Expert Review: Hôtel Dieu Intercontinental Marseille
Hôtel Dieu Intercontinental Marseille: A Luxurious Haven with Historic Charm
The Hôtel Dieu Intercontinental Marseille stands as a distinguished five-star property, celebrated for its blend of 18th-century grandeur and chic, modern interiors. Housed in a former hospital dating back to the 12th century and inaugurated by Napoleon III in 1866, this Michelin Key Selected hotel offers a truly luxurious experience in the heart of Marseille.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus among guests is overwhelmingly positive, describing the hotel as luxurious, fantastic, and exceptional. Many guests express that their stay was truly enjoyable, with some stating they "didn't have to leave or even want to leave!" due to the complete and relaxing experience offered. It is widely considered one of Marseille's most luxurious hotels.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise several aspects of the Hôtel Dieu Intercontinental Marseille:
- Location: Its prime position atop Panier Hill offers breathtaking views of the Vieux Port and the Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica. It's also conveniently located for exploring the city's oldest neighborhood, Le Panier.
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel beautifully marries its historic French Baroque facade with contemporary decor, influenced by Art Deco and Marseille's seafaring culture. The interiors are described as polished, with a sophisticated warmth, creating a "chilled out luxury" vibe.
- Amenities: Standout features include a Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant, a brasserie with a spectacular terrace, a Clarins spa, and an indoor pool. Free and fast Wi-Fi is also a consistent highlight.
- Service: The staff is frequently described as friendly, attentive, professional, and helpful, contributing significantly to the luxurious experience.
3. Room Quality
The 194 rooms are consistently described as spacious and elegant. They feature a cool, gray palette with subtle nods to Provencal tradition and boast contemporary decor. Amenities typically include minibars, espresso machines, and digital music players. Many rooms and suites offer impressive views, with some facing the landmark Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde Basilica or the Vieux Port. While generally comfortable and quiet (especially rooms facing the courtyard), some guests have noted minor issues such as pillows being too flat or a reading light being broken. Rooms without a harbor view are considered less impressive. Balconies are often spacious enough to host several adults and offer stunning views, enhancing the room experience considerably.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel offers several dining options that receive positive feedback:
- Alcyone: This is the Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant, offering Mediterranean cuisine.
- Les Fenêtres: This brasserie provides Mediterranean fare with distinctive details, available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The outdoor terrace of Les Fenêtres is particularly popular, offering superb views and is bustling with both locals and visitors.
- Breakfast: Available à la carte or buffet-style, breakfast generally receives positive reviews for both the food quality and the stunning view from the terrace where it's served. The buffet is noted for fresh fruit, a variety of breads and cheeses, and made-to-order dishes like omelets and waffles. However, it can be pricey, and some guests have experienced long waits for a table. In-room breakfast is also an option, with some guests praising the silky smooth scrambled eggs and delicious pastries.
5. Service & Staff
The staff at Hôtel Dieu Intercontinental Marseille is frequently highlighted for its professionalism, attentiveness, and friendly demeanor. Guests often experience a "white glove" service, where attention is paid to small details. Multilingual staff are welcoming and helpful, assisting with things like printing documents and providing tailored restaurant recommendations. While service is generally excellent, a few isolated incidents have been reported, such as a missed wake-up call or initial restaurant recommendations not being impressive. Some recent reviews also mention that while staff do their best, there might not be enough of them, leading to issues like waiting for breakfast tables.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel's location on Panier Hill is a significant advantage, providing excellent views of Marseille. It's just minutes from the Old Port of Marseille (Vieux Port), which is about a 10-minute walk away. The charming Old Town, Le Panier, with its cafes, shops, and historic sights like Centre de la Vieille Charité, is also within easy walking distance. The nearest bus station, Place Bargemon, is about a minute's walk, and the Vieux Port metro station is a seven-minute walk, offering good connectivity to other parts of the city, although the metro's coverage is somewhat limited. The Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde is about a 10-minute drive or 25 minutes by public transport. Pedestrian access to the hotel itself has been noted as a minor inconvenience by some.
7. Value & Pricing
Hôtel Dieu Intercontinental Marseille is considered a pricey hotel, but many guests believe it is worth the cost due to its luxurious offerings and exceptional experience. Room rates can start from approximately €233 for a room-only basis. Breakfast, if not included in the booking, can be an expensive addition. Some reports also indicate potential hidden fees, such as access to the spa. Despite the cost, many guests feel the value aligns with the high quality and overall luxury provided.
8. Common Complaints
While largely positive, some recurring criticisms include:
- Breakfast experience: The breakfast, despite being highly rated for food and views, is often cited as overpriced. Additionally, guests have reported significant waiting times (up to 20 minutes) for a table, suggesting the breakfast room may be too small for the hotel's capacity.
- Room discrepancies: Rooms without a harbor view are considered less impressive. There have also been isolated reports of "king-size" beds being two twin beds pushed together with differing mattress firmness.
- Minor service lapses: While generally excellent, a few guests have noted issues such as missed wake-up calls, initial unhelpful concierge recommendations, or discrepancies in room charges at check-in.
- Spa access: Some guests have mentioned an extra charge for spa access and inconvenient policies, such as needing to walk outdoors in robes to reach the spa during colder months.
- Lack of water in rooms: A surprising oversight for a 5-star hotel, some guests have reported no complimentary water in the rooms, requiring them to ask at reception.

Our first time at an Intercontinental was good, but that’s it. For a 5* Hotel (which we booked plenty around the world), the Hotel definitely could use a renovation of the rooms. Especially the Junior Suite is still very dark, minimal furnished and at the price point a little disappointing. We have stayed at another 5* Hotel in town and would go back to that Hotel, since it was half the price, bu...

A bit disappointed by the quality of the hotel. I often stay with IHG and appreciate to their high standard. However, this hotel looks outdated and needs a refresh. Also, the two rooms I was offered were very dark and poorly situated (located at the ends of the hallways), so perhaps these were not their rooms in the best conditions.

Stayed here at the end of our honeymoon, and it was simply amazing! The room was spacious and very comfortable, the food was delicious, and all of the employees were very friendly and helpful. We had lunch in the restaurant and our server, Martin, was excellent and gave us a few good recommendations for places to go around the city. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it!

We enjoyed a very nice room with a large beautiful balcony with a fabulous view. The hotel is impressive, yet it fails on many levels for a 5-Star facility. For example, breakfasts are not only inadequate, but almost inedible, watery scrambled eggs, a bucket of greasy partially bacon, empty baskets of pastries that ran out every morning for three days, getting a cup of coffee every morning was a ...

The hotel property is very nice, very historic and well designed. An oasis in the city center (which does not actually feel very safe). But the housekeeping service is very unprofessional and careless: kept on entering my room without knocking and despite my having asked them not to come in. They also took away my room key card while I wasn’t in the room! The towels they gave me were gray and blac...
