Expert Review: The Langham, London

The Langham, London stands as a distinguished luxury hotel in the heart of London, earning a coveted Michelin Two-Keys designation, which signifies an "exceptional stay" with unique character, charm, and meticulous care.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Langham, London is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a quintessential London luxury hotel that consistently exceeds expectations. Reviewers often praise its blend of historic grandeur with contemporary comfort, creating a "homely" yet opulent atmosphere.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud The Langham for its exceptional service, prime location, and elegant design. The hotel's renowned afternoon tea at Palm Court, considered the birthplace of the tradition, is a significant draw. The Chuan Spa, featuring a swimming pool ingeniously located in an old bank vault, along with a modern fitness center, is another highlight offering a serene escape. The hotel is also praised for being remarkably family-friendly, offering specific amenities and a welcoming attitude towards children.

Room Quality

The Langham boasts 380 elegantly appointed rooms and suites that skillfully blend Victorian aesthetics with modern conveniences. A variety of room types are available, from Classic Double to spacious One-Bedroom Residences. Guests often find the rooms to be well-sized and thoughtfully appointed, with tasteful updates and clean color schemes. In-room amenities typically include air conditioning, plush bathrobes, mini-bars, Nespresso machines, complimentary Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Some bathrooms feature large marble finishes and separate showers. While generally luxurious, some older rooms might feel slightly traditional, and a few guests have expressed a desire for more modern technological updates, such as USB-C ports near bedsides.

Dining Experience

The hotel offers a diverse and high-quality dining landscape. Roux at The Landau serves contemporary European cuisine, while the award-winning Artesian is celebrated for its innovative cocktails. The Wigmore provides a refined British tavern experience. The Palm Court is the iconic setting for the hotel's famous afternoon tea, and also hosts breakfast and evening dining with a menu inspired by European grand cafés. Breakfast options range from a buffet to à la carte selections and in-room dining. While afternoon tea is consistently lauded, some guests have noted that the breakfast buffet choices at Palm Court could be perceived as limited for a hotel of this caliber. There has been an isolated report of disappointing quality for some cooked breakfast items.

Service & Staff

The service and staff at The Langham are frequently highlighted as a standout feature. Guests consistently describe the team as attentive, professional, friendly, and exceptionally welcoming, often going "the extra mile" to ensure a memorable stay. The presence of "Service Stylists" dressed in branded suits and charismatic doormen contributes to a personalized and cozy atmosphere. While overwhelmingly positive, a few isolated comments have mentioned less attentive reception or concierge service, or a less grand arrival experience compared to other five-star establishments.

Location & Accessibility

The Langham, London boasts an enviable central location in Marylebone, at the top of Regent Street, within London's vibrant West End. This prime position offers easy access to premier shopping districts like Oxford Street, Bond Street, and Regent Street, as well as cultural attractions such as The British Museum, Madame Tussauds, and the West End's renowned theaters. Public transportation is highly accessible, with Oxford Circus Tube Station just a 5-minute walk away. The hotel provides valet parking, though guests should be aware it is located within London's Congestion Charge Zone. The historic property makes concerted efforts to be inclusive, offering accessible features and services for guests with mobility issues.

Value & Pricing

As a luxury five-star property and a Michelin Two-Keys hotel, The Langham, London commands premium pricing, with standard room rates typically ranging from £500 to over £900 per night (or approximately $700 to $1,350 USD). While undeniably expensive, many guests consider the overall experience, quality of service, and extensive amenities to be well worth the cost. Booking through luxury travel portals or advisors can sometimes unlock additional benefits such as complimentary breakfast or room upgrades.

Common Complaints

While generally highly rated, some recurring criticisms include certain rooms feeling somewhat old-fashioned in decor, and a desire for more modern in-room technology, such as USB-C charging ports. Occasional inconsistencies have been noted regarding breakfast quality. Some guests have experienced minor issues with reception or concierge attentiveness, or a less personalized welcome upon arrival. Specific room-related complaints, though infrequent, have included a defective mattress or lack of individual temperature control. The high price of the afternoon tea has also been mentioned. Additionally, some older rooms may feature showers within bathtubs, and shower pressure has been noted as weak in some instances.

I have been most blown away by the concierge team and the housekeeping team. Got help with a personal urgent task in minutes making it easy for me to continue working. And on housekeeping My room was not a great state. When I came back to it from the day it was STUNNING. So...

My best experience staying in London for official trip. The room service was amazing, my room was always clean and never disturbed me. Two important things I would like give Kudos: 1. They realized that I drink a lot of water so room service placed 2 bottles, I love that! 2. I forgot my phone on the counter during checkout and team which welcome you on the entrance came chasing me, amazing team 😊

We hired a few boardrooms for meetings with some of our clients. Spacious and well equiped rooms, with great catering. Also had a few drinks at the beautiful bar.

I and my family had a great time visiting the Langham. Corina was an absolute delight. She took care of us very well and has a good sense of humour. The Langham is blessed to have her.
