Expert Review: The Rookery
The Rookery, a Michelin Key Selected property in London's fashionable Clerkenwell, consistently garners high praise for its unique blend of Georgian charm, antique elegance, and exceptional service. Guests frequently describe it as a "haven of calm" and a "delightful" departure from typical modern hotels.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The Rookery enjoys an overwhelmingly positive sentiment, with an overall rating of 9.3 on Booking.com and Agoda, and a 4.5/5 on Tripadvisor. Guests frequently use words like "exceptional," "wonderful," "charming," and "superb" to describe their stays. The hotel is particularly appreciated by those seeking a unique, character-filled experience over a generic hotel.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently adore The Rookery for its distinctive design, intimate atmosphere, and attentive service. Key highlights include:
- Historic Design & Character: The hotel is set within a row of 18th-century houses, meticulously preserving original features and offering a "Victorian fantasy" aesthetic. Each of the 33 rooms is individually styled and named after a historic Clerkenwell character.
- Exceptional Service: The staff is frequently lauded as "professional, helpful, and friendly," going "above and beyond" to ensure a memorable stay.
- Honesty Bar: The inviting honesty bar in a public "living room" space or conservatory is a beloved feature, allowing guests to relax and serve themselves drinks.
- Resident Cat: The hotel's resident cat, often named Bagheera or Lady Grey, adds to the homely and charming ambiance, often delighting guests during breakfast.
- Quiet Ambiance: Despite its central location, the hotel offers a serene and quiet environment, providing a welcome retreat from city bustle.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at The Rookery are a major draw, known for their spaciousness, period décor, and comfort. They feature sumptuous antique furniture, artwork, and often include unique elements like four-poster beds, wooden beams, and open fires. Guests praise the "super comfy" beds with "crisp cotton bed linen" for a good night's sleep.
Bathrooms are equally distinctive, often boasting large roll-top baths with original brass and copper plumbing, and quality "land&water" toiletries. While embracing historic charm, rooms also include modern necessities like flat-screen LCD TVs and free Wi-Fi. The Rook's Nest, a two-storey penthouse suite, offers particularly impressive features and views over St Paul's.
4. Dining Experience
While The Rookery does not have a full-service restaurant, its breakfast experience is consistently highlighted as a standout. Guests can enjoy a "fantastic" and "generous" breakfast, served either in the elegant conservatory or delivered to the privacy of their room at no extra charge. Options often include freshly baked croissants, warm rolls, Danish pastries, granola, fresh fruit, smoked salmon, and hot drinks like perfect cappuccinos. Many consider it "one of the best breakfasts" they've had in a London hotel.
For other meals, a limited 24-hour room service menu is available, offering items from soups and baguettes to risotto and ravioli. However, the hotel's prime location in Clerkenwell means guests are "spoilt for choice" with an abundance of excellent restaurants, cafes, and pubs within walking distance.
5. Service & Staff
The staff at The Rookery receives glowing reviews for their exceptional hospitality. They are consistently described as "extremely friendly and helpful," "attentive," and "kind." Guests appreciate their "competent but laid-back" approach, ensuring needs are met without being overeager. Many reviewers highlight individual staff members for going the extra mile, whether sorting out reservations or arranging special requests like champagne and flowers. The "homely atmosphere" created by the staff is a significant part of the hotel's appeal.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Rookery boasts an "unbeatable" and "excellent" location in the fashionable Clerkenwell/Farringdon area. It's conveniently situated just a 1-2 minute walk from Farringdon Railway and Tube Station, offering easy access to the rest of London. Barbican Tube Station is also only a 5-minute walk away.
The neighborhood itself is described as "hip," "lively," and a major "foodie district" with numerous cafes, restaurants, and bars. Nearby attractions include Smithfield Market (a 1-minute walk), St. Paul's Cathedral (half a mile or 11 minutes' walk), the Museum of London, and the Barbican Centre. The area is quiet, particularly on weekdays, providing a peaceful escape from the city's hustle.
7. Value & Pricing
While considered a luxury boutique hotel, guests generally find The Rookery to offer "exceptional value for money," especially given its unique character and prime London location. Typical prices for a room can range from approximately $249 to $351, though this can vary. Reviewers suggest that it's "worth the cost" for those seeking a distinct and high-quality experience.
8. Common Complaints
Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring minor criticisms have been noted by guests:
- Lack of Showers in Some Rooms: Several guests mentioned that some bathrooms feature only a roll-top bath with a shower attachment, rather than a dedicated shower, which can make showering inconvenient and lead to water on the floor.
- No Kettle in Rooms: Some guests expressed a desire for a kettle in their rooms to make hot drinks at their convenience.
- Room Size (Minor): While generally considered spacious, a few travelers found some rooms "a bit snug" or noted that the antique furnishings might be less comfortable than modern alternatives for some.
- Accessibility: Due to the historic nature of the building, there are stairs and no elevator, which may be a consideration for guests with mobility issues. The height of some antique beds was also noted as potentially challenging for shorter individuals.
- Ground Floor Room Security (Historic Review): One older review mentioned a slight feeling of insecurity with a basic lock on a ground floor room, though this is not a widespread current complaint.
In conclusion, The Rookery stands out as a "very special" Michelin Key Selected property, offering a captivating blend of historical charm, luxurious comfort, and impeccable service in a vibrant London neighborhood. It's particularly recommended for those who appreciate unique boutique experiences and a touch of old-world elegance.

An absolutely fantastic and historic hotel, situated in a wonderful part of London. It was a real pleasure to spend time in the room – especially relaxing in the bath – as well as enjoying the inviting public areas downstairs, such as the library, sitting room, and conservatory. While it isn’t the cheapest option, it’s well worth considering for a special occasion – you certainly won’t be disappoi...

I stayed at the rookery last month and was very disappointed. Many people are likely reading this contemplating if they want to stay here, the main appeal being the beautiful design of the hotel and it is indeed beautiful. Called for a reservation today, and had to cancel an hour later due to an asthma attack and had to go to the hospital instead. A particularly rude receptionist began arguing with my husband on the phone, refusing to cancel the booking unless he paid when my partner hadn’t made a booking or paid deposit, simply asked them to reserve, so it was still available to the public, quote from the reception...

Very charming and quiet little hotel. My room was beautiful and very clean. The bathroom was a little bit quirky but it’s adds to the charm of the place. Very good breakfast. I really want to go back!

EDIT: The hotel has subsequently offered us a partial refund, which has done a lot to absolve some of the hurt outlined in the review below. Last weekend we stayed at this hotel for our wedding. To begin with, we were absolutely blown away by the hotel -- the welcome and service, the decor of the building and of our room, the breakfast and the location were all second to none. We loved it so much...

Guy who checked us in was very unfriendly. Not sure if it was a night manager (night managers are usually night managers for a reason!) Short guy with glasses. So very glum Anywho. We went straight to bed. Bed spread and pillows smelled musty, bed was lumpy and we were kept awake by drunk folk, lorries and general street noise. Room smelled of damp. Then we were woken again in the early morning b...
