Expert Review: Four Seasons Resort Hualalai

The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, a Michelin Key Two-Keys property on the Island of Hawaii, is consistently lauded as a pinnacle of luxury and one of the finest resorts globally, offering an extraordinary Hawaiian experience. Following an extensive $100 million renovation completed in Fall 2021, the resort maintains a stunning, contemporary ambiance.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "incredible," "breathtakingly beautiful," and "magical." It's often highlighted as one of the best Four Seasons properties and a top choice for luxury travelers, especially families. The Michelin Two-Keys designation further affirms its excellence in architecture, interior design, service, and overall character, reflecting its deep connection to Hawaiian culture.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several standout features:

  • Unique Design & Setting: The resort's low-rise, open-air architecture seamlessly blends with the dramatic black lava landscapes, white-sand beaches, and lush tropical foliage, creating a serene and uncrowded atmosphere.
  • Exceptional Pools & Water Features: Eight distinct pools cater to various preferences, including the adults-only Palm Grove pool and the Beach Tree "quiet pool." A major highlight is King's Pond, a 1.8-million-gallon natural, swimmable aquarium carved from lava rock, home to over 1,000 tropical fish and a resident eagle ray, with on-site marine biologists offering educational programs.
  • World-Class Amenities: The resort boasts a Jack Nicklaus championship golf course, a 28,000-square-foot Hawaiian-inspired spa with indoor and outdoor treatment areas, a large fitness center with classes, tennis and pickleball courts, and a robust marine biology center.
  • Cultural Immersion: Through the Ka'upulehu Cultural Center and various programs, the resort offers an immersive journey into Hawaiian history, traditions, and local ingredients.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations, extensively renovated in 2020/2021, exude a casual tropical luxury vibe. Standard rooms are spacious, at 635 square feet, and provide flexibility for families with surprisingly comfortable sleeper couches. Rooms are arranged in low-lying, crescent-shaped bungalows, giving the feeling of staying in boutique hotels within a larger resort and ensuring privacy. Many rooms feature large terraces or balconies with comfortable furniture, 75-inch TVs, Nespresso coffee makers, and, in some cases, cherished outdoor showers surrounded by jungle plants. Oceanfront rooms, especially in the King's Pond crescent, offer the best views.

4. Dining Experience

The resort features a variety of dining options across its four to six restaurants and lounges, emphasizing fresh island flavors and local ingredients.

  • Breakfast: Often cited as a highlight, with lavish buffets available at 'ULU Ocean Grill and Beach Tree, offering made-to-order omelets, fresh fruits, and pastries.
  • 'ULU Ocean Grill: Offers refined, Asian-inspired menus for breakfast and dinner.
  • Beach Tree: A popular spot for both breakfast and dinner, featuring Californian cuisine with an Italian twist, often accompanied by live music and stunning sunset views.
  • Miller & Lux: A newer addition, this American steakhouse by Chef Tyler Florence offers high-quality steaks, a raw bar, and sustainable seafood in an intimate setting overlooking the golf course.
  • Hualalai Trading Company: Provides casual dining, including breakfast and lunch items, coffee, and a nostalgic soda bar. While the quality of food is generally high and ingredients are fresh, some guests have noted a desire for more inventiveness in certain dishes.

5. Service & Staff

The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is renowned for its exceptional and personalized service, consistently described as warm, friendly, responsive, gracious, helpful, and caring. The staff is praised for embodying the "spirit of aloha" and often addressing guests by name, creating a truly welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. Examples of staff going "out of their way to accommodate" guests are frequently shared.

6. Location & Accessibility

The resort is ideally situated on a half-mile stretch of beach along the Kona Coast of the Big Island, known as the driest part of the island. Its proximity to Kona International Airport (KOA), just a 13 to 15-minute drive (7 miles), makes it easily accessible. While the resort itself offers a vast array of activities, renting a car is often recommended for guests who wish to explore the diverse attractions of the Big Island, such as the Kilauea volcano or other natural wonders.

7. Value & Pricing

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is undeniably a luxury property, with prices typically starting around $1,162 to $1,201 per night, and an average room price of approximately $1,626. Despite the high cost, many guests consider it an exceptional value for the discerning traveler, given the unparalleled opulence, world-class amenities, and consistently superior service. Booking through programs like American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts or Four Seasons Preferred Partner can offer valuable perks such as daily breakfast for two, room upgrades subject to availability, resort credits, and flexible check-in/out times, enhancing the overall value.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor and recurring criticisms have been noted:

  • Food Inventiveness: A few guests expressed that while the food quality was never lacking, some offerings could be more inventive or "wow-worthy."
  • Birds at Breakfast: A specific complaint involved birds at the outdoor Beach Tree breakfast buffet, with some guests finding it unsanitary.
  • Service Delays: Minor inconveniences due to occasional service delays have been reported by a few guests.
  • Room Lighting: A very specific, minor complaint mentioned closet lights automatically turning on when doors were opened, which could be disruptive at night.

The Four Seasons Hualālai is truly exceptional. From the moment you arrive, everything feels elevated, peaceful, and beautifully curated. The resort itself is stunning — lush gardens, ocean views, and a layout that makes it feel both expansive and intimate at the same time. From the moment we got off the plane to the moment we left it was such a 5 star experience. I am writing this review a bit late. We went in May 2025 with my husband and my 9 month old at the time. The restaurants they have there are superb. The rooms were very clean and had a beautiful outdoor shower. The service was great anything we asked for they provided and came right away. It was so amazing ...

The property itself is beautiful and very spread out. Incredible stargazing right at the resort. Rooms are ok- somewhat dated in my opinion. Self service laundry and Dyson hair dryer were a nice touch. Food was great. All staff were very friendly and kind, however the concierge was of the worst we’ve experienced at any five star hotel (we’ve stayed at many around the world). King’s Pond was a real...

We had brunch and stayed playing at the beach for the day and then had dinner there as well. It’s a five star hotel. The beach is beautiful and you can snorkel and see fishes. No complaints. I would come back and stay there on my next vacation.

Superb in every respect! Closest major hotel to the airport, only 15 minutes away but utterly secluded on extensive manicured grounds. Wonderful long beachfront with sea turtles and snorkeling. Though the ocean was a bit rough for our stay, there is a large saltwater pond just inside the beach, stocked with 1,000 fish of all types (though no sea turtles), where even little kids can swim and snork...

Came here for our honeymoon and had an unforgettable experience. Grounds were immaculate and their kings pond and fishing derby were super memorable. Morning dining had views of the water buffet style just as the tides receded from peak level was relaxing to observe. Highly recommend and worth it.
