Expert Review: Hotel Greystone

Hotel Greystone, a distinguished Michelin One-Key property in Miami Beach, offers a blend of historic Art Deco charm and contemporary luxury, primarily catering to an adults-only clientele. The hotel underwent a significant $65-million renovation, reopening in 2021, which aimed to preserve its 1930s facade while transforming its interiors into a modern, stylish retreat.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general sentiment for Hotel Greystone is largely positive, with guests frequently praising its stylish design, prime location, and exceptional staff. On review platforms, it often scores highly, with Booking.com showing an "8.3 Very Good" rating and the Michelin Guide indicating a "Guest Best" score of 19.1 out of 20 based on verified stays. Many consider it a "Small Luxury Hotel with exceptional nice staff."

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several aspects that make Hotel Greystone stand out:

  • Exceptional Staff & Service: Numerous reviews commend the friendly, helpful, and professional nature of the hotel staff, from the front desk to the rooftop bar and Kobo cafe.
  • Modern Art Deco Design: The hotel's beautifully restored 1930s Art Deco facade seamlessly transitions into a modern and lively interior, offering a "calming but never cold" minimalist-luxe aesthetic.
  • Rooftop Pool & Bar: The rooftop area with its pool, cocktail bar, chilled tunes, and views along Collins Avenue is a major draw for relaxation and socializing.
  • Prime Location: Its central position on Collins Avenue, just a short walk from the beach and various attractions, is consistently lauded.
  • Cleanliness: The property is frequently described as "spotless" and "exceptionally clean."

3. Room Quality

The 91 rooms and suites at Hotel Greystone are designed with minimalist-luxe interiors that balance contemporary style with comfort. They feature soothing cream tones, organic textures from woven carpets, and built-in wooden headboards and storage.

  • Comfort & Design: Guests find the rooms beautiful, clean, and comfortable, often noting the plush beds and stylish design. The bathrooms are well-appointed with large showers, Malin+Goetz toiletries, bathrobes, and slippers. Some rooms and suites offer unique amenities such as private terraces with outdoor showers and jacuzzis.
  • Amenities: Standard room amenities include air conditioning, minibars, laptop-compatible safes, pillowtop beds with premium bedding, flat-screen TVs with digital channels, and complimentary WiFi.
  • Size: Room sizes vary, for example, Courtyard King rooms are around 234 sq ft, Standard Kings 231 sq ft, while larger suites like the Roof Suite Terrace can be over 1000 sq ft.

4. Dining Experience

Hotel Greystone offers a diverse dining experience across its venues:

  • Sérêvène: This flagship restaurant serves an inventive French-Japanese hybrid cuisine under the direction of chef Pawan Pinisetti. It's described as a seafood-forward, small-plates-centered gem.
  • Kobo: This cafe is the go-to spot for a healthy, gourmet breakfast, or simply coffee and croissants. It's located in a secluded, leafy courtyard, offering a tranquil setting.
  • Rooftop Sora Bar: Located by the pool, this bar offers craft cocktails, sangria, light bites, and provides a vibrant atmosphere with music.
  • Greystone Bar: A "dark and moody space" downstairs for classic drinks, ideal for starting a night out.

While some guests praise the "excellent breakfast in the courtyard," there have been recurring complaints about the breakfast offering, with some finding it to have "few options" and "very poor" value, especially if booked as part of the room rate.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Hotel Greystone receives overwhelmingly positive feedback. Guests consistently describe the staff as "super helpful," "very friendly and informative," "kind and attentive," and "professional and empathic." Specific individuals, including front desk staff and managers, have been singled out for their exceptional hospitality. The staff is noted for their willingness to make guests' stays enjoyable and to address concerns promptly.

6. Location & Accessibility

Hotel Greystone boasts a "great location" right on Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, making it "just about as central as it gets."

  • Proximity to Beach: It's described as a "skip and a hop" or a "two-minute stroll" from the beach, with the hotel providing organized beach chairs and towels.
  • Nearby Attractions: The hotel is close to many good restaurants, Lincoln Road, Ocean Drive, the Botanical Garden, and various art galleries and shopping areas.
  • Transport: Its central location makes it an easy drive from most of Miami's main attractions, and day trips to Fort Lauderdale or the Keys are also viable.

7. Value & Pricing

Pricing at Hotel Greystone generally places it in the luxury boutique category. While many guests feel it offers "great value for rooms" given its location and amenities, some have expressed that the property can be "far too expensive" for the level of service experienced, particularly in cases of service lapses. Room rates may start from around $252 per night.

  • Resort Fee: A resort fee of $42 + tax is applied nightly, which typically includes rooftop pool access, beach access (with loungers and towels), day passes to an off-site gym, and in-room Wi-Fi and digital publications. However, some guests have found the "beach club" experience (rights to use two worn-out chairs from a rental agency with no food/beverage service) to be disappointing and not worth the resort fee.

8. Common Complaints

While overall reviews are positive, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:

  • Breakfast Quality and Value: A frequent complaint centers on the breakfast options at Kobo cafe, with some guests feeling it's limited, poor in choice, and not worth the price if included in the room rate.
  • Inconsistent Service: Despite generally positive feedback on staff, a few guests have reported issues with slow service at the pool, incorrect food orders, and requests made via in-room tablets not being fulfilled.
  • Room Layout/Noise: Some rooms have been described as a bit small or having "odd" layouts, such as a sink next to the bed instead of in the bathroom. There have also been mentions of rooms being loud due to proximity to other establishments, although some guests were provided earplugs.
  • Beach Club Experience: The "beach club" offering, which provides access to beach chairs but no food/beverage service or towels directly at the beach, has been a source of dissatisfaction, with some considering it a "joke" and not justifying the resort fee.
  • Lack of Storage/Workspace: Some guests on business trips or longer stays found a lack of sufficient storage for clothes, drawers, or dedicated workspace like a desk in their rooms.

Great location. Within walking distance of beach, Ocean Drive, Espanada Way, Lincoln Mall. Restaurants everywhere. Did have an issue with not hot water two days but was resolved and resort fees were waved for those days. The staff was absolutely amazing, friendly and professional. Daniella at the front desk. I've got back from Miami and after a fantastic stay at Hotel Greystone. The roof top pool is amazing, there's plenty of sunbeds and it gets the sun all day. The food was delicious, especially at Serevene, we had our X-mas day meal here, and it was the best meal we ate the whole trip. The room are spotless, fairly minimalist, and the bed was comfy. It was really quiet at night, which isn't that ...

The hotel was pleasant, comfortable, and we had a lovely and spacious room. We liked it a lot! The lobby and front patio are nice. The staff - Julie, Julian, and Marcos - were all very nice and accommodating. I would most certainly return and recommend the property for a stay minutes from the beach and boardwalk!

We used this hotel during rather cool days and nights in Miami Beach and the hallways and rooms were cold with no way to make the room warner -- they gave us a heater to use and that did work. The rooms are a good size but do NOT have bureaus with draws, so you have to adapt by using small shelves. Not sure what that's all about. Also, the first room had a "pick-a-boo" glass shower as part of th...

The hotel is very nice, the service is impeccable, and the location is amazing. Go to the restaurant, Servene - it's absolutely gobsmacking good. But there is a caveat. If they place you on the south side of the building, there's a chance you'll have one of the rooms right above an active nightclub that ramps up really hard right around 10 p.m. It's a bad sign when they provide you with earplugs...
