Expert Review: Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia

The Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property, consistently earns high praise for its unique blend of historic charm and contemporary flair, coupled with an unbeatable location in the heart of the city's historic district.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "dreamy" and the hotel as the "best option" in Philadelphia. It boasts an impressive "Overall Experience" score of 18.3 out of 20 from the Michelin Guide. Guests appreciate its ability to combine luxury without pretentiousness, creating a cozy yet upscale atmosphere.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several outstanding features:

  • Location: Its prime position directly across from Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and Independence National Historical Park is a major draw for both leisure and business travelers.
  • Design: The hotel's "funky" and "whimsical" design stands out, featuring bright decor, bold colors, and stylishly mismatched furniture. This eclectic style thoughtfully incorporates historic touches from its 1907 bank building origins, such as coffered ceilings and original marble elevator banks, blending old and new seamlessly.
  • Amenities: Popular amenities include a gorgeous rooftop bar, Stratus, offering indoor and outdoor seating, a well-regarded restaurant (Red Owl Tavern), and numerous complimentary perks such as a daily wine hour in the lobby, morning coffee and tea, bikes, and kites. The hotel is also notably pet-friendly with no additional fees. Spa services are available for indulgence.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia are described as attractive, spacious, and appealing, furnished with high-end amenities. The decor mirrors the hotel's quirky aesthetic, featuring geometric patterned wallpaper and bold color schemes. Guests frequently praise the comfort of the beds and the quality of Frette linens. Standard in-room amenities include flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and Etro toiletries. Many "Parkview" and "Corner" rooms offer enviable views of Independence Hall or the Liberty Bell. Some spa suites even feature beautiful soaking tubs. However, interior-facing rooms might be a bit darker. While Parkview rooms offer iconic views, light sleepers should be aware that the hourly ringing of the clock bell from Independence Hall can be audible. Similarly, rooms on the 10th floor might experience noise from the rooftop bar. A charming touch noted by guests are the "very comfy leopard-print robes" provided in the rooms.

4. Dining Experience

Red Owl Tavern, the hotel's on-site restaurant, is a "solid" choice, serving contemporary American fare with a twist on comfort food. It offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with brunch available on weekends. Breakfast, in particular, has been described as "delicious" and "spectacular," though some guests find it a little overpriced. A "Grab & Go" counter is also available for quick options. The rooftop bar, Stratus, is a vibrant spot with a "New York vibe," popular for drinks and offering both indoor and outdoor seating.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia receive consistent commendation, often described as "excellent," "friendly," "very helpful," and "exceedingly amazing." Guests appreciate the staff's "complimentary, accommodating, efficient, helpful, cheerful, and polite" demeanor. Personalized touches, such as text messages checking in with guests, are noted as a thoughtful gesture. Staff members have gone above and beyond, from assisting with forgotten items in cars to proactively upgrading rooms to meet guest needs. However, some minor criticisms include inconsistent information sharing about hotel amenities at check-in and occasional feedback about mediocre coffee service.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is arguably its most celebrated asset. Situated in the "heart of Old City," it places guests "just steps" from Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Independence National Historical Park. This central position ensures that many of Philadelphia's key historical attractions, as well as numerous restaurants, bars, and shops, are within easy walking distance. Other nearby attractions include Penn's Landing, the Independence Seaport Museum, and City Hall. The hotel is conveniently close to public transportation, including a subway station, and is approximately a 25-minute drive from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). Parking options, such as the Bourse Garage, are available nearby.

7. Value & Pricing

Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia is considered to offer "exceptional value for money" despite its average room price of around $297, which is slightly higher than Philadelphia's city average of $243. Room rates can fluctuate significantly, ranging from approximately $102 to $2753, depending on the season and specific room type. November is typically the cheapest month to stay, while July is the most expensive. For those utilizing loyalty programs, IHG One Rewards points can be redeemed, with stays usually requiring between 30,000 and 50,000 points per night.

8. Common Complaints

While generally well-received, some recurring issues and criticisms include:

  • Interior-facing rooms can be perceived as dark.
  • The hourly ringing of the clock bell from Independence Hall can disturb light sleepers in Parkview rooms.
  • Rooms on the 10th floor may experience noise from the active rooftop bar.
  • Breakfast at Red Owl Tavern, while good, is sometimes seen as overpriced.
  • Some guests have reported that front desk staff do not always fully explain hotel amenities upon check-in.
  • The front desk area can become crowded and loud due to its size.
  • Minor service "misses," such as mediocre coffee service or a missed welcome gift for children, have been noted.
  • A few guests have expressed disappointment over the absence of complimentary bottled water or a coffee machine in the rooms.

This hotel was fine. The decor was pretty and staff friendly and helpful. Location great. Unfortunately there are a few things I think make it not somewhere I would stay again given the cost of the hotel. I expect more for the price. First, it's one of the first hotels I've stayed at in a long time that does not have smart tvs. So you have to watch just broadcast TV. The on demand was TWENTY FIV...

While this was not our first visit to the Kimpton Monaco, it was our first in a while and it did not disappoint! The rooms have been beautifully remodeled and everything just feels really thoughtfully done. There is refurbishment of the Red Owl Tavern and fitness center currently, but they are still serving Red Owl breakfast and lunch/dinner in different areas of the hotel. The wine reception from...

We are wrapping up an extended stay (over a week!) at Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia, and I truly can’t say enough about how special the experience was. We were in town while my dad recovered from surgery, so comfort and calm meant everything to us — and this hotel delivered that and more. In room service disappointing when it arrives in cardboard holder. Why would you offer coffee without milk and sugar? I had to call to ask for these. Borrowed charger for my phone did not stay in the plug. Ineffective. Offerings at the bar on 10 extremely limited. Great bartenders! I tried to checkout digitally with no success. Elevators are in bad need of repair. Staff were very nice!

Super location and friendly staff, but the room fell short. The water pressure was very weak, and I had some trouble getting them to honor a late checkout. It’s a convenient place to stay, but the lack of basic room quality and service consistency made the experience feel mediocre.

Response from the owner
