Expert Review: The Peninsula New York
The Peninsula New York, a distinguished Michelin One Key property, consistently receives high praise for its blend of classic elegance and contemporary luxury, offering an exceptional stay in the heart of Manhattan.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Peninsula New York is overwhelmingly positive, often earning ratings such as Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond, in addition to its Michelin One Key status. Guests frequently describe it as one of New York City's most luxurious and refined hotels, providing an "outstanding" and "amazing" experience. The property exudes a calm and stately atmosphere, making it a peaceful sanctuary amidst the bustling city.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud the hotel's impeccable service, prime location, and exceptional amenities. The recently renovated public areas and guest rooms contribute to its fresh and luxurious appeal. Key highlights include the popular Salon de Ning rooftop bar with its spectacular city views, the state-of-the-art spa, and the stunning indoor pool that boasts panoramic views of Midtown. The "Peninsula Time" flexible check-in and check-out program is also a highly valued perk for many travelers.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at The Peninsula New York have undergone a complete renovation by Bill Rooney Studio, resulting in a fresh, sophisticated, and uncluttered yet sumptuous design. The new aesthetic features ethereal colors, including silvery sofas, topaz-blue curtains, and geometric carpeting, replacing older, drabber palettes. Even standard Superior-category rooms are notably spacious for New York City, starting at 370 square feet, with some suites offering over 700 square feet. Guests appreciate the advanced in-room technology, including tablets to control lighting, temperature, and room service. The marble bathrooms are luxurious, featuring deep soaking tubs, new white alabaster lighting sconces, and often built-in LCD televisions and bath-side control panels. Beds and bedding are consistently described as very comfortable.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's main restaurant, Clement, offers contemporary American cuisine and is a popular spot for breakfast and weekend brunch. Guests praise its elegant design, reminiscent of a polished New York City apartment, and the personable, attentive staff. Breakfast options are extensive, including Continental, Vegetarian, Gluten-free, and American à la carte choices. While delicious, breakfast can be quite expensive if not included in the room rate or through affiliate booking programs. The Salon de Ning rooftop bar is a major draw, offering cocktails and stunning Manhattan vistas.
5. Service & Staff
The service at The Peninsula New York is consistently highlighted as exceptional, often described as "top notch," "phenomenal," "precise and efficient," and "incredibly professional". Staff members are noted for their diligent, understated care and attentiveness, with doormen promptly taking bags and knowing guests by name. Check-in is typically friendly and efficient. Many guests commend the staff for going above and beyond to ensure a comfortable stay.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Peninsula New York boasts an "excellent" and "ideal" central location at 700 Fifth Avenue at 55th Street in Midtown Manhattan. This puts guests within easy walking distance of major attractions such as Fifth Avenue shopping, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and Broadway theaters. The hotel is also conveniently close to subway stations, facilitating exploration of the city. A complimentary house car service is available for guests, and those in suites may even have access to a self-drive Mini Cooper S Clubman for a few hours.
7. Value & Pricing
As a premier luxury hotel, The Peninsula New York commands premium pricing. Standard room rates typically start around $882-$1,235 per night, with suites ranging from approximately $1,341 to over $4,500. While these prices are considered high, many guests feel the experience is "worth it" for the unparalleled luxury, service, and extensive amenities. Booking through affiliate networks like American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts or Chase Travel can provide significant value-added benefits such as complimentary breakfast, room upgrades, property credits, and late checkout.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms or recurring issues have been noted. Previously, some reviews mentioned rooms feeling "dated," but this has been largely addressed by the recent comprehensive renovation. More recent feedback included an instance of inconsistent hot water in a shower and small shower sizes, as well as occasional inconsistencies in doorman service. Dining, while high quality, can be quite expensive, particularly for breakfast if not included in the rate. Additionally, seating at the popular rooftop terrace, Salon de Ning, is often on a first-come, first-served basis unless a minimum spend reservation is made, and it can fill up quickly. Some guests noted the absence of a coffee maker in certain room categories, though other sources indicate they are generally available.

We stayed in the Peninsula for a week and we have been blown away by the experience. We have stayed in multiple nice hotels in the area but each time we come to NYC we try a new one, well, from now on we will ONLY be staying in The Peninsula as it’s impossible to go anywhere else now. The location, service, facilities and comfort is exceptional. We are already planning our next visit, thank you.

We stayed at The Peninsula New York after having such a wonderful experience at the Peninsula in Los Angeles for afternoon tea and the spa, and this stay absolutely lived up to our expectations. We’ve previously stayed at the St. Regis across the street and the Ritz-Carlton as well, but the Peninsula truly stands out. The location is unbeatable — right in the heart of Manhattan, surrounded by all...

Did a one day trip to NYC to catch a matinee and a great dinner out. The hotel was terrific. Staff throughout was professional, attentive and genuinely concerned with making our stay epic. The small touches were surprising and welcomed and the Clement restaurant surpassed expectations. Easily walkable to theaters restaurants etc. We will return.

I have stayed at The Peninsula in NYC about 8 times through the years. Most of my stays have been great. This last trip in Dec was not the five star quality I normally have experienced there, The room was cold when we got there. I called downstairs and the "engineer" came up to check out the situation. The thermostat said 75 degrees but he pointed his equipment and it said 67 degree in the room.....
