. Modern conveniences include flatscreen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, docking stations, Moka Efti coffee, and L'Occitane bath amenities. Some rooms also offer a personalized pillow menu and hypo-allergenic bedding.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's on-site Restaurant Krafft offers international cuisine with a modern interpretation of French dishes. Guests can enjoy lunch, dinner, and al fresco dining on the terrace, which provides breathtaking views of the Rhine. The breakfast, available as a buffet or continental option (for a surcharge), is highly rated by guests for its variety and quality. There is also a downstairs lounge called Schnooggeloch and a wine bar, Consum, located next door, specializing in charcuterie and cheese boards.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Krafft Basel is consistently lauded as exemplary. Guests frequently describe the staff as "courteous," "welcoming," "excellent," "helpful," "friendly," and "attentive". Their hospitality contributes significantly to the positive guest experience, making visitors feel well taken care of.

6. Location & Accessibility

Krafft Basel boasts an outstanding location in the heart of the city, right on the bank of the Rhine River with its Mediterranean-style promenade. It is situated next to the historic Mittlere Brücke and within easy walking distance to numerous shops, restaurants, Christmas markets, and major attractions like Basel Town Hall, Basler Münster, and various museums. The hotel offers excellent accessibility, providing guests with a free BaselCard upon check-in, which includes complimentary use of public transport within Basel City and surrounding areas, including free transfer from EuroAirport or Basel main train stations. Tram lines are also conveniently close.

7. Value & Pricing

While Switzerland is generally an expensive destination, Krafft Basel is often considered to offer good value for its quality and prime location. Prices for a one-night stay for two adults can start from around $256.52, though rates vary depending on dates and policies. The added benefit of the free BaselCard for public transport enhances its value proposition.

8. Common Complaints

Some guests have noted minor issues, such as the absence of coffee, tea, and water makers directly in the rooms, though these are readily available on each floor. Given its historic nature, some guests have mentioned creaky floors, which are largely seen as adding to the building's charm rather than being a significant issue. A more substantial recurring complaint is potential noise. Some rooms may experience noise from nearby bars and the lively streets, particularly those not facing the quieter side or during events like Christmas markets. There is also ongoing construction work nearby in Rheingasse Street until 2027, which might impact the immediate surroundings. One reviewer mentioned poor soundproofing and noise from the floor above or the street late into the night.

Loved our stay here. No complaints at all - every staff member was great and truly professional. The breakfast crew was great. Specially Marc. He was all over it. Spoke several languages , was the most efficient and hardest working person I've seen there to the point he made me tired just watching him work. The mineral water station you have on each floor was the best thing ever !!! After night of...

Pretty, historical building. Well appointed with nice details such as nespresso machines and water on every floor. Lovely breakfast in the restaurant space facing the river. Could walk or tram everywhere I wished to go. My twin room was small but nicely designed, fine if you are not planning to be in your room much. Restaurant is not open late. NOTE: If staying in December, a Christmas market take...

First off, the staff is AMAZING and so helpful! They are so friendly and go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. The only reason I give them 4 stars is because the room was small and lacked decor. While comfy it felt a little cold. Also construction was our view. I do realize that is not their fault and the staff certainly made up for it.

Spending 5 nights in Basel visiting friends. Stopped at Krafft on their recommendation and was not disappointed. I was in a Junior Suite on the opposite side of the street from the main building and it was excellent. Very well sized and everything in the room was of a high quality. The service from everyone I met was exceptional - professional but very friendly and warm. I ate lunch in the restaur...

The experience you get likely depends on the room; some are very small. Street facing rooms face a large construction site at the moment. Taking a shower is a struggle because the bathroom is so tiny that even as a small person you cannot get in or out without touching the sink and toilet. The water temperature is not constant either. Upper floor is noisy and you basically stay between janitor ser...

We stayed here our last night on a twelve day trip. It was a perfect ending! We floated the Rhine with the locals all day and ate at local restaurants and got Gelato twice! The room was huge and even had a disco room! Highly recommend!
