Expert Review: Aroma Tulum
Aroma Tulum, a Michelin Key Selected property in the heart of Tulum, Mexico, offers a distinct, moody, and atmospheric experience that sets it apart from the typical beachfront eco-resorts. It has garnered attention for its unique design and urban setting, catering to travelers looking for a blend of modern comfort and a vibrant town experience.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general sentiment for Aroma Tulum appears to be positive, with guests appreciating its unique design and central location. It is considered a charming boutique hotel offering good value. However, some guests have reported significant issues, which will be detailed in the "Common Complaints" section.
2. Key Highlights
Guests frequently praise Aroma Tulum for its modernist design, which features polished concrete floors and contemporary furniture, providing a chic, sophisticated ambiance. The hotel's rooftop terrace and stylish bar that extends into the garden are popular spots, with occasional live music or a DJ. Its strategic location in the city center is also a significant highlight.
3. Room Quality
Aroma Tulum's suites are described as elegantly designed and comfortable, with a blend of modern amenities and traditional Mexican touches. The rooms often feature polished concrete floors, modernist furniture, and in some suites, black walls and ceilings for a distinctive, atmospheric look. Comforts include premium bedding, air conditioning, free in-room WiFi, and safes. Some rooms also offer private pools, though their privacy has been a point of contention for some guests. Available room types include Junior Suites (24 sqm with Queen Bed), Master Suites (41 sqm with two Queen Beds), Pool Suites (39 sqm), and Suites with Balcony (39 sqm).
4. Dining Experience
Aroma Tulum offers a complimentary self-serve continental breakfast daily, typically from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. While the hotel itself doesn't have a full restaurant beyond breakfast, its urban location means numerous dining options are within a short walking distance. The on-site Aroma Cafe Tulum is highly regarded, serving specialty coffee, tea, fresh juices, smoothies, and a full breakfast and lunch menu. It's known for sourcing local and organic ingredients and has a laid-back vibe with outdoor seating. Hotel guests receive a 15% discount at Aroma Cafe Tulum.
5. Service & Staff
The hotel is noted for its attentive and multilingual staff, who are available to provide airport shuttle service and 24-hour front desk assistance, though the front desk has limited hours. Guests have generally found the staff to be welcoming and kind, offering recommendations. Concierge services, tour/ticket assistance, luggage storage, and bicycle rentals are also available.
6. Location & Accessibility
Aroma Tulum boasts a strategic location in the Colonia Centro area of Tulum, a block away from the main avenue. This urban setting provides easy access to the town's nightlife, shopping landmarks like Tulum Bazaar, Casa Hernandez, and La Lupita Boutique, as well as unique restaurants. The beach is approximately a fifteen-minute drive away. The hotel is conveniently close to the Tulum Bus station, making it accessible for exploring other parts of the Riviera Maya and attractions like the Tulum Ruins (4.2 km away) and Parque Dos Ojos. Bike rentals are available for exploring the nearby Mayan ruins.
7. Value & Pricing
Aroma Tulum is presented as an "affordable luxury" option in Tulum. While specific pricing can vary, one source indicates an average price of around $82 per room, significantly lower than the city's average of $309, suggesting good value for a boutique hotel. There is also a resort fee of MXN 98.00 per accommodation, per night, and a damage deposit of MXN 1600 collected before check-in. Children under 11 can stay for free when using existing beds.
8. Common Complaints
Despite its positive attributes and Michelin Key selection, Aroma Tulum has faced some recurring criticisms. A significant complaint involves rooms being damp and smelling of sewer. Additionally, some guests have found the "private" pools to lack actual privacy, as they can be overlooked by others. Lack of hot water in private pools or outdoor tubs has also been reported. It's also worth noting that the property does not have elevators, meaning upper floors are accessible by stairs only, and pets are not allowed.

Staff is friendly and breakfast was so fresh and delicious. The room was very big. I was surprised. It was two king size beds! And I love the balcony! The room was clean. Very quiet so I could sleep well. The sad part was that the toilet seat in the bathroom was broken. And pool was unclean so we couldn’t go inside pool. But it’s not big deal. Price was so cheap and we could enjoy!!!

Positives: Staff was nice and welcoming. They were also generally accommodating. The beds were comfortable Cons: the “free” breakfast is very basic. For “extra” things to make it a complete meal you will have to pay. It is not as nice as the pictures. I will link down below. The rooms had a dark vibe but it was too the point where I could not get dressed properly it was so dark in the rooms. We ...

I was floored that this hotel was so cheap for how absolutely beautiful it is and for how much is included! It's really worth it, only about a 20 minute bike ride from the beach which they provide for you for free! The free breakfast is great, the staff is so nice, and the pool and rooftop are amazing! We also loved that this was an easy trip to the beach but also right in the middle of the pueblo...

What an amazing little cafe! We stayed down the road at Una Vida for 5 nights and visited this cafe every morning as everything is so perfect. The food not only comes beautifully presented, but it tastes amazing too! The service is 10/10, the gentleman who served us every morning remembered us and welcomed us back each day. I could not recommend this cafe any more, if you visit, you will not be di...

This is a perfect breakfast spot if you are staying in tulum! It has cozy and welcoming atmosphere, the food is fantastic, and the staff is AMAZING. We have come here everyday for breakfast so far and we just can’t get enough! Definitely recommend this place (and I never leave reviews)

Only stayed here 1 day and hated it. We arrived very late last night and needed a room to sleep well before a busy day. Unfortunately, within a few hours we hear very loud noises - they are banging on the roof with hammers! I understand it's important to maintain the hotel but this completely ruined the night. And the repairs continued all morning. Huge lack of consideration for guests.
