Expert Review: InterContinental Grand Hôtel Bordeaux

The InterContinental Grand Hôtel Bordeaux stands as a beacon of luxury and historical grandeur in the heart of Bordeaux, earning its "Michelin Key Selected" status through a combination of impeccable service, stunning design, and exceptional amenities.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for the InterContinental Grand Hôtel Bordeaux is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "gem," "exceptional," "wonderful," and "regal" destination. Ratings often range from 8.9 to a remarkable 9.6 out of 10, reflecting a consistently high level of guest satisfaction.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several aspects of the hotel:

  • Service: The staff is frequently lauded for being attentive, friendly, professional, efficient, and genuinely focused on guest needs, providing outstanding and personalized service. The "Golden Keys" concierge team is considered among the best in Bordeaux.
  • Location: The hotel boasts a prime, ideal, and central location on the Place de la Comédie, directly opposite the iconic Grand Théâtre. It offers effortless access to major attractions, shopping on Rue Sainte Catherine, Place de la Bourse, and public transport like tram stops for easy exploration of the city and beyond, including Bordeaux St Jean Train Station and the Cité du Vin.
  • Design: Renovated by renowned Parisian designer Jacques Garcia, the hotel's interiors exude opulence, elegance, and a sumptuous, refined 19th-century style. The Roman bath-inspired Spa Nuxe Les Bains de Léa is a particular highlight for its decadent design.
  • Amenities: The hotel offers an impressive array of amenities, including a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, a brasserie, a chic rooftop bar with panoramic city views (Night Beach), and the extensive Spa Nuxe Les Bains de Léa, which features an indoor pool, sauna, hammam, and tearoom.

3. Room Quality

The rooms and suites at the InterContinental Grand Hôtel Bordeaux are described as elegant and refined, adorned with 19th-century style furnishings, rich fabrics, and marble bathrooms. Many rooms offer captivating views of the Opera House or the Garonne river. However, it's noted that entry-level Superior rooms can be somewhat small (around 27 sqm), which is not uncommon for European hotels. Some bathrooms may also lack modern conveniences such as dual sinks and rain showers. Due to the hotel's heritage, being an amalgamation of several 18th-century buildings, the internal hallways can be labyrinthine, and some corridors include small staircases.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel offers a diverse and high-quality dining landscape:

  • Le Pressoir d'Argent Gordon Ramsay: This two-Michelin-starred restaurant is a significant draw, celebrated for its exceptional food and service. Its signature blue lobster dish, theatrically presented with a solid silver Christofle lobster press, is a memorable highlight.
  • Le Bordeaux Restaurant: Situated on the ground floor, this brasserie offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. While previously associated with Gordon Ramsay, he reportedly left this establishment in 2020. Breakfast is a well-regarded buffet with live cooking stations, though some guests have noted a desire for more healthy options. Recent reviews suggest that while desserts remain excellent, the quality of main courses may have become more inconsistent since the change.
  • L'Orangerie (Winter Bar): This venue provides cocktails, light meals, and a perfume-inspired afternoon tea.
  • Night Beach (Rooftop Lounge): A chic rooftop bar offering stunning 360-degree views of Bordeaux, it's a popular spot for evening drinks and also serves lunch during the day.

5. Service & Staff

The service at InterContinental Grand Hôtel Bordeaux consistently receives high praise, being described as outstanding, attentive, friendly, professional, and efficient. Staff members are noted for their warmth, genuine hospitality, and willingness to go above and beyond, from efficient check-in/out to helpful recommendations and assistance with travel arrangements. The concierge team, particularly those holding "Golden Keys" awards, is highly regarded for their knowledge and helpfulness.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is a major asset. It is situated on the vibrant Place de la Comédie, directly opposite the magnificent Grand Théâtre, placing guests in the heart of Bordeaux's historic "golden triangle". Key attractions such as Rue Sainte Catherine and Place de la Bourse are within a short walking distance, with most major monuments reachable within 15 minutes. Two nearby tram stops provide convenient access to the Bordeaux St Jean Train Station and other areas like the Cité du Vin. This central position allows guests to easily immerse themselves in the city's bustling energy while having a tranquil retreat to return to.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury 5-star property and a Michelin Key Selected hotel, the InterContinental Grand Hôtel Bordeaux commands premium pricing. The average price per room is around $498, significantly higher than the city's average of $170, reflecting the exclusive experience offered. Deluxe rooms can be around 441 euros (approximately $517). While not inexpensive, many guests feel the exceptional location, facilities, and service justify the cost, considering it an "unbeatable price" for the luxury provided. Spa treatments, however, are noted to be expensive.

8. Common Complaints

While generally very positive, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Wi-Fi Issues: Some older reviews mention frustratingly unreliable or non-functional Wi-Fi, despite being offered for free.
  • Room Size/Bathroom Features: The entry-level Superior rooms are sometimes considered small, and a few guests have pointed out the absence of modern bathroom amenities like dual sinks or rain showers.
  • Spa Access Fees: A point of contention for some loyalty program members is the requirement to pay for access to the relaxation pool and sauna, even when on programs like IHG Ambassador or FHR.
  • Hotel Layout: Given its origins as several 18th-century buildings, the hotel's interior hallways can be intricate with varying levels and small staircases, which might pose a challenge for guests with mobility issues.
  • Breakfast Healthy Options: While breakfast quality is generally good, some guests have noted a relatively classic spread with a perceived lack of healthy choices.
  • Le Bordeaux Dining Consistency: Post-Gordon Ramsay's departure from Le Bordeaux in 2020, some reviews indicate that the main courses might have become less consistent, although desserts continue to be highly rated.

An excellent hotel in every sense — from the prime location to the quality of the food and the outstanding service. The location is ideal and makes getting around effortless, while the dining exceeded expectations throughout our stay. George was especially helpful and went out of his way to ensure everything ran smoothly for us. In fact, all of the staff were attentive, friendly, and genuinely fo...

The location was perfect, it was close to everything. The hotel was busy, but efficient, and the staff truly stood out. I wasn’t feeling well during my stay, and the person delivering my food went out of their way to make an extra trip just to bring me a special tea. That level of care meant a lot. Overall, a wonderful experience.

I stayed for two nights at the InterContinental Bordeaux. We were allocated a small, dark room with no view to speak of. It was mostly quiet, although we were woken early each morning by lorries driving down the side road. Although this was a small room, a lot of furniture had been packed into it - there were three chairs and two tables. I banged my knee a couple of times, trying to get past the b...

We were allocated a beautiful suite with direct view of the Opera House, along with some delicious we...

Maybe the best hotel experience I've ever had! The Intercontinental Bordeaux is a historic and beautiful hotel in the very center of town. We were greeted by the most helpful and cheerful staff you could imagine that made the check in process so easy and enjoyable. The service was wonderful from the start. We are celebrating our honeymoon and they truly went above and beyond to make it special. Josephine at the front desk was fantastic. I write this before even our first night stay. Excited to see what is next.
