Expert Review: The Varsity Hotel & Spa
The Varsity Hotel & Spa, Cambridge: A Comprehensive Review
The Varsity Hotel & Spa in Cambridge, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a distinctive blend of modern luxury and historic charm, frequently lauded for its prime riverside location, impressive rooftop views, and dedicated service. While generally receiving "Very Good" to "Excellent" ratings across various platforms, some guests have noted minor issues regarding noise and certain aspects of the facilities.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Varsity Hotel & Spa is overwhelmingly positive, with an average score often in the "Very Good" range (e.g., 8.4 out of 10 on Booking.com and 8.8 out of 10 on Hotels.com). Guests frequently describe their stay as "special" and "wonderful," appreciating the high standards and stylish ambiance. The hotel is considered one of the best in Cambridge for a luxurious UK break.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight several standout features:
- Location: The hotel's central position next to the River Cam and in close proximity to major colleges like Magdalene, St. John's, Trinity, and Jesus College is a major draw. It's ideal for sightseeing, punting, shopping, and experiencing Cambridge's nightlife.
- Rooftop Terrace & Views: The iconic rooftop terrace and panoramic bar on the sixth floor offer stunning, uninterrupted 360-degree views of the historic Cambridge skyline and college spires, a feature frequently praised by visitors. It's a popular spot for drinks and even celebrity sightings.
- Spa & Wellness: The Glassworks Gym and Spa, located in an adjoining building, is a significant amenity, providing a spa pool, steam room, sauna, hot tub with river views, and a range of Elemis spa treatments and daily fitness classes.
- Service: The attentive, friendly, and helpful staff receive consistent praise for going "above and beyond" to ensure a comfortable and special experience.
3. Room Quality
The Varsity Hotel & Spa features 44-48 uniquely designed rooms, often named after Cambridge colleges, blending modern British design with contemporary elements. Rooms are described as spacious, comfortable, and clean, with many offering floor-to-ceiling windows that provide breathtaking views of the city.
Key room features include:
- Complimentary WiFi, flat-screen TVs (some with Smart TVs after a 2024 refurbishment), and coffee/tea making facilities.
- Private baths, often with walk-in monsoon showers and Elemis toiletries.
- Many rooms boast comfortable beds and premium bedding, with some deluxe rooms and suites offering additional luxuries like under-floor heating, soaking bathtubs (sometimes freestanding in the room), private terraces, and even in-room Apple computers.
- Bathrobes and slippers are typically provided.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel offers two main dining options:
- Six Brasserie: Located on the sixth floor, this panoramic bar and restaurant serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and cocktails with spectacular views of the Cambridge skyline. Breakfast, often included in the room rate, is generally well-regarded, featuring a buffet of fresh fruit, pastries, cheeses, and cereals, along with an à la carte menu for cooked options like Eggs Florentine and pancakes. However, some recent reviews have found breakfast to be underwhelming or noted a lack of vegan options.
- River Bar Steakhouse & Grill: Situated on the ground floor with mezzanine seating overlooking the River Cam, this restaurant focuses on premium cuts of beef, grilled meats, and fish. Service here is often praised, and the food quality is generally very good.
The rooftop bar is also a highlight for cocktails, though access can be weather-dependent due to a lack of cover or heaters.
5. Service & Staff
Service and staff hospitality are consistently rated as excellent. Guests frequently use terms like "welcoming," "friendly," "attentive," and "helpful" to describe the team, from concierge to cleaners. Staff are noted for being accommodating, proactive (e.g., offering complimentary upgrades or late check-outs when possible), and providing helpful recommendations for exploring Cambridge. Valet parking service is also highlighted as efficient and well-managed.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Varsity Hotel & Spa boasts an "absolutely tip top location" in the heart of Cambridge. It's situated directly next to the River Cam and is the closest hotel to several famous colleges, including Magdalene, St. John's, Trinity, and Jesus College, many within a few minutes' walk. Attractions like King's College Chapel, the Grand Arcade shopping centre, and various restaurants, bars, and cafes are all within walking distance. The hotel provides complimentary bicycles for guests to explore the city.
For transport:
- Cambridge train station is not in the city centre, requiring a 10-15 minute taxi ride (around £9) or a short bus journey.
- Valet parking is available for a fee, which is a significant convenience given that parking in Cambridge can be challenging.
7. Value & Pricing
The Varsity Hotel & Spa is positioned as a luxury boutique hotel, and its pricing reflects this. Room rates can range from approximately $173 to $468 depending on the room type and time of booking. While acknowledged as "more expensive than a chain," many guests feel it is "worth every single penny" due to the overall experience, prime location, and added amenities like spa access and an included continental breakfast. Michelin Guide reviews also note its "outstanding blend of quality and value."
8. Common Complaints
While largely positive, some recurring criticisms include:
- Noise Levels: Some guests have expressed disappointment regarding noise, which can affect the overall experience. The noise score on KAYAK is 2.5/10.
- Outdated Facilities/Furniture: A few reviews mention that some facilities or furniture appear "outdated" or that certain fittings, like room keys, feel less modern compared to other luxury elements.
- Spa Crowding/Design: The spa, while highly praised for its features, has sometimes been described as feeling a "little cramped," particularly the hot tub area, and some guests noted a lack of loungers. The one-way glass in the hot tub area has also led to concerns about privacy.
- Breakfast Inconsistencies: While generally good, some recent feedback has cited breakfast as "underwhelming" or lacking in variety, particularly for vegan options.
- Slow/Single Lift: A minor complaint notes that the lift can be slow, which is particularly noticeable when general public guests access the rooftop terrace through the hotel.

Especially as I forgot my phone charger and they posted it back to me the next day. Faultless service! Thank you!
