Expert Review: The Royal Sonesta Portland Downtown

The Royal Sonesta Portland Downtown, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a blend of elegance and quirky charm in the heart of Portland, providing guests with a memorable and often highly-rated experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Royal Sonesta Portland Downtown is overwhelmingly positive, with an impressive overall rating of 8.7. Guests frequently describe their stays as "memorable" and "dreamy," highlighting high satisfaction levels. The hotel consistently exceeds expectations, reflected in strong individual ratings across various categories.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several aspects of the hotel. Its "amazing location" in downtown Portland is a recurring highlight, offering easy access to attractions, shopping, and dining. The "beautifully designed space" and "fresh yet elegant" decor also receive frequent commendation, with some guests feeling it's like stepping into a "Wes Anderson film". Exceptional cleanliness, with a rating of 9.3, is another standout feature. Furthermore, the hotel is noted for its "great service" and the friendliness and helpfulness of its staff. Amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi, a 24-hour fitness center, and a pet-friendly policy are also appreciated.

3. Room Quality

The 221 well-appointed rooms are described as "impeccably clean" and "well designed," providing a comfortable and quiet retreat. Guests appreciate the spaciousness of the rooms, often mentioning "large bathrooms" and "high ceilings". The decor is vibrant, colorful, and unique, often characterized as "whimsical and memorable kitsch" or "artsy maximalist". Modern amenities, plush bedding, and flat-screen TVs are standard, with some suites offering city views. Yoga mats are available in rooms upon request. While most find the rooms comfortable, a few guests have noted issues with outdated decor or a lack of space due to the "funky junk" filling. Coffee makers are available upon request, although not standard in all rooms.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel features an on-site restaurant, Finch on 5th, which serves dinner and Pacific Northwest cuisine from local ingredients. The Red Star Tavern offers American-style cuisine and a popular happy hour. Guests have generally found the restaurant to be "excellent". The hotel also provides complimentary morning coffee and tea service, as well as a hosted evening wine service featuring Northwest regional wines in the lobby's fireside living room. Breakfast is available, though some guests mentioned it lacked certain staples and vegetarian options.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at The Royal Sonesta Portland Downtown consistently receive high praise, with a rating of 9.2. Guests describe the staff as "friendly," "attentive," "courteous," "helpful," and "professional," often going "above and beyond" to ensure a pleasant stay. The dedicated concierge service is readily available to assist with inquiries, transportation, and recommendations. Instances of staff lending umbrellas during rain and being informative about local places highlight their commitment to guest comfort. However, there have been isolated reports of slow service, particularly with room cleaning requests needing 24-hour advance notice, and some issues with redeeming experience credits or spa services.

6. Location & Accessibility

Strategically situated in downtown Portland, the hotel boasts an excellent location with a rating of 8.9. Guests appreciate being able to "walk everywhere downtown" and having "easy access to a myriad of attractions, shopping districts, and dining options". It is a short walk from Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Pearl District, and offers proximity to popular spots like Powell's City of Books, Tom McCall Waterfront Park, and the Portland Art Museum. The hotel is also conveniently located two blocks from a MAX light rail station and near Union Station, making public transportation readily accessible. While generally considered safe, one guest mentioned they might not feel safe walking alone on the immediate block at night.

7. Value & Pricing

With an average room price around $163, guests often find the hotel to offer "incredible value" for a luxury experience, especially considering its prime location and amenities. Many feel they receive more than what they pay for. However, there are additional charges to consider, such as a destination fee (though some report it being waived) and a significant valet parking fee, which has been a point of contention for some guests, costing around $55 per night.

8. Common Complaints

While guest feedback is largely positive, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted. A significant complaint concerns the high cost of valet parking. There have also been instances of cleanliness issues, including reports of mold and stains on carpets and couches, despite the hotel's high overall cleanliness rating. Some guests have experienced problems with room maintenance, such as broken bathroom doors or non-functional electrical sockets, and unreliable internet. Inconsistent experiences with room upgrades and difficulties redeeming hotel credits for services or dining have also been reported. Additionally, isolated incidents of poor staff behavior, like arguments overheard in the dining area or accusations of theft, have been mentioned in older reviews. A few guests have also reported issues with hot water availability.

I actually did not stay at this hotel but I guarantee I will be next time. The staff was very nice and professional. The reason I was there was for the restaurant called finch on fifth. Talk about great food!! The stroganoff, the Angus burger, the smoked buffalo wings, the steak, all were awesome! I couldn't remember the actual names but it was all really really good. I highly recommend it if you ...

Stayed here twice now. Rooms are spacious and quiet, you won't hear anyone else while in your room room. They're remodeled nicely as well. Great location too, plenty to walk to and a cheap Uber to other parts of Portland. Anything else I've stayed at in the price range has been a loud shoebox of a room.

I was so excited to head back here after many years away only to be disappointed. The rooms were “refreshed” over the years but not in a good way. This hotel feels sad. The lighting makes the lobby look drab. The wallpaper in the room was peeling. The elevator buttons only lit up in certain places. This was once my go to hotel in downtown Portland but there are better options do the price. My bigg...

We recently stayed at this hotel in Portland and had a generally good experience, though there are definitely opportunities for improvement. The location is excellent—right in a busy area and close to plenty of restaurants, which was very convenient. The hotel itself is nice overall, but on the pricier side for what you get. The room, however, had several drawbacks. The bathroom lacked an exhaust ...

We had a nice time staying at Royal Sonesta for two nights. Quirky hotel with unique rooms and a beautiful lobby. Our rate came with valet parking which I was happy to learn had in and out privileges. I appreciated their easy valet system. The room was large with a mini fridge (no microwave). There is a restaurant/bar attached but we didn’t get a chance to check it out. Very conveniently located ...

I had a lovely stay at the Royal Sonesta. It's decor is charming and elegant, from the fireplace in the lobby to the bird wallpaper. I appreciated the attention to detail in the room: the high quality bath products, the good lighting, nice pillows and heating/AC system that was not loud and didn't blow air too hard. Also I loved the super high ceilings and downtown location. For all of this, the p...
