Expert Review: Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden

Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden, a Michelin Key Selected property and part of Relais & Châteaux, consistently receives high praise for its elegant atmosphere, impeccable service, and prime location in the heart of Lisbon. Often described as a tranquil oasis, the hotel blends a sophisticated London townhouse aesthetic with traditional Portuguese details, creating a unique and luxurious experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently rating it as "excellent" or "exceptional." It holds a high score of 8.9 out of 10 on Booking.com, with specific high ratings for location (9.6), cleanliness (9.4), comfort (9.5), and staff (9.5). Many describe it as a 5-star experience that feels more like a private home than a hotel.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently love several aspects of the Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden. Key highlights include its central yet quiet location on Avenida da Liberdade, the serene garden and outdoor swimming pool, the distinctive design and attention to detail, and the outstanding service provided by the staff. The breakfast in the garden is also a frequently mentioned favorite. The hotel’s art collection and the mix of classic décor with clever technology are also appreciated.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden are described as extremely comfortable, with elegant and understated decor. They feature richly colored walls contrasting with light fabrics and colorful draperies, sophisticated furnishings, and are punctuated by antique furniture and paintings, creating a homely feel. Rooms come with amenities like air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, private bathrooms with bathrobes and slippers, and a Delta coffee machine in suites. While some rooms in the original building are noted as cozy and compact, many in the newer wing offer private balconies and freestanding cast iron tubs. Junior Suites, for instance, are spacious and some overlook Avenida da Liberdade.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's restaurant, Bougain Restaurant & Garden Bar (formerly Sítio Valverde), is highly regarded. It offers a contemporary Portuguese cuisine with Mediterranean influences, often inspired by Chef Carla Sousa's Cape Verdean roots and traditional Portuguese gastronomy. Guests can enjoy meals in the stylish restaurant or on the charming patio, which opens to the interior courtyard in warm weather.

Breakfast is consistently praised as "well above expectations," with plenty of choices, including à la carte options, and is often enjoyed in the garden. Offerings include fresh squeezed juices, pastries, charcuterie, cheeses, and cooked-to-order dishes like eggs Benedict. The restaurant also hosts themed dinners with live Fado music on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and jazz or bossa nova on Thursdays, while a Sunday brunch is accompanied by live jazz. Afternoon tea and cocktails are also available in the intimate ambiance of the patio.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden are a significant highlight, frequently described as "impeccable," "outstanding," "dedicated," "friendly," "knowledgeable," and "very helpful." Guests appreciate their attentiveness, professionalism, and warm hospitality, often making guests feel at home. The reception and concierge services are noted for being efficient in organizing tours, transport, car rentals, and tickets.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts an "excellent" and "incredible" central location on Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's elegant, tree-lined boulevard often compared to the Champs-Élysées. This prime spot offers easy access to shopping, restaurants, and many of Lisbon's main attractions, with several sights within walking distance. It is also conveniently located near a metro station, making transport straightforward.

7. Value & Pricing

While acknowledged as a luxury property, guests generally perceive the Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden as offering good value for money, scoring 8.3 on Booking.com for this aspect. Rates can start from around $195-$328 per night, going up depending on the room type and season. Its 5-star amenities, including a rooftop swimming pool, spa facilities, fitness room, and beautiful garden, contribute to its perceived worth.

8. Common Complaints

Despite overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring minor criticisms have been noted. Some guests found rooms to be a "little dark" or on the "small side" (though this was sometimes expected from descriptions). Noise from the central location can be an issue if windows are left open, and some guests mentioned air conditioning not being easy to work, or in one instance, being out of order (though the hotel offered a discount in that case). There was also a comment about croissants running out quickly at breakfast and undercooked poached eggs on one occasion. One guest found the hotel layout confusing to navigate initially, and another had a negative experience with the concierge.

The staff and service were excellent, and overall we enjoyed our stay. Our only issue — but unfortunately a significant one — was the motion-sensor lights located next to each side of the bed. Even small movements during the night, like reaching for water or getting up to use the bathroom, triggered the lights and repeatedly woke us up. We spoke with staff and were told the motion sensors cannot b...

This hotel is absolutely stunning! My husband and I stayed here for two nights on our honeymoon. The staff were so kind and flexible! We had two early mornings where they offered to pack up a cold breakfast for us to take on our adventures. Our room had an amazing view of the pool/restaurant. Bed was comfortable and clean! Our only complaint was when we checked in they let us know our room was ha...

We stayed here for 8 nights with our young daughter and compared to other RC hotels, this was a bit of a letdown. The hotel itself is in a great location and well furnished. Our suite was lovely and luxurious. However our bathtub leaked the second night. Our biggest frustration at this hotel was the service. Our room wasn't cleaned one day after being out for over 4hrs, and when trying to ask for ...

We just returned from a 3 night stay at Valverde and am happy to report that it was a very pleasant stay. The staff is attentive and professional. The rooms are cozy, spotless and beautifully cared for. The restaurant area also lovely with an “old Hollywood charm”. Very quiet oasis to enjoy brunch, etc. I would definitely return.
