Expert Review: Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero

Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero: A Two-Key Michelin Experience with Breathtaking Views

The Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero, a prestigious Two-Key Michelin property, consistently earns high praise for its unparalleled panoramic views, exceptional service, and sophisticated design. Situated on the top 11 floors of a 48-story building, it stands as the tallest hotel in San Francisco, offering a truly elevated stay.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for the Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests describing their stay as "perfect" and "flawless luxury." The hotel is widely regarded as one of San Francisco's best, particularly for its breathtaking views and friendly service. While some guests express mixed feelings about the value for money concerning the on-site restaurant and certain amenities, the overall sentiment highlights an "exceptional stay." The Michelin Two-Keys designation further underscores its standing as a truly outstanding hotel.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about the stunning panoramic views of the city skyline, the Bay, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Transamerica Pyramid, especially from higher floors and corner suites. The impeccable and attentive service provided by the warm and friendly staff is another frequently celebrated highlight. The hotel's modern and elegant design, coupled with clean and comfortable rooms, also contributes to its appeal. Its prime location in the Embarcadero district, offering excellent accessibility to major attractions, is also a significant draw.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Four Seasons Embarcadero are described as elegant, sophisticated, and phenomenally comfortable. They feature plush king beds, sleek furniture, and panoramic windows that maximize the incredible views. A 2022 remodel introduced gorgeous brand-new bathrooms with white marble and silver finishes. Many bathrooms include both a standing shower and a separate deep-soaking tub, often positioned to offer views. Thoughtful touches such as Nespresso coffee machines, Harney & Sons teabags, Bose portable speakers, and San Francisco postcards are appreciated by guests. While generally praised, some guests noted a lack of bathtubs in certain rooms or a desire for more furniture, and in some renovated rooms, curtains and blinds were manual rather than electric.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's onsite restaurant, Orafo (meaning "goldsmith" in Italian), specializes in California-Italian cuisine, featuring handmade pasta and seasonal seafood. Breakfast at Orafo is often hailed as the "breakfast of dreams," offering indulgent dishes like Tiramisu French toast and Uova al Purgatorio, alongside perfectly prepared American classics. Dinner options, such as grilled octopus, wild mushroom pappardelle, and porchetta, receive good feedback, and the cocktails are described as superb. However, some guests have found the dinner atmosphere to be a little quiet and expressed dissatisfaction with the overall value for the restaurant's price. Room service, offering delicious items like cheeseburgers, prosciutto flatbread, and pesto pasta, is consistently prompt and well-received. Complimentary warm chai near the elevators is a nice touch.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Four Seasons Embarcadero is consistently described as "faultless," with staff noted for being warm, friendly, attentive, helpful, and professional. Guests frequently highlight the staff's dedication to creating a positive experience, including offering room upgrades, providing excellent city recommendations, and assisting with day trips. Rooms are serviced twice daily, further reflecting the hotel's commitment to high standards of hospitality.

6. Location & Accessibility

Located in the city's Embarcadero district, the hotel is situated on the top floors of the 345 California Center, providing it with its famous elevated views. The area is described as a great location for both business and leisure travelers, offering excellent walkability. Popular attractions such as the Ferry Building, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Chinatown, North Beach, Jackson Square, and Pier 39 are all within a short distance. The hotel is also conveniently located a few blocks from BART, providing good transport links. The neighborhood is generally considered safe.

7. Value & Pricing

The Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero is considered a luxury property with pricing to match. Nightly rates can vary significantly, with advance bookings sometimes found around $420, but closer to the stay, rates can range from $600. Average weeknight prices have been reported around $688, and weekend nights around $551. February is generally the cheapest month to stay, while July tends to be the most expensive. While it is an expensive option, many guests feel the exceptional views and high level of service justify the cost.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring criticisms include dissatisfaction with the value for the price, particularly regarding the hotel's restaurant for dinner and certain amenities. Some guests have noted the absence of a pool or spa, which might be a consideration for those expecting a full-service resort experience. Minor issues like occasional piping noise or long waits for elevators have been mentioned. While bathrooms are generally praised, a few guests noted the lack of double sinks or partitioned toilets in some instances. Parking costs at the hotel are also considered expensive by some visitors.

We stayed here over a busy weekend and spent most evenings relaxing in our room. We ordered room service for wine and some food, and everything was great. The food was delicious and the service was pretty good. Our room had a distant view of the Golden Gate Bridge, which made the stay feel extra special. The price is a bit high during weekends, but it’s definitely worth it.

After Marriot Marquis really dropped the ball I found this place and I will not be returning to Marriot after seeing first hand how much more incredible Four Seasons is in every way. The staff were genuinely interested in my goal for a weekend getaway, and I mean from the first person I spoke to on the phone, to the gentleman who helped us with our luggage. The helped me orchestrate an unbelieva...

My husband and I had an amazing two-night stay at the Four Seasons Embarcadero in San Francisco. We booked one night through Amex Platinum and the second through Chase Luxury Travel, which both offered various benefits for doing so. When we arrived, Sequoia did a great job handling check-in—and informed us that we had been upgraded from a city view to a bay view room, one of the aforementioned ben...

Service is the best part of this hotel. Probably the only hotel in SF where you can get such attentive service. Every one of the staff members were extremely friendly. Rooms are alright, not as modern as other FS hotels, and it shows that this was not built as a FS. Can get noisy on the top floor from roof noise. Location is also alright, convenient for business and walkable to some destinations b...
