- Location: Its prime setting directly across from the Boston Public Garden and Boston Common, and on the renowned Newbury Street, is frequently cited as perfect and unbeatable.
- Design: The hotel’s aesthetic is celebrated for its understated modern design, classic elegance, and beautiful architecture. It incorporates luxurious details such as custom-designed furniture, rich green velvet curtains, and black-and-pearl herringbone floors, creating a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere.

3. Room Quality
The Newbury Boston's rooms are consistently praised for their elegance, comfort, and thoughtful design. They offer an "understated, modern design" with a "residential feel," incorporating calming color palettes, richly textured furnishings, and original artwork. Luxe details abound, including custom-designed furniture, thoughtful reading lights, Nespresso machines, and exclusive Byredo bath products. Many rooms are notably spacious, with king rooms typically ranging from 376 to 387 sq ft, and some suites offering up to 500 sq ft with two queen beds and generous bathrooms. A significant highlight for some guests are the 40 rooms that feature wood-burning fireplaces, complete with a dedicated "fireplace butler" service. Guests also appreciate the impeccable cleanliness and ample electrical sockets in the rooms. Desirable views include those overlooking the Boston Public Garden or the bustling streets of Back Bay.
4. Dining Experience
The Newbury Boston offers a diverse and highly-regarded dining scene:
- Contessa: Perched on the 17th floor, this Northern Italian rooftop restaurant is a major draw. Designed by Ken Fulk, it boasts a modern glass terrace with retractable panels, offering stunning panoramic views of the Back Bay and Boston Public Garden. Contessa is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, and is known for its glamorous atmosphere and inventive cuisine from Major Food Group. Menu highlights include classics like Veal Milanese, Bistecca Fiorentina, and unique offerings such as a Florentine style Benedict and the "Creme de Boston" dessert. Reservations are highly recommended.
- Street Bar: A local favorite, the speakeasy-style Street Bar is described as a "sexy bar" and a great spot for cocktails and food.
- The Library: This intimate space offers coffee and pastries in the mornings and transforms into a relaxed spot for cocktails and board games in the evening. It also serves as an exclusive lounge for hotel guests, providing complimentary grab-and-go water, continental breakfast options, and bar snacks.
- Breakfast: While the views from Contessa during breakfast are spectacular, some guests have found the quality and variety to be occasionally disappointing or overpriced. Breakfast can also be enjoyed at the Street Bar or through room service.
- Room Service: Available 24 hours a day, the room service menu is extensive and praised for its quality, though noted for its high pricing.
5. Service & Staff
The service at The Newbury Boston is consistently highlighted as a cornerstone of the guest experience, frequently described as "exceptional," "five-star," and "top-tier." Guests commend the staff for being "impeccable, cordial, personalized," and going "above and beyond" to ensure a memorable stay. Specific mentions include the helpfulness of reception and bellmen, with one guest noting "unbelievable service from long term ground level staff. Their professionalism and humanity were top notch." The immediate response from the front desk and the appreciation for turndown service and housekeeping further underscore the hotel's commitment to hospitality.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Newbury Boston boasts an enviable and "prime location" in the heart of the historic Back Bay neighborhood, situated at the prominent intersection of Newbury and Arlington Streets. It directly overlooks the iconic Boston Public Garden and Boston Common, providing picturesque views and immediate access to green spaces. The hotel is surrounded by the upscale boutiques, art galleries, and trendy cafes of Newbury Street, making it a hub for shopping and dining. Many of Boston's major attractions, including the Boston Public Library, the Freedom Trail, Copley Square, and Beacon Hill, are within easy walking distance. For public transportation, the Arlington Metro station is just a short walk away, and Back Bay Station is an 8-minute walk, offering convenient access to other parts of the city. Boston Logan International Airport is approximately a 10-minute drive away. While driving is generally not recommended in Boston, the hotel provides valet parking and an onsite car park for guests (with charges).
7. Value & Pricing
As a Michelin Two-Keys property, The Newbury Boston is positioned as a "top-tier luxury" hotel, and its pricing reflects this exclusivity. Room rates typically range from around $297 to over $540 per night, depending on the room type and season. While some guests consider it to offer "exceptional value for money" given the level of service and amenities, it is generally understood to be a higher-priced luxury option. Additional costs to consider include valet parking at $85.00 per night and a pet fee of $100.00 per stay. Dining, particularly breakfast at Contessa and in-room dining, is often noted as being expensive. However, various packages and offers, such as a complimentary third night or food and beverage credits, can enhance the value for discerning travelers.
8. Common Complaints
Despite overwhelming positive feedback, a few recurring criticisms have been noted:
- Dining Costs/Value: While Contessa is highly praised for its ambiance and views, some guests have found breakfast there to be overpriced, with occasional comments on the quality and variety not always matching the high cost.
- Restaurant Service: Isolated incidents of less-than-impressed service have been reported at Contessa, particularly regarding initial greetings or seating for drinks.
- In-Room Minibar: The in-room minibar items are considered very expensive, and the absence of a mini-fridge for personal items is a minor point of contention for some.
- Check-in Experience: A few guests have reported a "lackluster" or slightly disorganized check-in process, such as vacuuming in the lobby during arrival or a delay in being greeted.
- Library Lounge Ambiance: While aesthetically stunning, the Library Lounge can occasionally be filled with noisy groups from conferences, detracting from its intended tranquil atmosphere.

I was here in Feb 2026 for a business meeting. This was my first time at this property. Usually not a place I pick when in Boston. This is a historic property. The charm to match and the local area history to back it up. Right across from Boston Common (park) and on Newbury Street within walking distance of some upscale stores including a rear access to the Tiffany store itself. I was impressed wi...

Excellent hotel on all counts. Very thoughtful service from everyone in the hotel from front desk, bellman and fireplace butlers. Andrew at front desk had great restaurant recommendations and set the tone from check in to check out. The Street Bar is a great amenity and it's the same kitchen for room service. Hotel is pricey but worth it.

When we stayed we discovered that all but one floor of rooms(10th floor) are pet accessible, which is not made explicit on the website. Please take note when booking Staff are friendly, professional and helpful within the hotel. Rooms ar...

We were staying on Leaders' Club points earned during European business trips. Overall, the service here was on par with a 3-star US chain hotel. We had high hopes for this stay, given our experiences at their other hotels. We were disappointed. It took over an hour to receive our small carry-on luggage, which we left at the front desk when we checked in. In the library lounge (which was freezing)...
