Expert Review: Cliff House Maine
Cliff House Maine, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Key property in Cape Neddick, United States, offers a luxurious coastal escape known for its breathtaking ocean vistas and extensive amenities. Since its architectural reimagination, the resort has solidified its reputation as a premier New England destination.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Cliff House Maine is overwhelmingly positive, often described as a "beautiful resort in an inspiring setting." Guests frequently highlight the "great view," "calm and relaxing" atmosphere, and an "exceptional" overall experience. Its Michelin One-Key distinction signifies a "very special stay," recognizing its excellence in architecture, interior design, service, personality, and contribution to the guest experience. It also holds a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star rating for 2023.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about the stunning ocean views from nearly every vantage point across the 70-acre property, including guest rooms, restaurants, and public spaces. The world-class spa and wellness center is a significant draw, offering treatments with locally sourced ingredients and a serene relaxation room with mesmerizing cliffside views. The resort features multiple pools, including an indoor lap pool, a year-round outdoor heated hot tub (ages 13+), a seasonal outdoor resort pool (ages 13+), and a seasonal outdoor Cove family pool with its own bar and hot tub. Other popular amenities include live entertainment, fire pits, curated art installations, a sculpture garden, and daily activities.
3. Room Quality
Cliff House Maine offers 226 elegantly appointed guest rooms, suites, and even a quintessential New England cottage, many boasting private balconies or terraces with direct ocean or coastal views. Rooms are designed with a modern nautical or elegant coastal theme, featuring thoughtful details like Serta mattresses with Cuddledown comforters and well-appointed bathrooms with Red Flower toiletries. While generally clean and comfortable, some older reviews, prior to major renovations, occasionally described rooms as generic.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at Cliff House Maine is highly praised, focusing on local purveyors and seasonal ingredients.
- The Tiller Restaurant is the signature upscale dining venue, offering brunch and dinner with panoramic ocean views from every table.
- Nubb's Lobster Shack provides a more casual, authentic Maine lobster experience for lunch and dinner, known for lobster rolls and local craft brews.
- Bald Head Coffee Co. serves local gourmet coffee and fresh pastries.
- Portside Café is a seasonal al fresco option with a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Overall, guests frequently commend the delicious food and excellent service in the restaurants.
5. Service & Staff
The staff at Cliff House Maine is generally noted for being friendly, helpful, and efficient. Many guests have experienced attentive service, with some instances of special touches like complimentary treats for anniversaries. However, some recent guest feedback indicates inconsistencies, with reports of service being slow or inattentive in restaurants and staff sometimes lacking familiarity with special booking programs (e.g., Virtuoso benefits). Employee reviews, while not direct guest feedback, occasionally point to management challenges and long hours, which could potentially impact service quality.
6. Location & Accessibility
Perched dramatically atop Bald Head Cliff in Cape Neddick, Cliff House Maine offers an idyllic and somewhat secluded setting with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, including distant views of Nubble Lighthouse. It's conveniently located an hour's drive north of Boston and approximately 40 minutes from Portland, making it accessible for regional travelers. The resort is a short drive from charming coastal towns like York and Ogunquit, which offer additional dining, shopping, and beach access. On-site, guests can enjoy various activities and explore the 70 private oceanfront acres, with options for golf and hiking nearby. Free self-parking and valet parking are available.
7. Value & Pricing
Pricing for Cliff House Maine reflects its luxury status and coveted location. A one-night stay for two adults can start from approximately $569-$584, with an average price around $669 per night. Prices can vary significantly by season; July is typically the most expensive month, seeing up to a 56% price increase, while April tends to be the cheapest with an average 27% decrease. Additionally, there is a daily resort fee of around $38-$41 per room, per night, which covers a range of amenities including Wi-Fi, fitness center access, and use of pools. Some guests, particularly when experiencing service lapses, have expressed that the property can feel overpriced.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, recurring criticisms include occasional slow or inattentive service in restaurants, and some staff members not being fully aware of specific booking program benefits. Some guests have noted that the large property can feel like a "maze" to navigate between different buildings. Older reviews mention potential noise from public areas like the pool, and one recent comment noted that in-room entertainment relied on "old-fashioned cable" instead of streaming services. The family pool, while impressive, is located at the back of the property and lacks the direct oceanfront views of the adults-only pool.

This was a surprise weekend birthday getaway for me that also turned into a proposal. My now fiancé booked this getaway for us and had planned to propose. I later learned all of the staff here were involved in one way or another. From the moment we arrived to the time we checked out, to the hours leading up to the proposal, everything was perfect. The staff were attentive, professional and persona...

We took a little winter getaway here after new years. The family package offered great benefits. The property is stunning and clean. The house keeping staff is top notch and super friendly. However, the indoor pool was quite chilly. And we got two charges to our room number that we did not make. Check your bills!!

During my most recent stay, when I checked out of my room, I accidentally left my credit card in the room. I notified the front desk and froze my card. Less than 24 hours later I got attempted charges o...

Even in winter, the Cliff House is warm and inviting with spectacular views. Great staff, food and cocktails. Outdoor hot and pool are great for a steaming soak followed by a polar bear plunge! And a day spent at the spa is a day well spent!

I’ll change my review when you guys fix rusted pole in the indoor pool. Talk about someone especially a child getting cut by a sharp rusty pole. It’s unsafe. I come here every year for vacation and would had thought you guys would fix this. When you do I’ll change my review back to 5 Stars because I love this place ! So does my family.
