Expert Review: Thompson Chicago

Thompson Chicago: A Refined Stay in the Heart of Gold Coast

Thompson Chicago, a Michelin Key Selected property, generally receives high praise for its sophisticated design, prime location, and comfortable accommodations, making it a popular choice for both leisure and business travelers seeking a luxury boutique experience. Guest satisfaction ratings typically range from 8.6 to 9.1 out of 10.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overarching sentiment for Thompson Chicago is highly positive. Guests frequently commend its stylish atmosphere and exceptional location. It's often viewed as a solid luxury alternative, particularly within the Hyatt portfolio, offering good value for its category.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of Thompson Chicago:

  • Location: The hotel's position in the Gold Coast neighborhood is a standout feature, celebrated for its proximity to upscale dining, designer shopping, and attractions like the Magnificent Mile, Oak Street Beach, and Lake Michigan. It offers a quieter, more residential feel while remaining highly accessible to the city's vibrant energy.
  • Design: The interior design, by British designer Tara Bernerd, is described as chic, sophisticated, and mid-century modern with an urban industrial edge. Elements like warm American woods, rich textures of leather, velvet, and flannel, along with evocative art, contribute to a glamorous yet inviting ambiance. The lobby, with its loft-like feel and curated book collection, is a particular highlight.
  • Amenities: The hotel offers complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the property. There is a 24-hour fitness center equipped with Peloton machines, free weights, and treadmills, though some consider it fairly small for a hotel of its size. The hotel is also pet-friendly. Meeting and pre-function spaces total 6,000 square feet, suitable for various events. However, it does not have an on-site pool or spa.

Room Quality

The 247 rooms and suites at Thompson Chicago are generally described as spacious, well-appointed, and comfortable. Key features include 400-thread-count Sferra linens, rainfall showers, and mid-century modern furnishings. Many rooms boast stunning city or Lake Michigan views from floor-to-ceiling windows. Bathrooms are typically modern and spacious, often featuring white subway tiles, plush toiletries, and walk-in showers. Some premium suites, like the Skyline Loft Suite, are two-level with spiral staircases and balconies, offering unique layouts and city views. Minor criticisms occasionally include less-than-ideal lighting for makeup in some bathrooms and disproportionately small TV/refrigerator cabinets in some standard rooms. Rooms with two double beds may be tight for larger families.

Dining Experience

Thompson Chicago's dining scene has seen recent changes. Previously, it featured Nico Osteria, a highly regarded Italian seafood restaurant led by a James Beard award-winning chef. As of late 2024 and early 2025, the on-site restaurant is undergoing renovation to become a revamped Tavern on Rush, which is expected to focus more on brunch and room service. During renovations, food and beverage offerings have been limited, sometimes to in-room dining, occasionally delivered in disposable containers. Breakfast, when available, has been described as "fabulous," with options for in-restaurant or room service, though a lack of kid-friendly options has been noted by some guests. A grab-and-go venue is also available in the lobby. The hotel's Gold Coast location means numerous popular restaurants and bars are within easy walking distance.

Service & Staff

Guest feedback on service is generally positive, with staff described as friendly, helpful, and attentive. The concierge and reception typically provide necessary assistance. However, some guests have reported inconsistent experiences, such as a less-than-cheerful check-in process, a lack of proactive recognition for elite status, or initial difficulties resolving billing issues, including destination fees.

Location & Accessibility

The Thompson Chicago is ideally situated in the upscale Gold Coast neighborhood at 21 East Bellevue Place. This affluent area is renowned for its charming brownstones, designer boutiques (Celine, Dior, Hermes), and a wide array of high-end restaurants and entertainment venues. The hotel is just steps from the Magnificent Mile for shopping and a short walk to attractions like Oak Street Beach, Lake Michigan, Millennium Park, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Public transportation is easily accessible, with the CTA Red Line (Chicago/State station) about a ten-minute walk away, connecting guests to downtown and other parts of the city. O'Hare and Midway International Airports are approximately 40-60 minutes away by taxi or rideshare, and both are connected to downtown by CTA train lines.

Value & Pricing

Thompson Chicago is generally considered a good value, particularly for a luxury hotel in Chicago, especially for World of Hyatt members. It's a Category 4 or 5 Hyatt property, meaning it can be booked for 15,000-18,000 points per night for standard awards, making it an excellent use of Hyatt Free Night Certificates. Cash rates typically range from approximately $144 to $394 per night, though these can fluctuate significantly based on demand, season, and local events. While guests appreciate the overall value, valet parking is a "hefty" fee, often around $75 daily, with nearby self-parking options available as an alternative.

Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring criticisms and issues have been noted by guests:

  • Service Inconsistencies: Some guests have experienced a lack of recognition for Hyatt elite status or initial difficulties with billing, particularly regarding the removal of destination fees.
  • Dining Limitations: Ongoing restaurant renovations have led to limited dining options, sometimes confined to in-room dining with disposable cutlery, which detracts from the luxury experience. The breakfast menu has also been cited for a lack of kid-friendly choices.
  • Room-Specific Issues: Occasional complaints include inadequate lighting for makeup application in bathrooms and the relative smallness of the TV and mini-fridge compared to the spacious rooms. Standard double rooms might feel cramped for larger families.
  • Maintenance & Operations: Isolated reports of maintenance issues, such as a broken TV or non-functioning in-room phone, and elevator problems (e.g., one of two elevators being out of service) have been mentioned.
  • Significant Incident: A very serious concern involved a guest's personal belongings being removed from their room before check-out was complete, leading to loss and a police report. This indicates a potential issue with housekeeping protocols or accountability in isolated instances.

I had such a great stay at the Thompson Hotel in Gold Coast Chicago. The views alone are worth it. Waking up every morning to snow falling over the lake and the city while working in Chicago felt genuinely special and grounding. The location is perfect right in the middle of everything but still calm enough to feel like a true retreat. Everyone I interacted with was friendly and welcoming which m...

Loved the location - hotel service was friendly and great! However our room was so hot - told the front desk 3 times from when we checked in to when we left - they claimed they passed on the information- however every night our room was 76 degrees or warmer - paid extra for high room king and had rough nights sweating while sleeping

This was the most perfect trip with my family. The bed's super comfy! Sleeping like a baby every night! As it is a holiday, the area is significantly livelier than usual, necessitating advance preparations for travel arrangements. No doubt !! The hotel service is always awesome!!

The Thompson Hotel may be the best deal going for any hotel in the United States. “Location, Location, Location” is a predominant theme for hotel real estate, and the Thompson’s is perfectly situated in the heart of the best nightlife in Chicago. Their GM Anthony Beach and his staff will make sure you are taken care of during your stay. I couldn’t recommend this hotel enough.

Great location, nice furniture, and comfortable bedding. Great check-in experience at the front desk, Ody was very friendly and helped finding me a room when i arrived earlier than expected. I do wish they have slightly more lighting in the room.
