Expert Review: Thompson Zihuatanejo
Thompson Zihuatanejo, a Michelin Key Selected property, is consistently praised as a premier luxury beachfront resort in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, known for its sophisticated style, attentive service, and stunning location on Playa La Ropa.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Thompson Zihuatanejo is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as wonderful, exceptional, and relaxing. It holds a "Wonderful" rating of 9.3 out of 10 based on numerous reviews. Many express a strong desire to return, highlighting it as a top choice for an upscale beachfront getaway.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently love several aspects of Thompson Zihuatanejo:
- Service & Staff: The bilingual staff is often described as accommodating, friendly, attentive, and personable, going above and beyond to ensure a pleasant stay.
- Location: The resort boasts an incredible beachfront location directly on Playa La Ropa, one of Zihuatanejo's most beautiful and swimmable beaches. It offers tranquil waters and stunning ocean views.
- Design & Ambiance: The property strikes a balance between upscale ambiance and natural beauty, with a warm, sophisticated, mid-century modern style that incorporates indigenous materials like amber parotta woods and Oaxacan clay fixtures. The boutique size (only 56 rooms and suites) contributes to an uncrowded and laid-back atmosphere.
- Amenities: Guests appreciate the three outdoor pools (including an adults-only pool), a well-equipped 24-hour fitness center, and a variety of complimentary activities such as beach Zumba, yoga, and kayaking. Many suites also feature private plunge pools.
3. Room Quality
The accommodations at Thompson Zihuatanejo are described as stylish, spacious, and comfortable. Rooms and suites offer sweeping ocean views, often framed by coconut trees. The design features a contemporary stamp with modern art, muted fabrics, and a monochrome color scheme, moving away from more traditional Mexican styles. Thoughtful touches include premium bedding, laptop-friendly workspaces, iPod docking stations, minibars, and Nespresso machines. Many rooms come with private balconies or terraces, and select suites feature private infinity plunge pools or direct swim-up access to the adults-only pool. Bathrooms typically feature granite, geometric tiles, designer toiletries, and rainfall showers. Some "suites" are noted to be more like large rooms in their layout.
4. Dining Experience
Dining at Thompson Zihuatanejo is a significant highlight, with two standout restaurants:
- Ceniza: This romantic, dinner-only spot by the beach emphasizes grilled items, fresh seafood, and local ingredients with traditional Mexican influences.
- Hao: An alfresco, oceanfront restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, offering a varied menu of Mexican and international dishes.
Guests rave about the quality and freshness of the food, especially breakfast and seafood tacos. Breakfast at Hao often includes artisanal pastries, cage-free egg dishes, tropical fruit bowls, and Zihua benedicts. In-room dining is also available, offering a refined experience with local flavors. Unique culinary experiences like chef-led cooking classes and "dinner in the wild" are also offered. Some guests, particularly Globalists, noted that complimentary breakfast might have specific ordering rules regarding entrees and drinks.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff receive consistent high praise. They are described as impeccably polite, warm, and attentive, working hard to remember guest preferences. Guests mention staff offering cooling cream for sunburns and ensuring dietary needs are met when guests feel unwell. The staff's ability to speak excellent English is also frequently highlighted as a great help. From the welcome drink and cold towel upon arrival to bellman assistance and explanations of room features, the guest experience is carefully managed.
6. Location & Accessibility
Thompson Zihuatanejo is situated on Playa La Ropa, considered one of the prettiest beaches in the area, ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and strolling. The resort is within walking distance to downtown Zihuatanejo, offering access to local restaurants and shops. It's conveniently located approximately 14-15 km (8 miles) from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH), with taxis and private airport transfers readily available. The proximity to the airport makes it easily accessible for travelers. Nearby attractions include Zihuatanejo Bay, La Madera Beach, and Las Gatas Beach.
7. Value & Pricing
Thompson Zihuatanejo is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects this. Room rates can start from around $278-$390 CAD per night for a standard king room, with suites naturally being more expensive. While generally offering exceptional value for its luxurious experience, guests note that additional fees can add up. There is often a 10% "guest amenity fee" and a mandatory 7-8% service charge, plus taxes, which can add approximately 38% to the room rate. Food and spa services are also noted to be on the pricier side, sometimes compared to "NYC prices." Complimentary breakfast for Globalists might have specific rules.
8. Common Complaints
While generally positive, some recurring issues or criticisms include:
- Additional Fees: The "guest amenity fee" and service charges, often totaling a significant percentage on top of the room rate, are a frequent point of contention, as they cover services often included elsewhere.
- Breakfast Clarity: For those with complimentary breakfast (e.g., Hyatt Globalists), the specific inclusions and limitations of the breakfast can be unclear, leading to unexpected charges for certain items.
- Plunge Pool Temperature: Some guests have reported that the private plunge pools tend to be cold.
- Room Layout (for some suites): A few reviews suggest that some "suites" are more like large rooms, and in some older configurations, bathroom privacy could be an issue.
- Maintenance Concerns (Isolated): Very occasional reports mention minor maintenance issues such as chipping pool tiles or a dirty lagoon, though these seem to be isolated and not representative of the overall immaculate property.
- Beach Chair Availability (High Season): During high season, some guests have noted the need to reserve beach chairs early to ensure availability.
- Limited Craft Beer Options: Oddly, despite the resort's level, some guests have observed a lack of craft beer options, even with local breweries in town.
- Not Strictly Adults-Only: While there is an adult-only pool, the general resort, including restaurants and the main beach area, can have children present, which might not suit those seeking a strictly adults-only experience.

Lovely, very clean property. Francisco is your best Ambassador with a friendly welcoming demeanor and charming personality. His excellent English should put him in management somewhere. Food is excellent and the pools are really relaxing. Front desk staff is also great.

I’ve got to say, I really love this hotel. It’s design-forward, down to earth and generously appointed. From the moment you step into the chic, open air reception area you know you’re in for a treat. The beach in front is wide with plenty of loungers (raise a cute little white flag for service) and multiple pools. Food and beverage options (even the mini-bar), while expensive for the area, are pre...

The rooms are very nice, and the pool and beach areas are enjoyable. However, there is no hot tub, and the food and drinks were not great. Prices are marked up significantly compared to the U.S. Taxis cost about $10 USD no matter where you go, which adds up quickly. Overall, the property itself is nice, but the dining and overall value could be improved.

Thompson managed to ruin our NYE dinner last night with their disastrous buffet. For $1000 dollars for 4 people it was an absolute disgrace. The meat was dry and chewy, the seafood was also terrible and the buffet served you tiny portions that did not match the $200 dollars per person rate. Overall the quality was so below their “luxury” status. The staff were not attentive at all to the point we ...

Definitely the best hotel in Zihua. Location is amazing right on the beach and the rooms are superb. Wish the bed was a bit more comfortable but other than that it may have been my favourite hotel/beach resort I’ve been to. I like that it’s not an all inclusive so you can try to the food around town!

The restaurants here are absolutely amazing. The new Chef is creating an amazing foodie experience for those that attend, probably some of the best dining experiences you can have in Zihuatanejo.
