Expert Review: Bedford Post Inn

Bedford Post Inn: A Rustic-Chic Retreat in the Hudson Valley

The Bedford Post Inn, a Michelin Key Selected property nestled in Westchester County's scenic Bedford, offers a highly acclaimed luxury experience that blends old-world elegance with contemporary charm. With an overwhelmingly positive guest sentiment, this eight-room inn, co-owned by Richard Gere, is celebrated for its serene atmosphere, exceptional service, and sophisticated design.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Bedford Post Inn consistently receives exceptional to highly positive reviews, with guests frequently describing it as "spectacular in every way" and "top-notch". It boasts high scores for cleanliness, comfort, and staff performance on various platforms. The overall consensus highlights a tranquil and luxurious escape.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enchanted by the inn's beautiful architecture, the quality and comfort of its rooms, and the delightful breakfast experience. The serene and relaxing environment, often enhanced by working fireplaces in the rooms, is a recurring highlight. The inn's ability to blend rustic charm with cosmopolitan tastes, including its dedicated yoga studio and complimentary in-room snacks, adds to its allure.

3. Room Quality

The inn features eight luxuriously appointed rooms, each uniquely designed with five different layouts. These spacious accommodations are decorated in a classic colonial style, featuring tasteful decor, luxurious Frette bedding and linens, and elegant wood floors. Many rooms enhance the cozy ambiance with working gas fireplaces, and some offer private terraces overlooking the surrounding lawns and woods. The bathrooms are a standout, boasting heated marble floors, restored antique bathtubs, and high-end amenities like Sangre de Fruta toiletries, Dyson hair dryers, and Bang & Olufsen speakers.

4. Dining Experience

The Bedford Post Inn offers a refined culinary program across its two distinct venues: the Bedford Post Tavern and the Bedford Post Barn. The Bedford Post Tavern, the inn's main restaurant, specializes in elevated American bistro classics, with a menu featuring a raw bar, appetizers such as tuna crudo and steak tartare, and entrees like crab-stuffed lobster frites, beet au poivre, grilled branzino, and a classic burger. The culinary philosophy emphasizes fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients.

A complimentary continental breakfast is served daily, offering made-to-order egg dishes, yogurt, granola, pastries, coffee, and juice. Guests can enjoy breakfast in The Nook or in the charming cobblestoned courtyard. While The Bedford Post Barn previously operated as a cafe, as of March 1st, 2026, breakfast, brunch, and lunch will also be served at the Bedford Post Tavern. An inviting wine hour, complete with a charcuterie board, is hosted daily in the hotel lounge from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Room service is available 24 hours a day, offering a selection of local snacks and drinks.

5. Service & Staff

The staff and service at the Bedford Post Inn consistently receive high praise. Guests frequently describe the hospitality as "wonderful," "exceptional," "first-rate," and "very friendly and accommodating." The environment is noted as "welcoming and calm," with staff often going above and beyond to provide helpful recommendations.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Bedford Post Inn is ideally situated in Bedford, Westchester County, New York, approximately an hour's drive from Manhattan. The historic Dutch Colonial farmhouse is set on 20 acres of lush woodlands, offering a picturesque and tranquil backdrop.

Accessibility is convenient, with guests able to take a train from Grand Central to the Bedford Hills Metro North station. The inn provides a designated shuttle car (a new electric BMW) for a short 10-minute transfer. The area is known for its beautiful colonial-style homes and local celebrities. Nearby attractions include the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, the Mianus River Gorge Preserve, the Pound Ridge Nature Preserve, and Philip Johnson's Glass House. Free private parking is available on-site.

7. Value & Pricing

A stay at the Bedford Post Inn reflects its luxury status, with prices for a one-night stay typically starting from around $550.0. While some guests note the higher price point, the overall consensus suggests that the experience aligns with the cost for those seeking a premium getaway. May is generally considered the high season, with December offering the lowest average prices.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some guest feedback occasionally mentions areas for improvement. A few guests felt that for the luxury price, they expected a more comprehensive "full-service hotel" experience, and in isolated cases, the restaurant was found to be unexpectedly closed. Minor criticisms include occasional noise transfer between rooms and some difficulty with room heating controls. Older reviews also indicated that WiFi and cell phone coverage could be inconsistent. It's worth noting that some former employee reviews on third-party sites have cited issues with management and workplace culture, particularly within the restaurant, which, if left unaddressed, could indirectly affect the guest experience.

Our family came here tonight for a birthday dinner. Perhaps they were busy or understaffed, or maybe our server was new to the job. The food was top notch! The service was not unfortunately. Mainly in-between courses we were left waiting for a long time before things would be cleared and then we were not reset for our next course. When our entrees hit the table we sat without silverware for about ...
