Expert Review: Una Hotel Siracusa

Una Hotel Siracusa, a Michelin Key Selected property in Syracuse, Italy (also known as UNAHOTELS One Siracusa), offers a blend of modern design and Sicilian hospitality, aiming for a refined and relaxing stay.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Una Hotel Siracusa is largely positive, with guests frequently rating it as "Very Good" to "Excellent." Average ratings include 8.3 on Agoda, 8.4 on Booking.com, and a strong 4.3-4.4 out of 5 on Google. While the hotel is praised for its contemporary style and service, some recurring criticisms suggest areas for improvement.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently love the excellent staff performance and cleanliness of the hotel. The rooftop terrace (Sky Roof Bar) with its panoramic views of Syracuse is a significant draw, offering a sophisticated atmosphere for drinks. The spa facilities, notably the unique "Dream spa" carved into a natural cave with a thalasso pool, Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, and sensory shower, are often highlighted as a memorable experience, though usually for an additional fee. The modern design and ample free parking are also frequently appreciated by travelers. The hotel also features unique touches like a "robot butler" for room service, which some guests find quirky and fun.

3. Room Quality

The hotel boasts 44 spacious and luxurious rooms and suites, designed for comfort with a blend of modern amenities and elegance. Room types include Executive Deluxe Double Rooms (28 sqm with King Bed), Executive Double Rooms (25 sqm with King Bed), and Junior Suites (45 sqm with Queen Bed), all featuring 26-inch satellite LCD TVs and DVD players, private bathrooms, air conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. However, some guests have noted issues with room quality, describing them as "basic" or "tired" and in need of maintenance. Complaints have included damp towels, poor lighting, bad smells in bathrooms, and a lack of privacy due to absent blinds in some rooms. Some also found room sizes to be small, particularly considering the price.

4. Dining Experience

The breakfast at Una Hotel Siracusa receives high praise, often described as "excellent" and "very good," offering a buffet with freshly prepared à la carte options and fresh orange juice. The hotel's on-site Akademia restaurant offers gourmet Sicilian dishes in an elegant setting, while the Sky Roof Bar provides drinks and snacks with panoramic views. Guests have generally enjoyed the quality of the food and the restaurant's sophisticated atmosphere. However, some guests have experienced crowded breakfast areas when tour groups are present, leading to a less complete experience on occasion. There have also been isolated comments about restaurant food being disappointing or bland.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Una Hotel Siracusa is consistently highlighted as a major positive, with frequent mentions of being excellent, friendly, helpful, professional, and attentive. Guests appreciate their willingness to assist with check-in, provide local recommendations, and ensure a seamless stay. The multilingual staff is also a benefit for international travelers. While the overall sentiment is strong, some reviews indicate inconsistent staff responsiveness, particularly regarding room service delivered by the robot system.

6. Location & Accessibility

Una Hotel Siracusa is situated in a panoramic position, roughly a 10-minute drive from Ortigia, Siracusa's historic center. While its location is somewhat removed from the busiest tourist flow, offering a calmer environment, this also means a walk to Ortigia can take between 30 to 45 minutes. For those with a car, the free private parking at the hotel is a significant advantage, as parking in Ortigia can be difficult. The hotel is also a 5-minute drive from the Neapolis Archaeological Park and the Ear of Dionysius Cave, and near Latomia dei Cappuccini. Public transport options exist, with a bus stop nearby.

7. Value & Pricing

Many guests consider Una Hotel Siracusa to offer good value for money, with prices starting from approximately US$101-US$108 for a double room. This includes amenities like free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and free parking. However, a common point of contention is the additional cost for accessing the spa facilities, which some guests found expensive, ranging from €20 to €40 per person. Some reviews also suggest that while the hotel has premium pricing, certain services, like room service, did not always meet expectations for the cost paid.

8. Common Complaints

Recurring issues and criticisms include:

  • Distance to Ortigia: Many guests find the 30-45 minute walk to the historic center inconvenient, often necessitating taxis which can be expensive.
  • Spa Access Cost: The spa is a highlight, but the additional fee for entry is a frequent complaint.
  • Room Maintenance & Quality: Concerns about rooms appearing "tired," having maintenance issues (e.g., broken furniture, bad smells in bathrooms), or lacking privacy (no blinds) have been noted.
  • Breakfast Crowding: During peak times or with tour groups, the breakfast area can become very crowded, impacting the dining experience.
  • Inconsistent Service: While staff are generally excellent, some guests reported issues with the responsiveness of room service, particularly when using the robot delivery system.

3 stars overall because its definitely not 4 stars hotel. Positive points: the staff very kind, the decor of the reception. Negative points: very low quality breakfast not for 4 stars hotel, and we booked executive room but its the same as standard.

The location is perfect for walking around to take pictures of old streets and sunrise over the sea. The food was excellent. Watch out in the shower! Make sure the smaller nozzle is facing down before turning on the water.

We had no prior booking and booked there and then at 2300 hours. Rooms bed is wide, firm mattress . Had 1 charging point. Pool/spa not free - about 40 euro PP. Hot breakfast ( omelet can be ordered via app, fresh juices, ham cuts. ) but include in the stay price. Roof top with selfcervice bar ( you log into computer what you take) .

What a disappointment! Trip Advisor Winner… 2012… nothing might have happened until now… The hotel might have been a premium hotel in the years 2010s but is poorly maintained and requires a strong hold of maintenance and management. We stayed in an Easy Room (basic) and were not thrilled at all… bad smells, poor windows and visual tightness, noisy AC… Breakfast was ok even if a bit amateur for...

Absolutely amazing hotel - the best we stayed in while in Sicily! Such a contrast to all old-fashioned, overpriced hotels around! The breakfast was delicious - fresh every day prepared to order (not the pre-packed dry biscuits you find elsewhere), service 5 star (went extra mile to ensure we could watch a game we wanted to see), everything modern and high tech. Such an enjoyable stay! The spa is a...

The choice of this hotel was the travel agent's choice as part of a group trip to Sicily. People here were very kind and the place was clean and tidy. They cleaned and tidied our room with great care. Regarding its location it is a little remote compared to other choices. Not a great distance, around 25 minutes walking from the city center, but let's say that it the roads are not ideal for walking...
