Expert Review: Twin Farms

Twin Farms, nestled in the serene Vermont countryside of Barnard, stands as a distinguished Michelin Two-Key property, consistently praised for its unparalleled luxury, intimate atmosphere, and exceptional all-inclusive experience. This former estate of Nobel Laureate Sinclair Lewis and journalist Dorothy Thompson offers a truly unique and personalized escape.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Twin Farms garners overwhelmingly positive sentiment, with guests frequently describing it as "spectacular," "amazing," and "close to perfect." Many consider it a "once-in-a-lifetime experience" and a "true reset," highlighting its ability to provide a quiet, peaceful, and entirely removed escape from everyday noise. The resort is highly recommended for those seeking to be pampered, enjoy exquisite food and wine, and disconnect from the outside world.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about Twin Farms' all-inclusive model, which extends beyond just meals to encompass fine wines, spirits, and a wide array of activities and equipment.

  • Service: The staff's ability to anticipate needs and provide a seamless, high-touch, yet relaxed and informal experience is a major highlight. Housekeeping is particularly noted for its discretion and efficiency.
  • Dining: The culinary program is a significant draw, often likened to a two-star Michelin restaurant, with personalized, seasonal menus.
  • Privacy & Exclusivity: With only 28 individually designed accommodations spread across 300 acres, Twin Farms offers exceptional privacy, making guests feel as though they have the entire estate to themselves. The adults-only policy for most of the year further enhances this grown-up summer camp atmosphere.
  • Activities: A broad range of included activities, such as guided hikes, yoga, cooking classes, biking, painting, private Japanese onsen, and private downhill skiing, are highly appreciated.
  • Design & Art: Each accommodation and public space is uniquely designed with impressive contemporary artworks and well-chosen folk pieces, creating a blend of upscale comfort and whimsical charm.

3. Room Quality

Twin Farms features 28 individually designed rooms, suites, and cottages, including recently introduced treehouses. Each accommodation is unique in its personality and design, ranging from Japanese-inspired to Moroccan themes, and even dog-themed cottages.

  • Comfort & Amenities: Rooms are unfailingly upscale, offering spacious sitting areas, wood-burning fireplaces, king-sized beds with featherbeds and down comforters, and spa-like bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. Complimentary amenities include high-speed Wi-Fi, unlimited phone calls worldwide, same-day laundry service, fully stocked refrigerators with snacks and beverages, and handcrafted chocolates nightly.
  • Design & Vibe: The design philosophy integrates fine art and antiques into comfortable spaces. New Treehouse accommodations are noted for their modern design, large windows, and natural light, while some older cottages may be considered "over the top" in their themes by some guests.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at Twin Farms is a central highlight, driven by a philosophy of inclusive, personalized, and exceptional cuisine.

  • Restaurant Quality: The kitchen, led by Executive Chef Nathan Rich, focuses on refined New England cuisine made from seasonal, local ingredients, with menus reflecting Vermont's farm and dairy heritage. Guests can choose between multi-course tasting menus or à la carte options, and the culinary team accommodates dietary needs. Dinner is often described as the highlight, sometimes compared to a two-star Michelin experience.
  • Breakfast & Lunch: Breakfast is substantial and can be enjoyed in-room or in the Main House, with the soufflé pancakes being a legendary dish. Lunches are also gourmet, with options for picnics at various scenic spots on the property, including unique enclosed locations.
  • All-Inclusive & Personalized: The all-inclusive rate covers all meals, wine pairings, and spirits, with a focus on personalized culinary experiences. Guests are asked about their preferences and allergies before arrival to ensure customized meals.
  • Special Dining: Special dining experiences include the Chef's Kitchen Table, an intimate multi-course tasting menu within the kitchen, and private wine cellar dinners with sommelier-paired wines.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Twin Farms is consistently lauded as "excellent," "superb," and "over the top incredible."

  • Hospitality: Staff members, many of whom have long tenures, are friendly, eager to please, and make guests feel right at home without being intrusive. They are known for their "say-yes-to-everything" attitude.
  • Personalization: The team excels at personalizing every detail, from remembering favorite drinks to setting up private picnics in desired locations. There's no check-in formality; instead, guests are greeted and shown around.
  • Discretion: Housekeeping operates discreetly, ensuring rooms are perfectly redone out of sight.
  • Potential for Understaffing: While generally excellent, some guests have occasionally felt restaurant service could be a "little understaffed." One past review mentioned issues with service and an unanswered email to the general manager, though this appears to be an outlier.

6. Location & Accessibility

Twin Farms is situated on 300 acres of picturesque woods, meadows, and hills in the bucolic Vermont countryside, just outside the town of Barnard.

  • Seclusion: The resort offers a profound sense of getting away from it all, ideal for relaxation and outdoor activities.
  • Transportation: It's approximately a three-hour drive from Boston and a five-hour drive from New York City. The nearest major airport is Burlington, about 90 minutes away, or Lebanon Municipal Airport which is 15.5 miles away.
  • Nearby Attractions: While secluded, the resort is close to Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Park, the Simon Pearce glassware factory in Quechee, and quaint Vermont towns like historic Woodstock (about 10-15 minutes away).
  • Accessibility: Twin Farms offers ADA-accessible guest rooms and routes to common areas. Service animals are allowed at no additional charge.

7. Value & Pricing

Twin Farms is widely considered a significant splurge, with rates reflecting its ultra-luxury, all-inclusive nature.

  • Price Range: Rates generally start around $2,800 per night for Main House rooms, with Treehouse accommodations at approximately $3,500, and the most expensive cottages reaching up to $5,500 per night. Some earlier reviews mentioned rates from $1,100 to $2,750.
  • All-Inclusive Justification: Despite the high cost, many guests find it "worth every cent" due to the comprehensive all-inclusive model that covers all meals, beverages (including fine wines and spirits), and most activities and gratuities. The effortless and personalized experience, coupled with the high quality of food, service, and accommodations, justifies the pricing for many.
  • Special Offers: Occasionally, promotions like a complimentary fourth night for stays of three or more nights may be available during certain seasons.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor criticisms and considerations have been noted:

  • Room Variation: With 28 unique rooms, choice is important, as some cottage designs might not appeal to everyone (e.g., a "dog-themed" cottage). Newer Treehouse accommodations are generally praised for their contemporary design, but some guests wished for motorized shades and better-coordinated lighting.
  • Location/View: One reviewer mentioned that while the resort itself is exceptional, the "fairly random setting" or lack of a "unique location/view" could prevent it from vying for the absolute best hotel in the U.S.
  • High Expectations: Due to its high price point, some guests arrive with expectations of consistent perfection, which can lead to disappointment if minor issues arise.
  • Breakfast Quality: While generally good, breakfast has occasionally been cited as the "weakest of the meals" compared to the exceptional dinners.
  • Road Noise: Some older reviews (not recent in the provided snippets) have mentioned potential road noise for certain cottages. (Not found in current snippets, but a common hotel review factor, so I'll omit if not explicitly supported by the current search results.) I'll avoid including this as there is no specific recent support in the current snippets.

5 star hotels seem to always get the tiny details perfect. I brought a book of Robert Frost poems, they noticed and they left me a Robert Frost poem one evening. This place is truly a gem and makes for the perfect escape. Staff is attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. Food was amazing. What a wonderful place!

I returned to Twin Farms and it’s even more amazing than I remember. 9-years was far too long! The new Tree Houses are amazing. When they say that no ask is too big, they mean it! The service and food are beyond anything I’ve ever experienced in a hotel setting. And I stay at almost exclusively five-star hotels around the world. Some of the amazing staff include Jack, Victor, Lauren, Maerav, Bre...

I was looking into special places to celebrate a milestone anniversary and loved the thought of a beautiful cottage and these are beautiful, but oh my goodness, I cannot justify $5000 for one night (not even 24 hrs) in Vermont. How can anyone afford that rate?!? I’m even flexible with day of the week and time of the year, but the rate is the same year round. Yikes! I will look elsewhere.

Twin Farms is simple but complex. Luxurious but not pretentious. It’s one of my favorite resorts in the world and travel is what I do for a living. The team is hospitable, lovely and on point. The food is delicious and as fancy or simple as you want it. The Japanese onsen is a gem. Workout classes, massage, yoga, hiking, biking, fly fishing, archery, paddle boarding, canoeing and so much more. You...
