Expert Review: Esthéréa

Esthéréa, a Michelin Key Selected property in Amsterdam, Netherlands, consistently receives outstanding praise for its unique charm, exceptional service, and prime location. Housed in a row of picturesque 17th-century buildings along the historic Singel canal, this family-run boutique hotel offers a distinctive and luxurious experience.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

Esthéréa garners an impressive overall guest rating of 9.3, indicating widespread satisfaction. Guests frequently describe their stay as an "exceptional experience" and laud the hotel for being "charming," "beautiful," and "delightfully quirky". It's often recommended as a "true gem" in Amsterdam, with many guests expressing a desire to return.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several aspects that make Esthéréa stand out:

  • Service & Hospitality: The staff is frequently praised as excellent, friendly, helpful, and accommodating, offering engaging and hands-on service without being intrusive. The hotel maintains a personal touch, making guests feel at home.
  • Location: Situated in the very heart of Amsterdam, on the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Singel canal, the hotel boasts a central yet quiet location. It's an ideal base for exploring the city, with numerous major attractions within easy walking distance.
  • Design & Ambiance: The interior design is a significant draw, characterized by its lavish, richly colored, and eclectic style. Guests are captivated by the classical decor, crystal chandeliers, luxurious fabrics, mahogany paneling, and expressive prints, creating an ambiance that feels like stepping into a period drama. Each of the 91 rooms and two suites is uniquely designed.
  • Amenities: Complimentary coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and snacks (cookies, chocolates) are available all day in the lobby/lounge, a much-appreciated perk. The hotel also features a 24/7 bar, a refined library, a small but well-equipped gym, loaner iPads, and bikes for rent. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.

Room Quality

The rooms at Esthéréa are consistently described as beautiful, uniquely decorated, stylish, charming, clean, and comfortable, providing a tranquil retreat. They are meticulously designed, blending modern amenities with traditional Dutch accents, featuring plush bedding, elegant furnishings, and often a spacious layout. Many rooms offer an elegant touch from the building's period, with some even boasting crystal chandeliers, four-poster beds, or stunning canal views.

All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a television, a mini-fridge, a safe, and spacious bathrooms with designer L'Occitane toiletries. Room types range from cozy single rooms (at least 13 square meters) to luxurious suites (30-55 square meters). While individual rooms are distinct, guests should be aware that sizes can vary considerably within the same category, and some classic rooms may feel tight. Some bathtubs are designed for one person, and beds might occasionally consist of two singles pushed together, though the staff is generally quick to address such concerns.

Dining Experience

Esthéréa is renowned for its delicious breakfast, often hailed as "one of the best in town". The breakfast buffet features a lavish spread with a wide range of choices, including smoothies, cakes, Mediterranean salads, various breads, toppings, juices, fresh fruit, and warm dishes like scrambled eggs, boiled or fried eggs, sausages, and bacon. It's worth noting that breakfast is typically an optional extra, costing approximately EUR 24.50 per person.

The hotel also serves light meals. Maria's Bar, named after the hotel's founder, opens at 5 PM, offering a selection of great drinks, cocktails, and a small menu of locally-inspired bites such as Dutch cheese and bitterbals. However, the hotel does not operate a full-service restaurant for lunch and dinner beyond these bar snacks. Some guests have expressed a desire for more healthier dining options at the bar.

Service & Staff

The hospitality at Esthéréa is consistently rated as exceptional. Guests frequently highlight the staff as excellent, friendly, helpful, accommodating, and engaging. The hotel prides itself on providing a personalized and intimate stay, ensuring every guest feels welcomed and at home, a testament to its family-run ethos. Attentive service and a keen eye for detail are hallmarks of the Esthéréa team.

Location & Accessibility

Esthéréa enjoys a prime and highly advantageous location in the very heart of Amsterdam, nestled along the picturesque Singel canal, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This central position places guests within easy walking distance of many of the city's most iconic attractions:

  • Dam Square: 7 minutes walk
  • Anne Frank House: 10-11 minutes walk
  • The Nine Streets (shopping district): 3 minutes walk or a short distance
  • Major museums (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum): approximately 20 minutes walk
  • Leidseplein: around 15 minutes walk
  • Amsterdam Centraal Station: approximately 15 minutes away.

The hotel is also well-connected by public transport, with nearby bus, metro, and light rail lines. For those arriving by car, underground parking is available onsite for €55 per 24 hours, though it has specific size and weight restrictions and cannot accommodate electric or hybrid vehicles. A limousine pick-up service can also be arranged for a fee. Despite its central location, the hotel is situated in a quiet area, providing a peaceful retreat.

Value & Pricing

While Esthéréa is considered a luxury property with an average room price of around $444, which is higher than Amsterdam's city average of $223, guests generally agree that it offers "excellent value for money" and is "well worth the investment". Room rates typically range from €200 to €500 per night during the off-season or shoulder season, with suites being at the higher end. Prices can fluctuate, with January often being the cheapest month and November the most expensive. Guests are advised to look for deals as discounted rates can enhance the already good value. Additional costs include a city/local tax rate of 12.50% and a refundable damage deposit of €70 per room per night upon check-in.

Common Complaints

Despite overwhelming positive feedback, a few recurring criticisms have been noted:

  • Decor Preference: While largely appreciated, the hotel's "maximalist approach" to interior design might not appeal to everyone's taste.
  • Room Size Variation: Room sizes can differ significantly, even within the same category, with some classic rooms being described as quite tight.
  • Elevators and Stairs: The elevators in the historic 17th-century building can be "excruciatingly slow". The stairs, while charming, are noted as being incredibly steep and shallow, which may be challenging for some guests.
  • Breakfast Cost and Options: Although praised for its quality, breakfast is an optional extra that can be pricey. Some guests felt the hot options weren't as extensive as a full English breakfast, specifically noting a lack of hot toast.
  • Limited Dining Beyond Breakfast: The hotel does not have a full-service restaurant for lunch or dinner, offering only small bites and drinks at its bar.
  • Parking Restrictions: The underground car park has height and weight restrictions, and cannot accommodate electric or hybrid vehicles.
  • Tour Group Presence: The hotel can be popular with tour groups, which may occasionally lead to crowded lobby areas.

We stayed here for 5 nights during new years. The hotel was amazingly decorated for Christmas and new years, and everything was beautiful! The free sweets and cookies are a great bonus! The room (109) was small, but had everything we needed and the rooms are relatively quiet. There is plenty of space on the lobby for sitting down and reading or just enjoying the snow-fall view from the window. T...

truly exceeded all our expectations. From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed, relaxed, and taken care of. The hotel’s design is beautiful, warm, and full of character — every corner feels special. The staff were incredibly friendly and always willing to help with a smile. Check-in was smooth, and they made everything so easy for us. Our room was spotless, cozy, and very quiet, with one of ...

I was very upset when I arrived to a place that I was dreaming of to get to for such a long time. The hotel is gorgeous, the decor amazing, the room small but totally charming and a great bathroom ( not crazy about seeing my neighbor across the street the courtyard, so the drapes were close the whole time) but overall, small but beautifully decorated… a jewel box of a hotel. Why was I upset? The s...

Lovely, local, and well located. Standard rooms are quite small best if you are traveling solo, light on luggage, or get on really well with your partner. Otherwise book larger. Bathroom comfortable - for some the tub wall (no walk-in shower) could be a challenge at .5m/1.5 ft high. The “green area” is a lovely little patio (you will see into your neighbor’s room so probably best enjoyed clothed)....

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lovely & Memorable Stay! I stayed here for just one night with my wife, and it turned out to be such a lovely and unforgettable experience. As we entered through the main door, we couldn’t help but say “Wow... Wow!” The reception area and the interiors throughout the hotel were simply elegant and marvelous. One of the nicest touches is that you don’t need to prepare your own tea or coffee i...

What a find! Located in Signel, a canal near everything. Down from the Flower Canal area and around the corner from one of Amsterdams best dining and shopping areas. But ... it's decor is stellar. Over the top divine. Once you walk in it's like entering the movie set of Wizard and Tiffany wonder world. Then, the rooms are so well appointed and designed. Our suite was prefect for two. Fin...
