- Unique Western Ambiance & Design: The motel, originally part of a 1940s movie set, offers an authentic "Wild West" feel with intentionally designed spaces that help guests unwind. The rustic yet chic rooms and common areas are outfitted with custom furniture and local artisan touches.
- Location: Its prime spot "in the heart of Pioneertown" is directly across from the legendary Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace, a renowned music venue and restaurant. It's also a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, making it an ideal base for exploring the high desert.
- Stargazing: The dark desert skies provide an incredible opportunity for stargazing, often enjoyed from outdoor seating, hammocks, or by the communal outdoor fireplace.

Rooms are typically 400 sq ft (37 sq m) and feature private bathrooms with showers, work desks, wardrobes, and patios with mountain or garden views. Beds come in king, queen, or twin configurations.
The design incorporates beamed ceilings, chunky wooden furniture, rustic woven throws, and cowhide rugs. Amenities include complimentary WiFi, mini-fridges, camp chairs, and Grateful Desert bath products. It's important to note that rooms are intentionally devoid of televisions, encouraging guests to embrace the natural surroundings and disconnect. An ADA-compliant room with ramp access and an adapted ensuite is also available.
4. Dining Experience
While Pioneertown Motel does not have its own full-service restaurant, it offers a communal "Canteen" in room one. This Canteen provides free, 24/7 access to coffee, tea, and spring water, along with pastries in the morning.

Pioneertown Motel is situated at 5240 Curtis Road, in the historic "Old West" film set town of Pioneertown, California. It's strategically located right on the main street, steps away from the Pioneertown Wild West Theater and a short walk to shops, a museum, and most notably, Pappy & Harriet's.
The motel serves as an excellent base for exploring the high desert. Joshua Tree National Park is approximately 20-30 minutes away by car. Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is the nearest airport, about a 40-55 minute drive (around 31-34.5 miles). For those traveling by car, free on-site private parking is available. The area is known for stargazing, hiking, and horseback riding.
7. Value & Pricing
Pioneertown Motel is often considered a higher-end motel experience, with prices reflecting its unique offering and Michelin Key selection. As of February 2026, a 1-night stay for two adults can start from approximately $236 to $357, though prices can reach up to $500 per night. The average room rate in the past month was around $308.49, which is slightly less than the city's average of $369.81.
While some guests find the pricing "a little steep for a MOTEL!", many feel it is worth the cost for the comfortable accommodations, unique atmosphere, and prime location. The "value for money" is rated 8.5 out of 10 on Booking.com.
8. Common Complaints
While generally highly rated, some recurring criticisms and points to consider include:
- Dim Lighting: A few guests have mentioned that the lighting in rooms and bathrooms can be dim, making tasks like applying makeup challenging.
- No Televisions: The absence of TVs in rooms, while intentional for some, can be a drawback for others expecting this amenity.
- Thin Walls/Noise: Some guests have reported issues with thin walls, allowing noise from neighboring rooms to be heard.
- Lack of 24/7 Staff: The front desk closes at 11 PM, which may require guests arriving late to contact the property in advance for check-in instructions.
- Limited Room Amenities: Beyond the mini-fridge and bath products, rooms are intentionally basic, lacking items like microwaves or coffee machines within the room.
- Perceived Insecurity (Rare): One reviewer mentioned not feeling safe or secure traveling solo due to the remote nature and lack of 24-hour staff, though this is not a widespread complaint.
- Cleanliness of Concrete Floors (Occasional): While overall cleanliness is highly rated, one review mentioned concrete floors in guest rooms not being clean upon arrival.

This place was just what we were looking for. A quiet, no frills getaway with the basics done well. Rooms had great design and character with creature comforts like wool blankets and a guitar on the wall for cowboy chords. Nice mattresses and pillows and a couple chairs we could take outside to stargaze. No TVs, and that was perfect for us. There are a couple bars with live music in the area ...

Great western movies set motel. Tom and Sheri were wonderful hosts. Great location. Slow pace. Big sky and stargazing. Great canteen with coffee, Danish and variety of teas and fruits. Plenty of books to read. Hammocks, diners and cute shops within walking distance. Only thing is walls are too thin 😀

The last time i stayed here was 8 years ago and i’m happy to report that it is as idyllic as ever. There have been a couple of improvements that have not taken away from the overall ambiance. Wonderful rustic rooms with comfortable beds and great coffee. Beautiful views and nighttime star gazing, yet only a couple of minutes walk to The Red Dog saloon and Pappy and Harriet’s. Why did i leave it so...

Overall it's a decent place. The room was nice and clean. After I checked in I noticed there wasn't a TV so I checked their website and it mentions that 2 pages into the site under a FAQ tab. None of the hotel apps mentiom there's no TV. I think with a TV being a typical standard in a hotel room they should be clearer about that and have it on their 1st web page to avoid confusion. I understand ...

Definitely the best motel in the Pioneertown/Joshua Tree area. Spent several weeks here over the course of the past few years. Owned by the same group that own's Copper Room and Red Dog Saloon. Side note, it's not the Ritz, the staff are only semi-interested in your business as are the owners so it seems. That said, you're in the middle of the desert so keep your expectations relative. they're...

My friends and I stayed here for a weekend and we had such a beautiful time. There were hammocks outside of our room and Pappy's was just a walk away. You get to sleep amongst an Old Western saloon town and it's so cool. The owners were so kind - especially the lady. Amazing service. What could be better than this??
