- Amenities: Key amenities that guests appreciate include a fabulous rooftop bar offering wood-fired pizzas and craft cocktails with sweeping views of the city and Mississippi River, an exquisite restaurant, a charming coffee shop ("The Parlour"), room service, and a 24-hour fitness center. Complimentary handmade chocolates upon check-in and a token for free coffee from The Parlour are also frequently highlighted as delightful touches. In-room amenities typically include 48-inch flat-screen HD televisions, beverage coolers, irons, ironing boards, and safes.
4. Dining Experience
The Charmant Hotel offers an exceptional dining experience across its various venues:
- The Restaurant: Serves rustic French-inspired cuisine using regionally sourced ingredients in an exquisitely designed, open-concept space with refined nods to the original chocolate factory. It is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Guests have raved about dishes such as the Ribeye, calling it "magnificent."
- The Rooftop Terrace: A popular spot offering wood-fired pizzas and craft cocktails with striking panoramic views of the city and Mississippi River, especially enjoyable in warmer weather.
- The Parlour: Functions as a charming coffee bar during the day, serving artisanal espresso drinks, pastries, and the hotel's signature hot chocolate. By night, it transforms into a spirits and wine bar.
- Lobby Bar & Lounge: Offers a cozy atmosphere for drinks and a modified food and beverage menu during "Charming Hour," where hotel guests 21 and older receive a complimentary glass of wine.
- Sweets Bar: Located adjacent to the check-in desk, this 24-hour counter specializes in handmade chocolates and pastries from CocoVaa Chocolatier.

5. Service & Staff
The service at The Charmant Hotel is a consistent highlight, with staff frequently described as incredibly friendly, warm, professional, attentive, and helpful. Guests have shared experiences of staff going above and beyond, such as offering ice packs for injuries, driving guests to rental car agencies, and providing thoughtful anniversary cards. The concierge staff is readily available to assist with requests and recommendations. While most guest reviews are overwhelmingly positive regarding staff, some older employee reviews (from 2017-2023) on job sites mention issues with management, high turnover, and a "drama-filled environment" in certain departments, which could impact staff morale. However, more recent employee reviews (2022-2023) also highlight supportive environments and opportunities for advancement.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Charmant Hotel is ideally situated in the vibrant downtown La Crosse City Center, just a block from the Mississippi River. This central location offers exceptional accessibility and allows guests to walk to numerous attractions, including:
- Riverside Park and International Friendship Gardens
- Dahl Auto Museum, Church of the Holy Comforter, and Hixon House
- Pump House Regional Arts Center and Children's Museum of La Crosse
- La Crosse Center Arena and nearby shops, bars, and restaurants
- Grandad Bluff Park for panoramic city views is a short distance away.
The hotel is a 15-minute drive from La Crosse Regional Airport (LSE) and about a 2.5-hour drive from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Valet parking and on-site parking are available, with some guests finding street parking convenient.
7. Value & Pricing
While The Charmant Hotel is positioned as a luxury boutique property, many guests feel it offers exceptional value for money, especially when compared to other accommodations that may lack its charm, sophistication, and top-notch amenities. Typical room prices can range from approximately $183 for a standard room to over $400 for larger suites, depending on the season and room type. Guests have noted that while some might find the price a bit high, the overall experience justifies the cost.
8. Common Complaints
While guest feedback is overwhelmingly positive, some minor and recurring issues have been mentioned:
- Breakfast Fruit Quality: One guest noted spoiled fresh fruit during breakfast.
- No In-Room Coffee Makers: Rooms do not have coffee makers, though a token for a complimentary coffee at The Parlour is provided.
- Rooftop Terrace Crowding: The rooftop bar can become quite busy with locals, making it difficult for hotel guests to enjoy.
- Room Service Issues: One guest experienced late room service and a difficult-to-open fruit plate cover.
- Parking: While parking options exist, one guest specifically mentioned that "parking is not great."
- Anniversary Dining Access: Some guests celebrating anniversaries were not informed that they would be unable to eat or drink at the hotel's restaurant or bar, which was problematic given limited alternatives in La Crosse.

Beautiful hotel with well appointed rooms. Decor is beautiful and the wind is very comfortable. At present they are remodeling the bar, but had lunch in a light dinner at the restaurant. Abbey, our server was outstanding, even though she was extremely busy. Very personable and did a fantastic job. Later, when we came down for a light bite, she took care of us again along with super bartender Kyan...

The room was superb. The bed was comfy. Temp was great. We could see some of Rotary lights from our room. The room decor so beautiful. The pillows were terrible. They were hard and made a difference all night long. We did appreciate the beautiful room.

Above and beyond customer service, I can't stress enough how quick and kind the staff was, from front desk to cleaning crew they were attentive, and made my many requests for my family seem effortless. And I needed a lot of help too! The beds are comfy, the vintage is fun, and nothing is overwhelmingly over the top or feeling fake. It's just a comfortable and happy hotel. I stayed here for a few nights in November. It was one of the best hotel stays I’ve ever had. I love everything about this hotel, including the fact that they put the resources into preserving the history and legacy of it as a chocolate factory. The setting is breathtaking - right on the Mississippi River. The staff were really nice. They have a family vibe. And the restaurant is out of this world...

Amazing stay! The Charmont is where grit meets elegance. A truly well appointed historical preservation renovation with equally attentive staff. We stayed on the fifth floor with a soaker tub and a view of the river. The bed and sheets and pillows were top notch. We had a very restful, peaceful nights stay. A bit pricey but absolutely gorgeous and comfortable.

We’ve stayed at The Charmant boutique hotel six or seven times over the years. La Crosse is an interesting college town. Le Charmant has always been a delight. Not so much this time. We made reservations for the “Classic King Suite.” Quite pricey. “Suite” is short for “suite of rooms” and at every other hotel I’ve ever stayed at you get two rooms in a suite, usually bed room and a sitting room. N...
