The Willard InterContinental, Washington D.C., a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property, consistently earns high praise for its blend of historic grandeur, prime location, and exceptional service.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for the Willard InterContinental is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "fabulous," "amazing," "wonderful," and "simply the best hotel in D.C.". It holds an "Exceptional" rating from many guests and is considered one of the most iconic luxury hotels in the United States. Michelin Guide guests have rated its overall experience at 19.1 out of 20.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently love the hotel's rich history, elegant Beaux-Arts design, and central location. The "old-school hospitality" and the sophisticated ambiance are frequently mentioned.
- Service: Top-notch service with staff often anticipating needs.
- Location: Unbeatable, just steps from the White House, National Mall, and major attractions.
- Design & Ambiance: Beautifully restored property with regal Old World decor, an extravagant lobby, and elegant touches throughout. The grandiose lobby is a particular highlight, with many thoughtful historical details.
- Amenities: A modern fitness center, a spa with a sauna and steam room, elegant ballrooms, a business center, and unique offerings like a children's library and afternoon tea are appreciated.
3. Room Quality
The 335 guest rooms and suites at the Willard InterContinental were recently refreshed, maintaining their traditional charm while offering modern comforts.
- Comfort: Beds are noted as very comfortable, ensuring a good night's sleep.
- Design: Rooms feature classic wooden furnishings, light marble bathrooms, and a red-cream-and-green color scheme. They are adorned with reproduction furniture, rich fabrics, custom-made wool carpets, and ornate window treatments.
- Spaciousness: Standard rooms are generally spacious, starting at 375-425 square feet, which is considered oversized for D.C. hotel standards. Suites can range up to 2,300 square feet.
- Amenities: Rooms include well-stocked minibars (electronic with automatic charging), bathrobes, Keurig coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs (though some note bedroom TVs may lack smart features like Netflix), iPod stereos, and large work desks with USB charging ports. Many rooms offer prime views of Pennsylvania Avenue, the Washington Monument, or the Capitol. Accessible rooms are particularly well-regarded for their spaciousness and features like roll-in showers and separate tubs.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel offers several dining options, generally well-received.
- Cafe du Parc: The main sit-down restaurant, a French brasserie, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast, available as a buffet or à la carte, is often praised as excellent. Some guests have raved about specific dishes, like the filet mignon. However, one guest found the dinner experience at the restaurant to be "not up to our standard".
- Round Robin Bar: This historic, wood-heavy, circular bar is a famous spot known for its cocktails, particularly the mint julep, a staple since 1830. It's a popular "see-and-be-seen" space. Small plates are also available here. It can get crowded and seating can be tight.
- Peacock Alley: Hosts a renowned traditional afternoon tea service, especially popular during cherry blossom season, and offers a holiday version around Christmas.
- Le Cafe: Located on the first floor for lighter snacks, coffee, and drinks.
- In-room Dining: Available, with gluten-free and vegetarian options.

6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel's location is a significant draw, earning a 9.7 out of 10 rating for location.
- Neighborhood & Attractions: Ideally situated on Pennsylvania Avenue, just one or two blocks from the White House and within a five-to-six-minute walk to the National Mall, Washington Monument, and other iconic landmarks. It's also close to museums, galleries, and the designer shops of CityCenterDC.
- Transport: Within walking distance to multiple Metro stations. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is 3.3 miles away, and Union Station is 1.8 miles.
- Accessibility: The hotel is praised for its accessibility, with features like an accessible registration desk, restaurants, spa, business center, visual alarms, braille signage, and particularly spacious and well-equipped accessible rooms with roll-in showers.
7. Value & Pricing
The Willard InterContinental is a luxury property, and its pricing reflects that.
- Price Range: While not cheap, prices tend to be lower than some nearby luxury properties like the Hay-Adams and St. Regis. Room prices vary significantly based on accommodation type and time of year. Award stays typically range from 49,000 to 120,000 IHG One Rewards points per night for standard rooms. Cash rates can be substantial, with some suites costing over $2,000 per night.
- Value Perception: Many guests find the experience worth the cost, especially considering the historic significance, prime location, and high level of service. IHG elite members can find particularly good value through upgrades and other perks.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:
- Dining (Dinner): One guest expressed dissatisfaction with the dinner experience at Cafe du Parc.

- Room Cleanliness: In one instance, a guest found food crumbs and unclean mirrors upon entering their room, despite being assured of cleanliness.
- Round Robin Bar Seating: The popular Round Robin Bar can be small, and seats fill up quickly, making it hard to grab a spot.

- Mini-bar Charges: The electronic minibars automatically charge the room when items are selected, which can be a surprise for those accustomed to replacing items.

Dear Willard Team, I wanted to extend my sincere thanks for the exceptional service during my recent stay. Although my trip began with a brief issue, your front desk staff, and the manager on duty on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, handled everything with such professionalism and care. They quickly resolved the matter and were incredibly generous with their service and the room upgrade. We were also...

I’m writing this review as I sit in my room, watching my food get cold, all while waiting on condiments to be delivered for my breakfast I ordered as in room dining. To not include syrup for breakfast pancakes is a crime in itself and honestly the final straw I’ve had with my one night stay at The Willard on Christmas Eve. Check-in was subpar. The gentlemen checking me in was not welcoming and al...

The rooms are amazing, the venue is beautiful, the common areas are inviting and cozy, the location is unparalleled. The food service is a catastrophe. We wanted coffee and pastries at the end of a wonderful day touring DC. We approached the podium, talking loudly about wanting cake and a nice place to quietly talk. The maitre denied us service, telling us the dining room was limited for full dinn...

Great hotel! The room was beautiful and impeccably clean! The valet, front desk and housekeeping services were all very good. It’s a little pricey but we had a very nice stay here. Two warnings, though: 1. Stay away from the French restaurant there, Cafe Du Parc. Very rude host(s) and the food sucked. Just to give you a little insight, we wanted coffee and dessert the first night we arrived. T...

Had breakfast at the Cafe Du Parc - great food there plus the hotel is beautiful. With that, the hotel’s urinal design is terrible. The overhead ledge sitting above the urinal sits right at forehead height, and because the urinals are slightly recessed, you naturally step forward straight into head-bonk territory…pee-ers beware

My husband and I were chasing a Home Alone 2 fantasy. Lost in New York energy, but in DC. Christmas robes. Snacks packed. Jenny Lind Suite booked. That jetted tub was supposed to earn its keep. The room: genuinely beautiful. The technology: aggressively dated. The vibe: a 90s time capsule, complete with missing doorknobs. There was effort here, but it felt like the hotel was holding its breath, a...
