Expert Review: W Philadelphia

The W Philadelphia, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a vibrant and luxurious stay in the heart of the city, blending contemporary design with urban excitement.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The W Philadelphia generally receives strong positive feedback, with overall ratings often in the "Excellent" or "Very Good" range. Agoda shows a remarkable overall rating of 9.6, with perfect scores of 10.0 for value, facilities, cleanliness, and location. Booking.com shows an 8.2 ("Very Good") based on over 600 reviews, with high marks for location (9.1) and staff (8.7). Priceline gives it an 8.2 ("Very Good") based on nearly 800 reviews, with satisfaction at 9.7. Marriott's direct guest reviews indicate an average of 3.6 out of 5, with higher scores for location (4.5) and cleanliness (4.0). Trip.com shows an 8.3/10. The hotel's "Michelin Key Selected" status further affirms its quality. The general sentiment is that it's a stylish, well-located hotel with impressive amenities, though some experiences with service can be inconsistent.

2. Key Highlights

Guests frequently praise the W Philadelphia for its prime location, stylish design, and exceptional amenities. The hotel's modern and provocative design, which pays homage to Philadelphia's street art, musical legacy, and local craftsmanship, is a significant draw. Highlights include the vibrant lobby lounge known as "The Living Room," the "WET Deck" with its heated, year-round outdoor pool, cabanas, and firepit, and the serene "Secret Garden" featuring illuminated statues and lush greenery. A state-of-the-art, 24-hour fitness center and an AWAY Spa also receive high acclaim. The stunning city views from various points in the hotel, especially from upper-floor rooms and the rooftop areas, are also a recurring positive.

3. Room Quality

The W Philadelphia offers thoughtfully designed rooms and suites that prioritize comfort and convenience with a blend of contemporary style and urban chic. Rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows that provide panoramic city views. Guests can expect plush bathrobes, high-quality hair dryers, well-stocked mini-bars, and satellite/cable TV. Specific room types include "Wonderful Guest Rooms" (King bed), "Fabulous Guest Rooms" (two Queen beds with skyline views), "Spectacular Guest Rooms" (upper floors, skyline view), and various suites like the "Studio Suite" and "Fantastic Two-Room Suite" for added space. Design elements include textured wallpaper, dark and bold decor with black and deep red accents, funky light fixtures, and local art. Some guest feedback notes that rooms are "nice and comforting" and "spacious". However, some guests have mentioned rooms being "dark" and in some cases, "small for the price paid".

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's main dining establishment is Dolce, a modern Italian restaurant that aims to transport guests to 1960s Rome with its fresh, regional dishes. Dolce serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and some guests have praised the lunch offerings. The Living Room, the hotel's lobby lounge, is highly regarded for its fantastic and expertly crafted cocktails. There is also a stylish coffee shop for quick energizers. Room service is available for guests who prefer to dine in their rooms. While dinner options at Dolce are considered decent and generously portioned, breakfast dishes have sometimes left guests wanting more. One guest also noted that breakfast might be a budget to spend at the restaurant, which they found unusual.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback on service and staff is somewhat mixed, though many experiences are positive. Many guests have praised the employees as "respectful and helpful," "very professional," "friendly and accommodating," and "gracious and attentive". Special occasions, such as anniversaries, have been acknowledged with complimentary gestures like wine and cake. However, some reviews indicate that service can be "hit and miss" and, in some instances, "subpar," with staff not appearing to care about guests. There have been reports of difficulties getting assistance with luggage and front desk staff not being proactive.

6. Location & Accessibility

The W Philadelphia boasts an excellent and highly central location in Center City, making it ideal for exploring Philadelphia. It is situated mere steps away from the ornate Philadelphia City Hall and offers easy access to a multitude of shops, restaurants, entertainment venues, and major landmarks. It's within walking distance of the Pennsylvania Convention Center (a 12-minute walk), Rittenhouse Square, Dilworth Park, Love Park, Reading Terminal Market, and the Mutter Museum. Public transportation, specifically the SEPTA 15th Street Station, is less than a five-minute walk away, making it convenient for those who prefer not to drive. Philadelphia International Airport is approximately 7.5 miles away.

7. Value & Pricing

The W Philadelphia is positioned as an upscale hotel offering a luxury experience. Average room prices vary, with some sources listing an average of $405 per room and others showing rates starting from $207 to $489 depending on the booking platform and dates. While some guests feel it offers "unparalleled luxury at an affordable price" and "exceptional value for money" considering the amenities, others have found the pricing to be "certainly high" and "not worth it" given perceived service inconsistencies. Value for money ratings vary, from 10.0 on Agoda to 8.4, 8.0 on Booking.com, 8 on Priceline, and 3.5 out of 5 on Marriott's direct reviews.

8. Common Complaints

While generally well-received, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Inconsistent Service: A significant complaint revolves around inconsistent service, with some guests experiencing subpar or unhelpful staff interactions, particularly at the front desk or with valet.
  • Noise: One guest reported a "consistent and piercing hummmm" in their room, suggesting potential noise issues in some areas of the hotel.
  • Cleanliness Issues: Despite high cleanliness ratings in some areas, a few reviews mention minor cleanliness issues such as dust-covered vents, dirty spots on walls, food crumbs in elevators, and even cigarette burns in a room.
  • Room Size and Layout: Some guests felt that the "bedroom is really small for the price paid" and noted unusual bathroom configurations where the sink is "literally in the room with you".
  • Breakfast Experience: While dinner at Dolce is generally well-received, the breakfast offerings have sometimes been a point of dissatisfaction.
  • Broken Appliances: There have been isolated complaints about broken in-room appliances, such as a non-functioning refrigerator.
  • Pet Fees: One guest noted a "surprise increase in pet stay that more than doubled" and a lack of expected pet amenities.
  • Valet Parking Charges: Valet parking can be expensive, with one guest being charged for two nights despite only using it for 18 hours.

Our stay was wonderful. The dining at Dolce was wonderful. Keith and Claudio provided exceptional service as we dined and ensured that we were properly satisfied with our meals. Please request them if possible when dining at Dolce. The rooms were immaculate and the ambience was astonishing!

After reading other reviews, it seems like the current staff might be in on some kind of hustle / scam. Mind you, i have stayed at this location more times than I can count, but this was truly the worst....and i didn't even stay there this time. I had a reservation for 2 nights, but I am being charged for what seems to be 3 nights even tho I spoke with 2 representatives that told me since I was a ...

Good evening Google Family. This is my very first time here. This is a luxury hotel complete with all of the amenities. I visited because I left my phone in my Lyft ride. Nathan is the manager here and he helped me with my issue. He let me use his phone to contact Lyft. Nathan assists the guests here with their checking in and checking out and valet parking. Nathan suggested that I sit inside and ...

The spa is beautiful and amazing! The room we had had such a beautiful bathroom with a soaking tub and seperate shower. There's a curtain the opens up into the "bedroom" which we left open, but there are seperate glass wa...

It would have been a perfect 5/5 if they didn’t give me a room with an obstructed view, my shower had a door, and my room actually had a coffee maker. I overheard an agent upgrading someone’s room automatically to give them a better view when checking out and that was definitely not offered to me but it could have been because I booked through Delta Vacations and not the Marriott app where I’m a g...

The hotel is nice and the rooms provide a great view of the city and New Jersey. but we got stuck in the elevator twice and had to push the emergency button. To charge $9 for a 16oz bottle of Aquafina water is ridiculous so bring your own water and there was no refrigerator in the room that I had.. We had no iron in the room. Overall it’s nice hotel but the valet parking sucks because it’s too muc...
