Expert Review: Playa Viva

Playa Viva, a Michelin Two-Key property located near Zihuatanejo, Mexico, offers an exceptional and unique eco-luxury experience, consistently lauded by guests as a magical and transformative retreat. This sustainable resort stands out for its deep commitment to regenerative practices, stunning natural setting, and highly personalized service, appealing to those seeking to disconnect and reconnect with nature and their values.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

Playa Viva consistently garners overwhelmingly positive reviews, with guests describing it as "heaven on earth" and "one of the most magical places" they have ever stayed. The sentiment is one of profound relaxation, inspiration, and a deep connection to nature and community. Its Michelin Two-Keys designation signifies an exceptional stay with attention to detail in every aspect.

Key Highlights

Guests rave about several standout features:

  • Eco-Conscious & Regenerative Practices: Playa Viva is a pioneer in regenerative travel, boasting one of the highest B-Corp certification scores globally. It operates 100% off-grid with solar power, features an on-site permaculture farm, and runs a vital sea turtle sanctuary where guests can participate in turtle releases.
  • Stunning Natural Location: Nestled on a private, mile-long beach between the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Madre Mountains, the resort offers unspoiled beauty, ocean views, and minimal light pollution for incredible stargazing.
  • Unique Open-Air Design: The architectural design, particularly the iconic treehouses, integrates seamlessly with the environment, offering open-air living that maximizes sea breezes and panoramic views.
  • Wellness Focus: Daily yoga classes in bamboo pavilions, spa services with local products, and meditation classes are central to the guest experience, promoting well-being and a "disconnect to reconnect" philosophy.
  • Community Engagement: The resort actively supports local communities through its farm, a women's plant-processing collective, and an after-school education center.

Room Quality

Playa Viva features 19-20 distinctive accommodations, including beachfront casitas, eco-casitas, and unique treehouses, some resembling manta rays or barrels. These thatched-roof villas are designed for open-air living, with walls often absent to maximize stunning sea views and allow natural ocean breezes to cool the spaces. Rooms are furnished with rustic wooden pieces and locally sourced decor, emphasizing sustainability and a connection to the environment. Most accommodations intentionally lack televisions, mini-bars, and air conditioning to maintain the eco-friendly, low-tech charm, though a newly added "Infinity Casita" features a low-energy cooling system. Guests appreciate the comfort, cleanliness, and thoughtful details, such as woven frond slippers and personalized leaf greetings.

Dining Experience

The dining experience at Playa Viva is all-inclusive and a highlight for many guests. It features healthy, farm-to-table Mexican cuisine with an international influence. A significant portion of the produce, including coconuts, mangoes, and tamarinds, comes directly from the resort's on-site permaculture farm or nearby local growers. Breakfast typically includes continental and buffet options, and the kitchen staff is adept at accommodating various dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options, with authentic care. Meals are often served communally at large wooden tables in the open-air dining hall, fostering a sense of community, though private tables can be requested. The outdoor bar is popular, with the frozen basil margarita being a highly recommended specialty.

Service & Staff

The service at Playa Viva is consistently described as exceptional, personable, familial, and engaging. Staff members, often referred to as "holistic hosts" (who may also lead yoga classes), are known for their warm smiles, high-touch service, and genuine hospitality. Guests frequently highlight feeling incredibly welcome, cared for, and at home, noting the staff's authentic concern and meticulous attention to every detail.

Location & Accessibility

Playa Viva is situated on a private beach within a 200-acre nature reserve, approximately 35-45 minutes south of the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH). The resort's secluded location provides a tranquil "off-the-grid" escape, far removed from mass tourism and light pollution. Airport transfers are typically included for stays of three nights or more. While remote, it's not entirely isolated, offering opportunities for excursions to the nearby small town of Juluchuca and other local attractions. It's important to note that none of the accommodations are fully accessible, though Room 10 (a King EcoCasita) is the most accessible with an entrance ramp.

Value & Pricing

Playa Viva operates on an all-inclusive model, with rates covering meals, airport transfers (for qualifying stays), daily yoga, tips, and a contribution to their Regenerative Trust. Prices vary by room type and season, with eco-casitas starting around $320-$395 USD per night, and more elaborate treehouses or suites like the Dune Manta Treehouse or Tower Room ranging from approximately $820 to $1,050 USD per night. Kids under five stay free. Given the comprehensive inclusions, unique eco-luxury experience, and the resort's impactful mission, guests generally consider it a worthwhile investment for a meaningful and restorative vacation.

Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring points of feedback include:

  • Lack of In-Room Air Conditioning: Most rooms do not have AC, relying on natural breezes. While effective for many, it can be a consideration for those highly sensitive to heat, particularly during hotter months (April to June).
  • No In-Room TV or Wi-Fi: Reflecting its "disconnect to reconnect" philosophy, rooms lack televisions and in-room Wi-Fi, though Wi-Fi is available in common areas.
  • Privacy and Bugs: The open-air design, while stunning, may offer less privacy than traditional hotel rooms, and guests are advised to be aware of insects, with a black light torch provided for scanning paths for scorpions, especially during warmer seasons.
  • Ocean Conditions: The open ocean can have strong swells, and there is no lifeguard, though a beachfront infinity pool provides an alternative for swimming.
  • Minor Concerns on Conservation/Labor: One review, though largely an outlier compared to overall sentiment, raised concerns about the supervision of turtle conservation programs and transparency regarding labor practices. However, the vast majority of feedback praises Playa Viva's extensive efforts in sustainability and community support.

Playa Viva was one of the most comfortable and genuinely different places we have stayed in Mexico. Unlike Tulum or Cancun, it is quiet, uncrowded and focused on nature rather than scene and spectacle. The beach feels private, the atmosphere is calm, and everything is built around sustainability without sacrificing comfort. The eco-design, fresh local food and visible conservation work make the ex...
