Expert Review: Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando

Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando, a Michelin Key Selected property in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, offers a captivating blend of colonial charm and modern luxury, set within a historically significant 16th-century building.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando is highly positive, with guests frequently praising its historical ambiance and prime location. It holds an outstanding overall rating of 9.1 on Agoda and an "Excellent" 8.9 rating on Booking.com, with many reviews calling it "wonderful". While the majority of feedback is enthusiastic, some recurring issues temper its five-star aspirations.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently love the hotel's historic design and atmosphere, noting its preserved architectural features like original stone walls, coffered ceilings, and massive arches. The location in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Zona Colonial is a major draw, providing easy access to historic sites. The friendly and attentive staff are frequently highlighted for their hospitality. Amenities such as the outdoor pool, fitness center, and charming courtyards also receive positive mentions. The Imperial Club rooms, offering access to a lounge with snacks and coffee and views of the Ozama River, are considered a premium highlight.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando are generally described as modern, clean, spacious, and comfortable, blending colonial-era aesthetics with contemporary comforts. Many rooms feature tile floors, while some boast original stone walls or rehabilitated timber ceilings, adding to the historic ambiance. Standard in-room amenities include flat-screen televisions, air conditioning, bathrobes, mini-bars, and complimentary WiFi. Despite the overall positive feedback on comfort and design, some guests have noted issues such as a humid smell, non-working WiFi or room phones, and toilet seats that are smaller than the toilet bowl.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel features two restaurants, including Restaurant 1502, specializing in Dominican cuisine, and La Residence, offering international specialties with a French twist. There are also two bars: a Lobby Bar and a Pool Bar. Breakfast receives mixed reviews; many describe it as delicious, great, and outstanding, with a good spread of local and international food. However, some guests have criticized the breakfast experience for being poorly managed or not meeting the standards expected of a five-star hotel.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback on hospitality is largely positive, with numerous mentions of friendly, attentive, courteous, and helpful staff. Many reviewers laud the "exceptional" staff who make an effort to provide excellent service. Individual staff members like Evelyn and Clara Velez have been specifically commended for their prompt, professional, and caring service. Conversely, a few guests have reported instances where staff seemed indifferent or made them feel like a bother when asked for assistance.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is consistently rated as superb. It is nestled in the heart of the Zona Colonial, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on Calle Las Damas, known as the first paved street in the New World. This central position offers unparalleled walkability to numerous historic attractions, including Santa María la Menor Cathedral, Columbus Park, and various museums. The hotel is approximately 30km (a 25-minute drive) from Santo Domingo Airport (SDQ), and transfers can be arranged for a fee.

7. Value & Pricing

Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando is often perceived as offering good value for a luxury property within its historical context. Agoda highlights its average room price of approximately $199, which it considers exceptional value compared to the city's average of $163 per night. KAYAK indicates recent prices ranging from $187 to $217, with an average weeknight price around $207. Expedia shows prices starting from $216 for a 1-night stay. While offering a luxurious experience, some guests felt it did not fully justify a "five-star" designation based on certain service or maintenance issues.

8. Common Complaints

Despite its many strengths, some recurring issues have been noted by guests. These include concerns regarding cleanliness and maintenance in certain areas, such as reports of unclean pools, broken air conditioning, falling wall tiles, and even sightings of cockroaches or rodents in rooms. Service efficiency has also been a point of criticism, with some guests feeling that staff could be more proactive or responsive. The quality and consistency of WiFi in rooms have been raised as a complaint. Finally, while many praise the breakfast, some found it to be poorly managed or not meeting expectations for a hotel of this caliber.

From the moment we entered the hotel we were treated impeccably. Given 2 glasses of champagne while we waited for our room and also helped by a concierge with our luggage and valet parked. Front desk staff spoke Spanish and English, extremely friendly. Our room was simple with the view of the water. It's hard to find a bathtub on our 3 month travels so after just showers it was lovely to soak in a...

Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando has three key factors working for it: Luxury, Location, Service. A doorman opens the entrance to this historical site for you and you instantly see the beauty and detail of the hotel. As you’re escorted to your room you pass the amazing pool and mojito bar, and terraces that sprawl. The rooms are large and the bathroom is spacious as well. For the Americans that love thei...

Very charming hotel with lots of history. It was cool being in a building so old. Great location. Walking distance to a lot of historical sites. Plenty of resturants near by. The only draw back is a very musty smell that lingers in the air and unfortunately will also linger on your clothes. The drain in our sink didnt work well and back flowed. When we complained about it, they sent someone right ...

I highly recommend this hotel to everyone traveling to Santo Domingo. I travel a lot and stay in many hotels, and this is one that truly impressed and amazed me. The location is perfect- right in the historic old town of Santo Domingo and yet it still offers convenient car access directly to the hotel entrance, which is a rare and valuable advantage. From the moment you enter, you can feel a sense...

Loved this hotel. I had a room in the imperial club. This included a separate elevator, 24-hour access to refrigerated drinks sodas, bottled sparkling and spring water, appetizers like mini sandwiches, mixed fruit bowls AND Santo Domingo brand coffee/cappuccino machine. The room was gorgeous. It was located in the 2nd floor over looking the square and above the entrance flags.
