Expert Review: Hotel Grand Stark
Hotel Grand Stark in Portland, United States, a Michelin Key Selected property, is generally praised for its stylish design, excellent service, and vibrant atmosphere in the Central Eastside neighborhood. It's often highlighted for its unique character, stepping away from typical hotel chain sterility.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Hotel Grand Stark is largely positive, with guests frequently describing it as "excellent" and a "hidden gem". It's celebrated for its distinctive personality and "quirky but clean and inviting" ambiance. While it holds a Michelin Key selection, indicating a high standard, some guests have pointed out specific drawbacks, particularly regarding noise and the immediate surrounding area. The hotel scores well in cleanliness, staff, and property conditions.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently love the hotel's attentive staff, its impressive on-site bar and restaurant, and its distinctive design. The atmosphere is described as "lively, convivial" and "unpretentious but quietly luxe". The public spaces, including a "gallery-inspired central lobby" and a communal "Study Hall," are designed to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment, showcasing artwork by local artists. Thoughtful amenities in the rooms, such as Bellino linens, Diptyque bath products, and Nespresso machines, are also frequently appreciated. The hotel is known for its "careful tailoring to its settings" and its reflection of Portland's creative culture.
3. Room Quality
Hotel Grand Stark offers 57 guest rooms, including King, Queen, and Double-bedded options, ranging from 221 to 392 square feet. Rooms are described as "clean, eclectic, and comfortable," featuring a bold, modern design with neutral shades complemented by pops of green and teal. Each room includes fine Italian Bellino linens, plush robes, luxurious Diptyque bath amenities, a walk-in rain shower, a Nespresso coffee machine, a SMEG mini-refrigerator, a fully stocked minibar with gourmet snacks, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Some rooms also offer cozy seating areas and work desks. While many find the rooms comfortable and stylish, one guest noted an "odd layout" in a specific room, with the bed in the center and a lack of bedside plugs.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel features vibrant and fresh dining options. Grand Amari is an upscale and intimate Italian restaurant open for dinner, serving traditional pasta and seafood dishes with a selection of wines. It also offers vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free options. The Little Bitter Bar acts as a relaxed, eclectic lobby bar, offering small bites, pizzas, and an impressive cocktail menu, recalling the hotel's historic founding. Additionally, there's a deli providing pastries and light meal fare. Some guests have noted inconsistencies with promised breakfast pastries.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Hotel Grand Stark consistently receive high praise. Guests frequently highlight the staff as "great," "friendly and accommodating," "fabulous," and "very kind". Front desk staff and valet crew members (like "Mike") are specifically mentioned for being helpful, welcoming, and going above and beyond to assist guests, even in challenging situations like filing police reports. The hospitality contributes significantly to the positive guest experience.
6. Location & Accessibility
Located in Portland's Central Eastside, Hotel Grand Stark is situated in a rapidly "up-and-coming corner" outside the traditional downtown core, providing a vantage point into Portland's creative and youthful character. It's conveniently located near the Oregon Convention Center (a 12-minute walk), the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (1 mile), and Lan Su Chinese Garden (19-minute walk). The area offers access to local craft beer spots and unique coffee shops. However, the location has drawn criticism from some guests who describe it as an "insanely bad location" due to the proximity of a homeless shelter, raising concerns about safety at night. There is also noted construction in the area.
7. Value & Pricing
Many guests perceive Hotel Grand Stark as offering good value, describing it as a "fun, affordable hotel with great art and modern design" that provides "luxurious touches at a reasonable price". While specific room rates can vary, the hotel is generally seen as an appealing choice for those seeking a stylish, non-chain hotel experience. A significant cost consideration, however, is the valet parking, which is priced around $50 to $58 per night and often cited as expensive.
8. Common Complaints
The most frequently reported issues include:
- Noise: A significant number of guests have reported poor sound insulation, particularly from windows, leading to considerable street noise disrupting their stay. One guest noted that "windows are like non existent. No sound barrier at all. You could hear the smallest noise on the street".
- Location Safety: Some guests have expressed discomfort and safety concerns due to the urban environment, mentioning a nearby homeless shelter and feeling uneasy walking around at night.
- Parking Cost: The high cost of valet parking ($50-$58 per night) is a recurring point of contention for many visitors.
- Breakfast Inconsistencies: At least one guest noted that expected pastries for breakfast were not provided.
- Room Layout: While generally well-designed, one guest experienced an "awkward" room layout with the bed in the center and insufficient bedside electrical outlets.
- Heat Pump Smell: A single complaint mentioned a "sewer-like" smell from the heat pump.

The service was really great, check in easy and fast, the only thing we had a small issue with was the room because of the windows. The windows didn’t really keep the noise of the city out. Other than that the beds are comfy, the hotel is warm and comfortable and the coffee served in the morning is delicious. We will definitely stay here again

I've enjoyed both of my stays at the Grand Stark Hotel in the past couple months as I've used it for business travel. Convenient downtown location, very clean, large quiet rooms with fun decor and large comfortable beds in a charming historic building. Street parking has worked for me both times. Pleasantly surprised that I've heard zero traffic noise in my rooms, much quieter than all the other d...

Feel compelled to write a review to counterbalance some of the negatives. I stay here whenever I’m in town and look forward to it! The hotel has great design and though the rooms are compact they are a smart use of space. The staff is always friendly and they have a great bar. Yes there are a lot of homeless outside but that’s more of a problem with Portland than it is with the hotel. There are l...

The hotel itself isn't terrible, but its location is a severe downside. It's literally across the street from a homeless shelter. There was open crack use less than 20 feet from the front door of the hotel. Homeless carrying weapons congregate at the corner store and out front of the shelter across the street. They weren't outwardly aggressive and I never felt necessarily unsafe, but it's not exac...

The hotel itself is just okay, maybe a bit over priced for the value but that's late stage capitalism for you. The worst part is that they added fraudulent minibar charges. I got an emailed invoice 6 hours after checking out and luckily I was still in Portland so I could go back to the hotel (and waste my time) to contest it. They refunded the charges instantly, which made it even sketchier becaus...

It's a charming building but management was disappointing. The off-level pocket door in our room locked my partner in the bathroom and took a lot of work and luck to get it open again. After the ordeal we were offered $15 off the mini bar, which we refused...frankly it felt insulting to equate the distress of the situation to 2.5 snickers bars. On a more minor note I also noted to them the conditi...
