Expert Review: The Charlie

The Charlie, a distinguished One Michelin Key property in the Los Angeles area, offers a uniquely charming and luxurious stay, often described by guests as a "hidden gem" in West Hollywood. This historic all-suite hotel, once owned by Charlie Chaplin, provides a tranquil English garden-like escape amidst the city's vibrant energy.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Charlie is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently praising its historical charm, luxurious ambiance, and exceptional privacy. It holds a One Michelin Key designation, signifying "a very special stay" and recognition for its thoughtful design, consistent service, comfort, and individualized guest experience. Review platforms consistently show high ratings, with Booking.com indicating scores of 9.8 for location, cleanliness, and comfort, and 9.5 for staff and facilities. Guests often feel it's a "home away from home," blending historic allure with modern convenience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests particularly love The Charlie for its blend of old Hollywood glamour and contemporary luxury. Key highlights include its rich history as Charlie Chaplin's former residence and the meticulously restored English-style bungalows. The property's lush garden grounds, tranquil fountains, and private patios offer a serene and exclusive atmosphere. The hands-off, discreet service ensures a sense of privacy, making it a favorite among those seeking a relaxing and intimate escape. Its spacious, apartment-style suites equipped with full kitchens and laundry facilities are a significant draw for extended stays or those preferring self-sufficiency.

3. Room Quality

The Charlie boasts 14 exquisitely designed suites, each named after an iconic Hollywood figure. These suites are individually styled to reflect a 1920s Hollywood vibe, featuring period decor, classic memorabilia, and even old-fashioned typewriters in some units. Each spacious suite provides an open living area, large windows, and a private patio or terrace overlooking the gardens. A standout feature is the fully equipped modern kitchen, complete with a full fridge, oven, stove, and all necessary cooking and dining ware. In-unit washer/dryers, flat-screen TVs, comfortable beds, and weekly fresh flowers contribute to a comfortable and functional stay. Guests are also treated to luxurious Grown Alchemist toiletries, plush bathrobes, and slippers.

4. Dining Experience

The Charlie does not feature a traditional on-site restaurant. Instead, the hotel emphasizes the convenience of its fully equipped, modern kitchens within each suite. This setup allows guests to prepare their own meals, which is highly appreciated by those seeking a "home away from home" experience or longer stays. There is a shared sun deck with an outdoor dining table available for guests to enjoy meals alfresco.

5. Service & Staff

The service at The Charlie consistently receives high praise from guests. Staff are frequently described as "friendly," "helpful," "informative," and "extremely helpful and pleasant". The Michelin Guide itself evaluates hotels based on the "quality and consistency of service". Guests appreciate the discreet and hands-off approach, which contributes to the private and exclusive feel of the property. Direct bookings may also receive a welcome gift amenity upon arrival. One guest noted that staff worked with them for an early arrival, demonstrating flexibility.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Charlie is centrally located in the heart of West Hollywood, situated on a quiet residential street. This "trendy" neighborhood is renowned for its high-energy nightlife, eclectic event venues, and proximity to famous shopping districts like Melrose Avenue and the Sunset Strip. Guests find the location highly walkable to numerous restaurants and shops. The hotel provides convenient gated on-site parking. While offering a peaceful retreat, it remains accessible to wider Los Angeles, approximately 10 km from the Wilshire / Western (LACMTA) station. Ride-sharing services like Waymo are also readily available in the area.

7. Value & Pricing

The Charlie is often cited as offering "exceptional value for money," particularly considering its luxury offerings and prime West Hollywood location, with an average room price around $499. While prices can range from $299 to $1229, recent bookings have shown rates between $468 and $715. The Michelin Guide considers "value for the price" as one of its key evaluation criteria. Guests generally perceive the cost as worthwhile for the unique, spacious, and amenity-rich experience provided.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor points of criticism have been noted. One guest mentioned that the standard check-in time of 5 PM and waiting until 5:30 PM was not ideal. Another suggested that more cutlery could be provided in the kitchens for guests entertaining additional visitors. A review from 2022 also pointed out the absence of ADA-compliant rooms. It's worth noting that the location, while praised for its walkability and West Hollywood vibe, might not be ideal for those specifically looking to be near downtown Los Angeles or who prefer a different neighborhood atmosphere.

We spent several days at The Charley over the Christmas holiday and would give them 10 stars if we could! Our visit was absolutely perfect, in every respect. After we booked, they reached out to coordinate our arrival, and the staff continued to shine throughout our stay. The lady who greeted us, and the gentleman who was in the office for the next few days, were both consummate professionals a...

Incredibly charming. My favorite place to stay in LA. Essentially like an Airbnb (dishwasher, clothes washer+dryer, full kitchen, etc) but with the full benefits of a hotel (cleaning staff, in-person concierge, dedicated parking). They’re even so thoughtful with things like real flowers and plants, and even a complimentary pie on Thanksgiving. Really can’t say enough good things about this gem. Wo...

A colleague and I recently stayed at The Charlie on a work trip and it was perfect. We initially booked a suite and a studio but ended up with a surprise upgrade to two beautiful suites. ❤️ The suites were spacious, spotless and comfortable — perfectly updated but retaining the character of the building's vintage with stained glass windows and exposed wood beams. And the staff were fantastic! I ...

Truely the most beautiful hotel we’ve ever stayed in! We researched where to stay in LA extensively and found The Charlie. It’s a window into the golden era of Hollywood, an escape from the world & a place where we felt very secure. The best hotel in LA. Our only complaint would be that there was a lot of gardening noise during the day, but if you’re busy exploring then it isn’t a problem.

This was a great place to stay for exploring Hollywood, LA, Santa Monica.... Comfortable rooms, lovely patios, and really a charming relaxing hideaway in busy Southern CA.

Family of four stayed in a two bedroom. What I loved was how it felt more like a home than a hotel room, which suits me much better. Not just the room amenities (such as a proper kitchen) but the decorating. There are a few reviews complaining about the service. This not a traditional hotel, so if looking for room service etc this is not for you. I found the front desk manager very pleasant, acco...
