Expert Review: Hotel Escondido Oaxaca

Hotel Escondido Oaxaca, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a sophisticated and culturally rich experience in the heart of Oaxaca City. Guests consistently praise its striking design, attentive service, and prime location, though some minor issues regarding noise and room amenities have been noted.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Hotel Escondido Oaxaca is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "beautifully designed," "exceptional," and "wonderful". It consistently receives high ratings for staff, cleanliness, and comfort, contributing to a strong overall guest satisfaction. Many reviews highlight a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere, with some guests returning for second visits.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several aspects of Hotel Escondido Oaxaca:

  • Design: The hotel masterfully blends a 19th-century house with a modern, neo-Brutalist structure, creating a "beautifully textured minimalist style" with Oaxacan artisan-made furnishings and textiles. Common areas are described as "super stylish" and feeling like an "Oasis in bustling Oaxaca" with plenty of natural light and plants.
  • Service: The staff is frequently lauded as "excellent," "friendly," "helpful," "hospitable," and "attentive," often going "above and beyond" to provide local recommendations and ensure a pleasant stay. A welcome cocktail is a frequently appreciated touch.
  • Location: The hotel boasts an "excellent" and "superb" central location in Oaxaca City, making it easy to walk to numerous tourist spots like Santo Domingo Temple (less than 0.6 miles), Oaxaca Cathedral (8-minute walk), and Zócalo (5-minute walk).
  • Amenities: Highlights include a rooftop pool and sun terrace, an inner courtyard, a restaurant, a bar, a co-working space, and free WiFi. The outdoor pool is often mentioned as a lovely spot to cool off in the afternoon.

3. Room Quality

The rooms are described as "comfortable," "beautiful," and "functional," adhering to the hotel's minimalist yet luxurious design aesthetic. Furnishings are handmade by local craftsmen, and textiles are designed by Oaxacan artists. Rooms feature amenities such as king beds, private bathrooms with rainfall showerheads, free toiletries, hairdryers, work desks, and TVs. Some rooms offer inner courtyard, garden, mountain, or city views. Patio and balcony rooms are particularly appreciated for their outdoor spaces. However, some guests in terrace rooms have reported issues with noise and insufficient air conditioning due to poor insulation, noting the heat from outside can penetrate the room easily.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's on-site restaurant offers Italian cuisine for lunch and dinner, with outdoor dining areas providing a pleasant setting. Breakfast is consistently praised as "lovely," "nice," and "very good," featuring offerings such as fresh fruits, cheeses, and breads, and continental breakfast is available daily. The tasting menu for dinner has also received positive feedback. While some consider the food "mediocre" on occasion, the coffee and drinks are generally well-regarded.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Hotel Escondido Oaxaca is a standout feature, frequently earning "exceptional" marks for their hospitality and attentiveness. Guests highlight their friendliness, helpfulness, and willingness to provide local recommendations. The welcome drink is a small but appreciated gesture that contributes to the warm reception.

6. Location & Accessibility

Hotel Escondido Oaxaca is centrally located in Oaxaca Centro, making it highly accessible to major attractions. It's within walking distance of the Zócalo, Oaxaca Cathedral, Benito Juarez Market, Santo Domingo Square, and the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. The hotel is approximately 3.7 miles from Oaxaca International Airport. While the central location is a major advantage for exploring the city on foot, some guests have noted that the hotel is situated on a main street, which can lead to it being "on the louder side at night," with significant traffic noise from buses and trucks. The hotel provides earplugs in rooms for light sleepers.

7. Value & Pricing

While the hotel is recognized for its beautiful design and excellent service, some guests have expressed that the "service and offering doesn't match the price," suggesting it can be a bit expensive for the amenities provided. Specific pricing information varies by date and room type, but it's positioned as a luxury property, reflected in its Michelin Key selection. Additional guests can be accommodated for $40 USD per person per night, and pets for $50 USD per night.

8. Common Complaints

The most recurring criticism revolves around noise, particularly in some rooms with terraces, where insulation issues can lead to loud street noise and difficulty maintaining a comfortable temperature with air conditioning. Some guests have also felt that the "offering is just a little sloppy" for the price point, noting the absence of amenities like a mini-bar, fridge, or coffee/tea facilities in rooms. There have also been occasional remarks about the pool area not being as clean as expected.

I was so excited to spend part of our trip to Oaxaca here to relax at the pool and enjoy some of the hotels AMAZING drinks - some of my favorite our whole trip - however the pool is right next to one of Oaxaca's busier roads with diesel powered Binnibuses going by constantly - it is very loud at the pool, with lots of exhaust and dust from t...

The daily continental breakfast was good, plenty of fresh juices, fruits, cold meats and cheeses and lovely baked goods. The st...

I am writing this review from our room at Hotel Escondido as we finish up a wonderful stay here. The property is stunning - from the finishes to the planting to all the artisanal details (the sitting room is a perfect place to read and relax!) and the beds are super comfortable. Yes, as some of the reviewers have mentioned there is some noise - but it’s a noisy city everywhere and it’s not so much...

Room was dark, scruffy and not great. Freezing at night. Partner got food poisoning from the fruit and breakfast and we were charged extra for the coffees even though we were told they were included in the “free breakfast”. It’s a walk from everywhere and wouldn’t recommend at all.

We had a super stay here in this beautiful hotel. There are so many cozy and beautiful places to hang out - the lush courtyards, rooftop pool and bar, patios and library. We loved all the massive plants, the staff were friendly, kind and helpful and we felt comfortable there. We probably would not include breakfast next time, though it was great for a continental breakfast, there are just so many ...
