Hasbrouck House: A Retrospective Review of a Formerly Michelin Key Selected Property in Stone Ridge, United States

Please note: Hasbrouck House officially closed on January 3, 2026, with staff terminations, and is currently listed as closed until at least December 31, 2026. This review reflects its operations and reputation as a Michelin Key Selected property prior to its closure.

Hasbrouck House, nestled in the historic hamlet of Stone Ridge, New York, was widely celebrated as a sophisticated and tranquil escape in the Hudson Valley. Prior to its abrupt closure, it had earned a Michelin Key selection, a testament to its exceptional quality and unique guest experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Before its closure, the general sentiment for Hasbrouck House was overwhelmingly positive, often described as "exceptional" and a "wonderful spot." Guests consistently lauded its blend of historic charm with modern luxury, making it a favored destination for romantic getaways, anniversary trips, and even corporate retreats. The atmosphere was often characterized as refined, tasteful, clean, and wonderfully historic, exuding a low-key elegance.

2. Key Highlights

Guests frequently praised several aspects of Hasbrouck House that contributed to its allure:

  • Design & Ambiance: The 18th-century Dutch Colonial mansion, built in 1757, was meticulously renovated in 2016, preserving its historic architecture while incorporating clean-lined interiors and layered textures for a modern, luxurious feel. Common spaces, such as the Club Room, were noted for their coziness, featuring plush seating, vintage French club chairs, and a large wood-burning hearth.
  • Amenities & Grounds: Set on 40 to 55 park-like acres, the property offered an expansive lawn, a private lake, and hiking trails. Seasonal amenities included a 55-foot swimming pool (originally built in 1923), nightly bonfires, outdoor movie screenings, concerts, and archery. Guests could also explore the adjacent Stone Ridge Orchard. Wellness services, including massages, were available in a treatment room or in-suite.
  • Dining: The on-site restaurant, Butterfield, was a significant highlight, offering a highly-regarded farm-to-table dining experience.

3. Room Quality

Hasbrouck House offered 20 to 29 unique rooms, lofts, and suites spread across its main house, Stable House, Carriage House, and a private cottage. Each room was described as bright, homey, and elegantly curated, blending vintage charm with modern elements.

Key features included:

  • Wooden floors and hand-woven rugs.
  • Plush beds with high-quality Frette linens and down comforters.
  • Modern conveniences such as radiant heated bathroom floors, custom lighting by Materia Designs, Nespresso machines, iHome docking stations, sound systems, and Wi-Fi hotspots.
  • Locally stocked mini-bars and Aesop or Grown Alchemist toiletries.
  • Many rooms featured period details like vaulted ceilings, stone or gas fireplaces, and deep, freestanding bathtubs, contributing to a romantic ambiance.

One guest, however, noted that a particular room (#9) was very small with low ceilings.

4. Dining Experience

The on-site restaurant, Butterfield, was consistently cited as a highlight of a stay at Hasbrouck House. It was known for its seasonal farm-to-table menu, inspired by fresh produce from the Hudson Valley. The dining room was described as magnificent, with sleek black leather booths, wood accents, and brass decor, creating an intimate setting. A private chef's table within the kitchen offered a coveted dining experience.

Butterfield also featured a bar and lounge, offering craft cocktails, local beers, and a curated wine list. During warmer months, dining was available on a garden terrace, and a seasonal "Cauldron Bar" provided an outdoor option with unique offerings like truffle fondue. Brunch and dinner menus were diverse, featuring dishes like poached pear French toast, the Butterfield Burger, steak, fish, focaccia bread, and various entrees.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback generally indicated "GREAT HOSPITALITY" at Hasbrouck House. The service in the restaurant, Butterfield, was particularly praised as being among the best in upstate New York. Room service was noted as attentive. The general manager, James Anthony, was regarded as a "hospitality king."

However, employee reviews on platforms like Indeed.com presented a more mixed picture regarding internal staff treatment. While some employees mentioned a "great work environment" and "great people to work with," others reported that "owners don't care about staff" and that "pay and benefits are bad," with employees feeling "expendable." There were also complaints about long hours without breaks and high kitchen temperatures.

6. Location & Accessibility

Hasbrouck House was situated in the quaint and historic hamlet of Stone Ridge, New York, about a two-hour drive from New York City. The location offered an idyllic escape surrounded by the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains.

Nearby attractions and activities included:

  • Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park, offering opportunities for hiking, with features like Split Rock swimming hole and Awosting Falls.
  • The Ashokan Reservoir for leisurely walks with scenic views.
  • Proximity to vibrant communities like Kingston, Phoenicia, and Woodstock.
  • Access to apple picking at Stone Ridge Orchard, which bordered the property.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific pricing for Michelin Key properties can vary, Hasbrouck House was considered a luxury boutique hotel. Average weeknight prices were around $496, and weekend nights averaged $735, with prices fluctuating significantly by season. January was typically the cheapest month, while September was the most expensive. Wedding packages started around $13,800 for 50 guests, with a required two-night buyout of all guest rooms. Guests often received welcome treats or hotel credits upon arrival.

8. Common Complaints

While overall guest sentiment was very positive, employee reviews indicated significant concerns regarding management and employee welfare. Some former staff members cited issues with "mismanagement" by an "absentee owner" who lacked knowledge in running a hotel and restaurant. These internal issues potentially contributed to the abrupt closure. Aside from one minor note about a small room, specific recurring complaints from guests were not prominently highlighted in available reviews prior to the closure.

Current Status: Hasbrouck House, including its restaurant Butterfield, closed its doors on January 3, 2026. Employees received termination notices, though the owners initially suggested it was a seasonal closing with plans to reopen in April under new management, a statement that was later retracted and led to confusion among former staff. Expedia currently lists the property as closed until at least the end of 2026. The future of this once-esteemed Michelin Key Selected property remains uncertain.

Stayed at the House Book House during spring it was absolutely spectacular! Beautiful historic charm with luxurious atmosphere and wonderful energy. The room was large and fabulous. I hear they’re closed for enhancements but I’ll definitely be back once they reopen.

We just stayed last week for 2 nights. The place is beautiful, built in the 1700's with modern amenities that don't distract from the original historical details. The room was beautifully appointed with a bed so comfortable I didn't feel anything when my husband rolled over and the bathroom is stunning with heated floors. The grounds are impeccably kept with a gorgeous pool I couldn't use only bec...

We stayed at Hasbrouck house two months ago and enjoyed our stay a lot. It’s a charming hotel with 3 different houses on the property. We stayed at the carriage house which had huge rooms and right next to the main house. We got to explore main house as well which has the club room for guests, a bar, and the restaurant (Butterfield) with great food. I think what makes this property unique is the...

Like some other reviews said, this has potential to be a wonderful luxury spot to enjoy in the area. The location is great, the room was very clean, and the bed was comfortable. But when we arrived, no staff were to be found at the front desk and we could hear a number of them chatting away behind an employee only door. We were informed at arrival that our original room was double booked due to so...

I will begin by saying that everyone who works at this hotel is lovely, the bartender is lovely and made delicious drinks. BUT, this hotel is extremely overpriced for what you get. My room was small, stuffy, and kind of humid. The bed felt a little wet. The “mini bar” is a little tray in the window sill with canned drinks. The desk is a cheap little Walmart piece. The pool is dirty (literally coat...

Our room was huge! For 2 adults and 3 children we had tons of space. The rooms were very clean, the beds are comfortable with excellent pillows & linens. The staff were lovely and accommodating. Breakfast was small but fresh. The coffee wasn't the best and I couldn't figure out how to work the in room nespresso. The bar was fantastic with amazing drinks. My children loved the game room.
