Expert Review: L'oscar London

L'oscar London, a one-Michelin Key property, is consistently celebrated as a luxurious and opulent boutique hotel that offers a unique and memorable stay in the heart of London.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

L'oscar London enjoys an overwhelmingly positive sentiment and a high overall rating, with a guest score of 19.6 out of 20 from verified Michelin Guide guests. Guests frequently laud its stylish decor, luxurious ambiance, and exceptional service, often expressing a strong desire to return. The hotel's prestigious one-Michelin Key award, introduced in October 2024, recognizes its excellence in architecture, service, character, and overall guest experience, marking it as one of the most outstanding hotels in the UK.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enamored with L'oscar London's captivating blend of rich history and opulent, arts-and-crafts-inspired design by Jacques Garcia, featuring distinctive peacock motifs, glass birds, and butterflies throughout. The hotel's central and convenient location is a major draw, providing a quiet refuge amidst the city's hustle. Exceptional and attentive staff service is a recurring highlight, along with the comfortable beds and spacious, beautifully designed rooms. The hotel's excellent dining options further contribute to its appeal.

3. Room Quality

The rooms and suites at L'oscar London are consistently described as exceptionally spacious and exquisitely designed, showcasing a classical, sumptuous, yet contemporary style. French designer Jacques Garcia's vision is evident in the hyper-saturated jewel tones, Art Deco elegance, and pervasive birds-and-butterflies motifs. Guests praise the comfort of the beds, high-quality linens, stunning high ceilings, original cornicing, and elegant fireplaces. Bathrooms are equally indulgent, featuring walk-in showers, deep soaking tubs, double sinks, and luxury Roja toiletries. Standard amenities typically include a flat-screen TV, minibar, Nespresso coffee machine, and complimentary bottled water.

4. Dining Experience

L'oscar Restaurant is a bustling and luxurious heart of the hotel, offering delectable breakfasts, bistro-style lunches, and intimate evening dinners. Its opulent setting, inspired by Venetian architecture with a mirrored ceiling and illuminated onyx bar, provides a sophisticated ambiance. Under the guidance of a Michelin-starred head chef, the menu focuses on delicious British produce with a refined French twist. Specific recommendations include the exquisite truffle croque monsieur, spicy salmon tartare, black cod miso, and creative desserts like pineapple tapioca with lime sorbet. Breakfast options feature a full English or healthy alternatives, and room service food is also highly rated by guests. For drinks and a lively atmosphere, the Baptist Bar, housed in the hotel's former octagonal chapel, offers a superb cocktail list and entertainment.

5. Service & Staff

The service at L'oscar London consistently receives glowing reviews, with guests frequently describing the staff as attentive, welcoming, friendly, impeccable, and extremely helpful. Many guests appreciate being treated like family, highlighting a genuine sense of hospitality that sets the hotel apart. Staff members are noted for their responsiveness, even fulfilling off-menu requests and providing excellent room service.

6. Location & Accessibility

L'oscar London boasts a fantastic central location at 2-6 Southampton Row in Holborn, making it ideal for both business and leisure travelers. It offers a quiet refuge while being mere seconds from Holborn tube station (Piccadilly and Central Lines), ensuring excellent transport links. This prime position allows for easy walking access to major attractions such as Covent Garden, Theatreland, the British Museum, and the vibrant shopping and entertainment districts of the West End, Oxford Street, Regent Street, and Soho. The hotel also provides accessibility, with common areas and some guest rooms being wheelchair accessible.

7. Value & Pricing

While the dining options can be pricey, guests often consider the delicious food and exceptional service to be well worth the cost. A standard room typically starts from around £350. Many guests find L'oscar London offers superior value compared to other similarly priced luxury properties in Central London, particularly when benefiting from amenities like room upgrades and food and beverage credits often available through exclusive booking programs.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, some minor points of criticism have been noted. These include a slow lift and, in some instances, a reported lack of coffee facilities in rooms (though Nespresso machines are mentioned elsewhere, suggesting potential inconsistencies or updates). Occasional service inconsistencies or noise levels have also been mentioned by a few guests. One reviewer pointed out a lack of drawers in the rooms, which could be inconvenient for longer stays. Furthermore, while generally praised, one diner found breakfast competent but unmemorable, and another felt the food prices did not always align with the offerings.

Stepping into this hotel for their Christmas Afternoon Tea felt like entering a world of quiet luxury and festive magic. Every detail was exquisitely considered, from the warm, golden interiors to the beautifully curated presentation of each dish. This is a review for the bar only. My mom and I stopped in for a post-theatre drink, and we had the best time. Shout out to Haroon, our bartender, who was so lovely and gave wonderful drink recommendations. My mom was absolutely obsessed with his scotch recommendation! I had the Canterville Thyme drink based on Haroon’s rec - normally not a gin person, but this drink was an 11 out of 10.
