Housed within the beautifully restored Chattanooga Choo Choo Terminal, guests can experience a bygone era of rail travel with contemporary comforts.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Hotel Chalet is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "exceptional" and "superb." Review scores on platforms like Booking.com show high marks across the board, including 9.6 for location, 9.5 for cleanliness, 9.6 for comfort, and 9.3 for staff. Many travelers appreciate the unique experience of staying in converted rail cars and the charming, eclectic atmosphere.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several key aspects of The Hotel Chalet:

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's design, overseen by Trestle Studios and Jenny Bukovec, reimagines the US Railways' history of constructing lodges and chalets, connecting guests to the nearby mountain topography. The Beaux Arts architecture of the original terminal is fully restored, featuring sunlit dome-like skylights and interiors with antique lamps that exude old-world charm. The blend of Appalachian soul and French charm creates a warm and enchanting oasis, with French Nouveau landscaping in the gardens and courtyard.
  • Unique Accommodations: A standout feature is the opportunity to stay in magnificently restored Pullman train carriages from the 1920s and 1960s, offering a truly distinctive experience.
  • Location: The hotel boasts an excellent downtown location, conveniently situated near the Chattanooga Convention Center and within walking distance to numerous restaurants and attractions. Many points of interest, like the Tennessee Aquarium, are easily accessible via a free electric shuttle that picks up in front of the Choo Choo.
  • Amenities: Popular amenities include an outdoor pool with a poolside bar and firepit, a fitness center with Peloton equipment, and free in-room WiFi. Guests also appreciate the coffee shop/cafe on-site.

Room Quality

The rooms at The Hotel Chalet are celebrated for their comfort, unique design, and thoughtful amenities. The 127 guest rooms include both standard hotel rooms and 25 suites housed in restored Pullman train carriages.

  • Train Carriages: These rooms offer a journey back in time, with some boasting Victorian-era designs, original Tiffany Glass pendants, and bentwood dining chairs, while others feature a mid-century modern aesthetic with custom wall coverings, plush sleeper sofas, and scalloped king beds in bold hues of rose, lilac, and lime. Radiant heated bathroom floors are an unexpected and lovely touch in the Sleeper Deluxe carriages.
  • Standard Rooms: Rooms in the main building also carry a retro nostalgia with wall-to-wall patterned carpeting, Italian linens, and rich wood paneling.
  • General Amenities: All rooms typically include complimentary in-room coffee, 55-inch high-definition smart TVs with casting abilities, Bellino Fine Linens & Towels crafted in Italy, hypoallergenic down-alternative pillows and duvets, complimentary high-speed WiFi, hair dryers, steamers, in-room safes, bedside Type C & USB charging stations, and in-room Bluetooth speakers. Luxe bath amenities by The Botanist & The Chemist are also provided. Guests have noted the comfortable beds and excellent water pressure in the showers.

Dining Experience

The hotel's on-site restaurant, Elsie's Daughter, receives high praise. Named after the wife, daughter, and granddaughter of the terminal's architect, it offers French-Belgian dishes with an Appalachian twist, serving brunch, dinner, and happy hour. Reviewers describe the food as outstanding, with delicious drinks and attentive service. Popular brunch recommendations include French toast and chilaquiles. The restaurant's design blends European grandeur with Beaux Arts and Neoclassical styles. Breakfast options are available à la carte or as breakfast to go, and guests have given it a highly-rated score of 8. A coffee bar is also available.

Service & Staff

The service at The Hotel Chalet is consistently highlighted as a strong point. Guests frequently commend the staff for being extremely nice, friendly, helpful, and attentive. Many appreciate the personalized and welcoming approach, with one guest stating that the experience feels "like being welcomed into the home of a longtime friend."

Location & Accessibility

The Hotel Chalet is ideally located in the heart of Chattanooga's Southside neighborhood, nestled between the Tennessee River and the foothills of Appalachia.

  • Nearby Attractions: It is within walking distance of the Chattanooga Convention Center and the Chattanooga Choo Choo Historic District. Other attractions like the Tennessee Aquarium are easily reachable by the free electric shuttle. Guests can explore Gate 11 Distillery and Chattanooga Whiskey nearby, or visit local coffee roasters and bakeries.
  • Transport: The hotel is right next to a bus depot, and a Chattanooga Bike station is also available. Easy transportation to the Riverfront is possible via the free shuttle or a 30-minute walk.

Value & Pricing

The Hotel Chalet is considered to offer good value for its unique experience and amenities, though it leans towards the luxury end. Room rates can vary, with prices starting from approximately $105 to $124. The average room price in the past month was around $158, slightly higher than the city's average of $150, but seen as affordable luxury given the top-notch amenities and service. Guests appreciate that the historical location adds to the chic ambiance and excellent value.

Common Complaints

While overall reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few recurring criticisms have been noted:

  • Breakfast: Some guests expressed disappointment that continental breakfast is not complimentary, especially given the room rates, feeling that it should be included.
  • Parking: There are additional charges for self-parking, which is around $18 per day. Alternatives include street parking or a nearby deck for $9 per day.
  • Sound Insulation in Train Cars: In the train cars, some guests have noted that sound insulation isn't perfect, meaning outside noises can be heard. The MacArthur Suite, while distant from other train cars, is directly in front of the pool, which could be noisy during peak season.

I scheduled a tour with Dian to explore the stunningly renovated Hotel Chalet, and I was eager to see what this charming venue offers for social events and accommodations for my out-of-town guests. The hotel exudes a cozy, moody atmosphere, complemented by exceptional service from the staff and manager. The outdoor space is absolutely gorgeous and perfect for relaxing. The hotel’s restaurant, Elsi...

This is a great getaway in our city. It is well-located, almost anything you want to do in Chattanooga is only 20 minutes drive away. The hotel itself is very clean, the rooms are sizable (we got a suite), and the option for a train car room is unique. The esthetic is, according to the incredibly welcoming concierge Dian Buckley, is a mix of the Shining and the Grand Budapest hotel. The colors are...

Wonderful hotel, charming rail car rooms that are will appointed. Beautiful, heated bathrooms and well positioned in south downtown Chattanooga. Easily walkable to many fun spots including the aquarium. Great coffee in the AM. Molly was our concierge and she helped me handle a sticky parking situation with ease. I would love to stay here again.

Such a fun and unique hotel in the heart of Chattanooga! The decor and ambiance is like taking a step back in time. Even though we didn’t get to stay in a train car the regular rooms were great. The beds were comfy and the bathroom was so beautiful and unique. Service was excellent as well. Highly recommend!

We spoke and had a cake ready for my boyfriend birthday when we arrived at the hotel. Dian also recommended Adelles and a delicious wine there too. Anything you're doing in Chattanooga she'll know the best places and recommendations. We will be bac...

This was my and my daughter's second stay and we booked a train car both trips. It's the perfect destination for us for a mother/daughter get away. My daughter has autism spectrum disorder and she loves everything about the train car experience. We also love the restaurant Elsie's Daughter. We had a bit of a rough start to this stay (issue with the HVAC) but the staff was fantastic in helping ...
