Expert Review: The Wauwinet

The Wauwinet, a distinguished Relais & Châteaux property on Nantucket, has earned a coveted One Michelin Key distinction for 2024 and 2025, signifying a very special stay. This luxurious retreat consistently receives high praise for its serene ambiance, exceptional service, and picturesque setting, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a tranquil, adult-oriented getaway.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Wauwinet is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "spectacular" and "wonderful." It holds an exceptional rating of 9.7 on Booking.com, with perfect scores for cleanliness, comfort, and staff. Many highlight its ability to provide a quintessential Nantucket holiday experience, free from the usual signs of mass tourism.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud The Wauwinet for its "Ss": sea, sand, scenery, and service. Key highlights include its secluded and beautiful natural surroundings, with two private beaches offering both bay and Atlantic Ocean access. The impeccable and personalized service, where staff members outnumber guests, is a recurring theme, ensuring a quiet New England professionalism. Amenities such as complimentary bicycle rentals, a free shuttle service to town, and unique boat tours like the "Wauwinet Lady" are also highly appreciated. The relaxing atmosphere, aided by the hotel's adults-only policy (children under 12 are not permitted in the inn building), is a significant draw.

Room Quality

The 32 rooms and four cottages at The Wauwinet are individually decorated in a classic Northeastern country style, featuring calming palettes and a sophisticated charm. While rooms are described as unique, they share a New England aesthetic. Amenities include high-quality Egyptian cotton linens and robes, Crabtree & Evelyn bath products, climate control, HD flat-screen TVs, and fresh flowers. Some rooms and cottages offer beautiful views of Nantucket Bay, with the Coatue Suite particularly noted for its spaciousness, sitting area, king-size bed, and sundeck access. Cottages, while charming and romantic, may have smaller closets and narrow door frames due to their historic nature.

Dining Experience

The on-site restaurant, TOPPER'S, is a major draw and is recognized as one of Nantucket's most acclaimed dining establishments, having received Forbes Travel Guide's Star Award in 2024. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, offering seasonal New England cuisine with a strong emphasis on local seafood, often enjoyed with stunning views of Nantucket Bay. Guests can choose between a formal dining room, a more casual bayside deck, or even arrange for a group lobster bake. Breakfast is consistently praised as delicious, with freshly baked items like lemon ricotta pancakes being a favorite. TOPPER'S also boasts an award-winning wine cellar with over 2,200 labels, recognized by Wine Spectator's "Grand Award." Complimentary coffee and danishes are offered each morning, along with a daily port and cheese hour in the afternoon.

Service & Staff

The service at The Wauwinet is frequently highlighted as outstanding, friendly, and extremely helpful. Guests report feeling "at home" due to the attentive and personable staff, who often go above and beyond, such as decorating rooms for special occasions or singing "happy birthday." From pre-arrival concierge to front desk, restaurant, and shuttle drivers, the staff are knowledgeable about the island and eager to assist with recommendations and activities. The hospitality is characterized by a "quiet New England professionalism."

Location & Accessibility

The Wauwinet is situated on the secluded North-East part of Nantucket Island, nestled between Nantucket Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and a wildlife reserve. This remote location, about nine miles from Nantucket Town, provides a tranquil escape and a sense of being on a private island. While isolated, the hotel offers a complimentary hourly shuttle service to and from town, making attractions and other dining options accessible. The nearest airport, Nantucket Memorial, is approximately a 20-minute taxi ride away. The property itself offers various activities like biking, tennis, kayaking, sailing, and jeep expeditions through the wildlife refuge.

Value & Pricing

The Wauwinet is a luxury property, and its pricing reflects this, with typical room rates varying significantly by season and room type. Recent average prices have been around $370/night, with deals starting from $355/night, but can go much higher, with some queen rooms listed over $1,600 and standard rooms over $2,500. While some past reviews have noted the prices as "exorbitant" for perceived shortcomings, the overwhelming sentiment in recent reviews suggests that guests find the experience, particularly the service and unique setting, to be well worth the cost.

Common Complaints

While generally very positive, some minor criticisms have been noted in the past. These include the atmosphere at Topper's being a bit too formal for some, especially for families with younger children or those seeking a more casual dining experience. Some older reviews mentioned flimsy window shades in cottages and that some complimentary bikes needed upgrading, though renovations have addressed many aspects of the property. The secluded location, while a highlight for many, can also be a minor inconvenience for those who prefer to frequently visit town without relying on the shuttle or renting a car. Additionally, the hotel has an age restriction, not accommodating children under 12 in the inn building, which might be a consideration for families.

I don’t know where to begin to describe how magical the Wauwinet is. The moment I arrived a bellman came out to welcome me and took my bags. I was greeted with a warm smile at the front desk where the check-in was effortless, prompt, and finished off with a glass of sparkling wine. Patrice the concierge was a highlight of my stay. She was always smiling and on top of all my needs, addressing me by...

The Wauwinet always outstanding and delivers a relaxing, low key, peaceful stay during the fall season. The team is always welcoming and friendly when we arrive and throughout our stay. A favorite is the...

We loved our stay at The Wauwinet this July! The entire staff was so welcoming and helpful. We really enjoyed the amenities such as the bikes, private beaches, port / cheese hour, and backgammon in the library. Having Toppers for breakfast and a nightcap (including my pots of tea) was so convenient. If you're spending a lot of time downtown, you might not like the 20 minute drive back and forth, b...

Did not stay here but took the launch over from The White Elephant for lunch. This was a $30pp charge and was a beautiful ride, however, it was windy so you can get sprayed. Lunch was fabulous. We had the Mushroom Risotto and the French Tart. We also had a delicious dessert. Service was 5 Star! Great way to spend the day when in ACK!

I'm a Cape Cod wedding photographer based in Duxbury and shot an amazing proposal at The Wauwinet last weekend. It was the first time I had been on site and was blown away by so many aspects of the venue. First it is extremely beautiful, quiet, private and feels unique. The staff was so helpful, professional and clearly focused on the experience of being there. It was not uptight, it felt like...
