Expert Review: Hotel Das Weitzer

Hotel Das Weitzer in Graz, Austria, a Michelin Key Selected property, is highly regarded for its prime central location, excellent service, and comprehensive amenities, offering a blend of historic charm and contemporary comfort.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Hotel Das Weitzer consistently receives a "Very Good" overall rating, averaging around 8.5 out of 10 based on over 5,400 reviews. Guests frequently express high satisfaction, describing it as a "great hotel" and "definitely worth it," particularly for first-time visitors to Graz.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of Hotel Das Weitzer:

  • Location: Its central position directly by the Mur river and within walking distance of major attractions is a standout feature.
  • Service & Staff: The friendly, helpful, and courteous staff often receive praise for their discreet and precise service.
  • Dining: The breakfast buffet is a significant highlight, with some guests even calling it "the best breakfast buffet all over the world."
  • Amenities: The hotel offers appealing amenities, including a rooftop sauna with 360-degree panoramic views and a well-equipped fitness area. An on-site florist, Blumeninsel, also adds a unique touch, ensuring the hotel is always supplied with fresh blooms.

3. Room Quality

Hotel Das Weitzer offers 204 rooms across seven categories, ranging from "Economy rooms with a sleek design to the luxurious Suite with an exceptional view." Generally, rooms are described as big, clean, and comfortable. They come equipped with free WiFi, flat-screen TVs, and air conditioning. While the hotel retains its century-old architecture, the interiors blend parquet floors and ornate mirror frames with modern furniture, creating a minimalist yet tactilely comfortable environment. Guests recommend asking for a river view for an enhanced Graz experience. However, some guests note that more affordable basic rooms can be "simple and functional rather than chic and fancy," and some furniture in older rooms might appear "quite old" and in need of renovation.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Hotel Das Weitzer is a strong point. The extensive breakfast buffet, served in the cozy Engelreich breakfast room, is highly praised for its wide selection of sweet and savory items. For other meals, "Der Steirer" restaurant offers a modern interpretation of classic Styrian cuisine, accompanied by an extensive wine list from its vinotheque. Additionally, "Kaffee Weitzer" provides a classic Austrian coffee house experience, serving homemade pastries and coffee, and accommodating late risers with all-day breakfast options.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Hotel Das Weitzer consistently receives positive feedback. Guests describe them as "very friendly and courteous," "helpful," and "discrete and precise" at the reception. Housekeeping staff are also noted for their friendliness.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is arguably one of its greatest assets. Situated in the heart of Graz, directly on the banks of the Mur river, it offers exceptional accessibility. It's just a short walk from significant attractions such as Kunsthaus Graz, the main square (Hauptplatz), Schlossberg, and Murinsel. Public transport, including a tram stop, is conveniently located just two minutes away, facilitating easy exploration of the city and access to the train station. The hotel is also only 9.3 miles from Graz Airport and the A2 motorway.

7. Value & Pricing

Hotel Das Weitzer is generally considered to offer good value for money, especially given its excellent central location and amenities. Basic rooms are noted for being "very affordable." Room prices can vary, with some rates observed between $124 and $217 USD, or C$ 99 and C$ 248. However, guests should be aware that the underground parking facility is frequently cited as "extremely pricey," costing approximately €31.50 per 24 hours.

8. Common Complaints

While generally well-received, some recurring issues and criticisms include:

  • Room Condition (Basic Rooms): Some guests found the more affordable rooms to be "simple and functional" rather than luxurious or stylish, with older furnishings in some instances.
  • Noise: One review highlighted a concern about "non-existent sound insulation" between neighboring rooms, which could be an issue for light sleepers.
  • Parking Costs: The "extremely pricey" underground parking is a common point of contention.
  • Bathroom/Shower: Some guests reported that bathrooms, particularly showers, could be narrow or require constant temperature adjustments.
  • Bar Availability: One guest noted that the hotel's bar "seems to be always closed."
  • Sauna Access: The rooftop sauna is only accessible in the afternoons and evenings, not in the mornings.
  • Limited Vegan Options: A specific criticism mentioned limited vegan-friendly dishes at the on-site café and restaurant.

Our room was absolutely fine but overlooked the central well. Boring. However, the place itself is right on the river but rooms with that view are premium price I'd guess. It's very much a business hotel with that kind of feel; however, all staff were very efficient and most helpful. The bar area itself is pleasant but can be populated in the evening by younger business guests unwinding and having...

Overall a good hotel to stay for the night and enjoy the town. Rooms and passage areas are somewhat outdated, but everything was functioning well. Staff helped us a lot with some special requests (mostly due to traveling with a baby). Breakfast was quite good, though the room was quite crowded and very hot! (I'm guessing due to ventilation difficulties.) Entrance and lobby area do indeed look as g...

Overall a good hotel. Centrally located, close to tram and bus lines, and it was easy to get to and from the train station, and easy walk to the heart of Graz. A number of restaurants and coffee shops nearby. Three things that could be improved on: first, the WiFi was very average for 2025 standards. It worked but using Google Maps on my computer to look up places was very challenging., Video cal...

Stayed a couple of days for business. Location is great and breakfast wonderful. Rooms otherwise good, but temperature was way too hot and no way to cool the room without opening the window. Also no coffeemaker in the room.
