Expert Review: The Island House
The Island House in Nassau, Bahamas, a Michelin Key Selected property, is widely praised for its sophisticated blend of contemporary luxury and authentic island charm, offering guests a tranquil and intimate escape.
Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Island House is overwhelmingly positive, often described as an "exceptional" or "wonderful" property, delivering a "5-star experience." Guests frequently highlight its serene atmosphere, understated elegance, and a sense of "laid back island life with friendly service." It's considered a "secluded, zen, and intimate hotel" perfect for relaxation.
Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several aspects of The Island House:
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel's design is a significant draw, featuring sophisticated and contemporary communal spaces with a strong sense of individuality and local personality. The interiors incorporate local materials like coral stone and Pecky-cyprus, alongside art by local artists.
- Wellness Facilities: A major focus on well-being is evident through its Bamford Spa (the only one in the Bahamas), a 24-hour gym, a half-Olympic lap pool, squash and padel courts, and daily yoga classes.
- Dining Variety: The diverse and high-quality on-site dining options receive frequent praise.
- Private Beach Access: Although not directly on the beach, the hotel provides complimentary shuttle service and access to a nearby private beach club at Old Fort Bay, which guests describe as beautiful and intimate.
- Unique Amenities: The property boasts a 48-seat art-house cinema showing daily releases, adding a distinctive entertainment option.
Room Quality
The 30 rooms and suites at The Island House are described as spacious, comfortable, and beautifully designed. They feature sophisticated and simplistic decor with neutral tones and contemporary natural furnishings. Many rooms include huge patios or private terraces with French doors, offering ocean, pool, or garden views. Bathrooms are notably large, often with freestanding bathtubs and Bamford bath products. Further amenities include unique local art, energy-conserving automated lights, a minibar, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, complimentary bottled water, and a nightly turndown service. Beds are consistently noted for their comfort.
Dining Experience
The Island House offers an impressive array of dining venues:

Service & Staff
The staff and service at The Island House receive high praise for being friendly, attentive, wonderful, and professional. Many guests feel treated "like a neighbor rather than a transaction," appreciating the easy-going vibe and genuine hospitality. However, some reviews indicate concerns about the service quality from certain staff members.
Location & Accessibility
The Island House is situated on Mahogany Hill, Western Road, in Nassau, offering a peaceful and secluded residential feel. It is not directly on the beach but provides complimentary private beach access and shuttle service to Old Fort Bay's private beach. The hotel is conveniently located approximately 15-20 minutes by car from Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS). While a short taxi ride from the airport, it is intentionally "far from Nassau and the main tourist destinations" to maintain its tranquil atmosphere, meaning it's a bit of a drive to the more touristy downtown areas. However, its location balances tranquility with accessibility, allowing guests to explore local attractions and other dining options within driving distance.
Value & Pricing
Room rates for The Island House typically start from around $490, with an average room price of approximately $619. While many guests feel it offers "unbeatable value" for a luxurious experience, others have expressed concerns regarding the overall value for money, particularly concerning dining options and certain amenities. It is generally considered a luxurious property, and its pricing reflects that.
Common Complaints
Recurring criticisms, though relatively few, often point to some inconsistency in service quality from certain staff members. Additionally, while highly valued by many, the hotel's location not being directly beachfront, despite providing private beach access with a shuttle, is sometimes noted as a slight disappointment for those expecting immediate beach proximity. Some guests also raised concerns about the value for money, particularly regarding dining prices.

We had a wonderful 4 night stay at the island house with our 6 month old baby. I loved the size and vibe of this hotel. The beach club that you have access to via the hotel is AMAZING. Just a 5 minute ride in their house car to get there. They said the hotel was full but it always felt empty, never crowded. The pool is dreamy. The saunas and cold plunge are great. Beautiful Pilates studio and gym....

We stayed for 5 nights on holiday in two Pool Suites, which were absolutely beautiful. The hotel itself is stunning — stylish, calm, and set in a really lovely environment. On appearance alone, it has everything you’d expect from a high-end property. Unfortunately, the experience was consistently let down by the poor level of service. Turn-down service was very disappointing, staff generally seem...

Love this place and always have brunch here every Saturday. Service varies, outside always takes longer than inside. Food is always consistent and excellent. Membership required to access the facilities if you're not staying at the hotel.

The rooms are incredibly clean, spacious, and designed in a highly luxurious way. They spared no expense building this place and it shows. Before I get to a quick pros and cons, I want to shout out some special people who hel...
