Expert Review: Onyado Chikurintei
Onyado Chikurintei in Takeo, Japan, stands out as an exceptional ryokan, recognized with the prestigious Two Michelin Keys, signifying an "exceptional stay". Previously, it received the highest honor of five red pavilions in the Michelin Guide Fukuoka, Saga 2014. Guests consistently praise its serene atmosphere, luxurious accommodations, and impeccable service, making it a highly sought-after destination.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Onyado Chikurintei is overwhelmingly positive, with guests describing their stays as luxurious, tranquil, and exceptional. It is celebrated for offering a profound sense of seclusion and privacy, combined with very high standards of service. The property provides a deeply calming experience, integrated seamlessly with nature.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly enchanted by the ryokan's integration with the expansive Mifuneyama Rakuen garden, which offers breathtaking seasonal views. Many rooms feature private outdoor onsen baths, allowing for intimate relaxation amidst nature. The modern Zen-like design and minimal yet elegant furnishings throughout the ryokan are also frequently highlighted. The complimentary guest lounge, "Kaguya," offering Dutch Water Drip Coffee, local beers, umeshu (plum wine), and Japanese tea, is a much-appreciated amenity. The ryokan also holds the distinction of having hosted members of the Japanese Royal Family.
3. Room Quality
Onyado Chikurintei boasts only 11 uniquely designed suites, each thoughtfully laid out to maximize its lush surroundings. Rooms feature clean, modern Zen aesthetics with minimal furniture and large sliding doors that open to captivating views of bamboo groves, flowering trees, or Mount Mifune. Many suites are equipped with private outdoor baths, moon-viewing decks, and even private walking paths directly into the Mifuneyama Rakuen garden. Guests can choose between traditional Japanese futon mattresses, which have been noted for their comfort, or Western beds in Japanese-style rooms. A notable aspect of the service is that rooms are refreshed each time guests step out, even for a short period.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at Onyado Chikurintei is a cornerstone of its luxury, with all meals, including both dinner and breakfast, served privately in the guest rooms. The kaiseki dinners are meticulously prepared, utilizing high-quality, local ingredients from the Saga region, with dishes sometimes featuring Saga steak or fresh lobster. Reviewers praise the culinary team for carefully selecting, preparing, and arranging each dish to match the room's interior, atmosphere, views, and the current season. Breakfasts are described as hearty, typically including a selection of raw and cooked fish, tamago (rolled egg omelette), Japanese soup, rice with pickles, and tofu. While generally praised, one reviewer suggested a preference for a greater assortment of smaller dishes rather than fewer, larger ones, noting some unique combinations.
5. Service & Staff
The hospitality at Onyado Chikurintei receives widespread acclaim. The staff are described as highly attentive, hospitable, and knowledgeable, with some speaking English. They are often noted for their constant bowing and their willingness to go above and beyond, such as providing sightseeing information, offering flexibility with requests like providing chairs and tables instead of floor seating, and even serving fruits purchased by guests from a local farm.
6. Location & Accessibility
Onyado Chikurintei is situated in a serene area at the foot of Mount Mifune, directly adjacent to the expansive Mifuneyama Rakuen garden. This location provides stunning natural beauty throughout the seasons, from cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring to illuminated autumn foliage. The ryokan is approximately 2 kilometers from the center of Takeo Onsen, a historic hot spring town with a 1300-year history. Complimentary shuttle service is available to and from Takeo Onsen Station upon advance request. Travel times include about 1 hour and 10 minutes by car from Fukuoka Airport and 40 minutes from Nagasaki Airport. The sister property, Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel, which features TeamLab art installations, is also within walking distance.
7. Value & Pricing
As a luxury ryokan and a Michelin Two-Keys property, Onyado Chikurintei is priced accordingly. Past reviews from 2016 cited rates around JPY 49,410 to JPY 60,210 per person per night, depending on the room and meal enhancements. More recent averages suggest a typical price range of JPY 60,000 - JPY 79,999. Guests generally consider the experience to be well worth the cost, given the high level of service, quality of accommodation, and exquisite dining. Booking during peak seasons like autumn and winter can be more expensive and challenging due to high demand. Direct reservations through their official website or by phone are recommended for potentially lower rates and benefits like earlier check-in.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have been noted. One reviewer, while praising the overall dining, expressed a desire for a greater variety of smaller dishes during dinner, finding some combinations to be "strange" or "dry". Another recurring point is the difficulty in securing reservations for the higher-category rooms, particularly during peak seasons, with online booking platforms often only releasing limited lower-tier rooms. It's noted that phone reservations might offer more options and access to top-tier rooms like "Shuho".

Style. Traditional timeless ryokan Setting. In the middle of a garden/park created for a feudal lord in 1845 Explore. Takeo & Kyushu. Rooms. Only 11 rooms. I was in Kasho, with its own outdoor onsen, hammock and can walk down to the garden from the backyard @ the hotel. Superb service. Even had fresh bath towels delivered in the morning along with breakfast. It was really hot when I was her...

Superlative experiences. Worth revisiting (I returned after a few months). Peaceful and aesthetically pleasing ryokan with private onsen and connected directly from your room to Minefuyama garden (so basically you got the garden to yourself before and after garden opening to public). Food was amazing and subtly done (even plain rice is good). Top of these, staffs’ hospitality is outstanding and g...

A very unique stay! Because of the Shinkansen being down, I had to last minute change my plans, but still was able to stay in “Hagaromo” for one night. Service was great from the very beginning. Coming from Funuoka, we took a short 5 minute taxi from the train station (that the ryokan covers!). When we got inside, we were shown our room, they lay down a tarp for your luggage, given welcome drinks...

Nice onsen hotel. In a beautiful scenic area. I stayed for 2 nights and I had one japanese and one Italian dinner. Both are good. They have a big wine cellar at the restaurant. Excellent service and some staffs speak English.

The staff were so friendly and took such great care of us during our stay. We don't speak Japanese so we used Google translate for most of our interactions. Had no issues with communication between us and the staff. Food was very yummy and definitely helped immerse us in the culture. The view from the room/onsen was absolutely stunning. 10/10 would come here again ☺️

九州一!excellent location, great interior decorations in Japanese style, with attentions in lot of details. The dinner is superb and you get to see the Kouyo light-up and private tea house. Second to none in Kyushu. Definitely should revisit again.
