Formerly known as Raithwaite Sandsend, the 19th-century estate has undergone a complete reimagining to redefine luxury hospitality.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Saltmoore is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently praising its luxurious ambiance, excellent staff, beautiful location, and high-quality facilities. It is described as a serene, wellness-led sanctuary offering refined hospitality. Booking.com reviews show high ratings across categories such as location (9.3), cleanliness (9.2), comfort (9.3), and staff (9.0).

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of Saltmoore:

  • Service & Staff: The staff are frequently described as friendly, helpful, welcoming, and brilliant, contributing significantly to a positive guest experience.
  • Location: Its position as a "stone's throw" from Sandsend beach and a few minutes' drive into Whitby is a major draw, offering both coastal beauty and accessibility to the historic town. The estate's 80 acres, with woodlands, a lake, and landscaped gardens, also provide a tranquil setting.
  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel boasts sophisticated and stylish decor, with calming interiors, luxurious furnishings, and thoughtful touches inspired by the surrounding moors and sea. The blend of Victorian-era inspired architecture with a modern makeover is also noted.
  • Amenities: The "Sanctuary at Saltmoore" spa facilities, including an indoor pool, cryo chamber, and various treatments, are a significant highlight for many.

3. Room Quality

Saltmoore offers 72 meticulously designed rooms and suites across two distinct areas: Saltmoore House and The Beach House. Each room is crafted with calming interiors, plush beds (often super-king with Hypnos mattresses), and thoughtful touches for relaxation.

  • Comfort: Beds are consistently described as "ridiculously comfortable" and "dream-inducing emperor beds" with crisp Egyptian cotton sheets and fluffy down bedding.
  • Design: Rooms take aesthetic cues from the natural surroundings, featuring earthy ecru, fern green, sea blue, or gorse-like gold palettes. Examples include the "Snug" rooms with Velux windows for stargazing and "The Beach House" rooms with a relaxed, coastal feel and some even offering outdoor bathtubs. Lavish bathrooms with indulgent walk-in showers and often freestanding tubs, along with high-end amenities like GHD/Dyson hair dryers and Wildsmith products, are common. Many rooms also include state-of-the-art TVs, Roberts Radios, and tea/coffee making facilities.
  • Variety: Accommodation ranges from intimate "Snug" rooms to spacious suites like the "Nest Suite" with reading nooks or the "Orchard Suite" with an outdoor bathtub. Accessible rooms are also available.

4. Dining Experience

Saltmoore offers a diverse dining experience across several venues, with a strong emphasis on seasonal, local produce.

  • The Brasserie: This Michelin Guide Recommended restaurant, located in Saltmoore House, offers a chic, modern setting with an earthy color palette. Executive Chef Adam Maddock, experienced in Michelin-starred kitchens, curates menus with a classic British heart, featuring prime meats cooked on the grill and seasonal local ingredients like Whitby crab and heather honey.
  • Breakfast: Guests describe breakfast as "lovely," "amazing," and "excellent," with high-quality food, large portions, and a fantastic cold buffet. The full English breakfast celebrates nearby suppliers, and inventive options like porridge with a brown sugar brûlée are offered.
  • Other Dining: The Orangerie is a conservatory-style space for light lunches and afternoon tea. A Pizzeria at The Beach House opened in summer, and a fine-dining restaurant called Calluna is slated to open soon. A Wellness Café is also available within The Sanctuary spa for light lunches and smoothies.
  • Sustainability: The hotel utilizes its own no-dig kitchen garden for seasonal produce, highlighting a farm-to-fork approach.

5. Service & Staff

  • Accessibility: The hotel offers accessible rooms with adapted bathrooms, some on the ground floor with walk-in showers, and the main hotel has a lift to all floors, though some stair access may be required. Deafgards can also be provided.

7. Value & Pricing

Saltmoore is positioned as a luxury wellness retreat, and its pricing reflects this. Room rates have been observed to start from approximately £185 and go up to £330 per night for standard rooms, with packages also available. Some sources indicate rooms starting from around £220 a night. While the value for money rating on Booking.com is 7.9, suggesting some guests find it on the higher side, many reviews highlight that the overall experience, luxurious amenities, and high level of service make it worth the cost. Spa access is generally an additional charge (e.g., £45 per person for 2-3 hours), unless booked directly.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are largely positive, a few minor recurring issues have been noted:

  • Spa Access Fees: Some guests might find the additional charge for spa access (not always included in the room rate) as a point of contention.
  • Breakfast Service: One reviewer mentioned that breakfast service, while offering good food, didn't always "deliver" in terms of service.
  • Noise in specific rooms: A guest reported that the "Nest Suite," while superb, could be noisy due to proximity to an A/C, boiler room, or pump, disturbing sleep.
  • Renovations: The development of additional holiday cottages and lodges on the estate is noted as something that might change its character in the future.

I have been a big fan of the Spa at Saltmoore, going quite a few times since it opened. At first it was fantastic and I recommended it to a number of people but my visit yesterday left alot to be desired and showed a marked deterioration in lots of areas. I had booked the evening spa and pizza package and all started well but I noticed a few people complaining about their pizza's, saying they had ...

This time it was a trip to Saltmoore for Sunday roast. It was expensive, I understand that it's a lovely establishment, but we are still on the North East Coast. That being said it was delicious. My partner and I both had the beef for mains and everything was delicious. Following up with crumble for dessert with the best ice cream. The service was phenomenal and it was all in all a great meal out....

We recently stayed at Saltmoore and overall had a pleasant experience, but there were a few areas that could be improved. Rooms: The rooms were clean and finished to a high standard. The walls were very thin, and we could hear everything happening next door. We also had an issue with the hot water being set far too high, but thankfully the maintenance team resolved this promptly. Food: Evening f...

When they arrived, the margherita was mouldy, yes, actually mouldy. After complaining, we then had to chase staff for a follow-up, only to be told the chef had “mixed up the cheese” and accidentally put blue cheese on the margheritas. Unfortunately, t...

We had a wonderful stay at Saltmoore. Despite the heavy snow, the staff were incredibly helpful and went above and beyond to make our stay truly pleasant. We especially loved being taken to restaurants in their Tesla — such a lovely touch. I’m also very grateful to one of the team (I sadly can’t remember her name) who kindly allowed me to fully charge my car, which made a huge difference. The room...

What a stunning place Saltmoore is! We visited for our mini moon and it couldn't have been better. The rooms were stunning and large, the spa was perfect for relaxing and looking out onto the beautiful grounds of the hotel too. Kayleigh on reception was extremely welcoming when we arrived and made sure we comfortable knowing all we needed to about the hotel and local area. We visited the Pizzeria...
