Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Feathers Hotel is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "wonderful, warm, and cozy." Review scores for location, cleanliness, comfort, and staff are particularly high, often reaching 9.7 out of 10. It's seen as a luxurious yet welcoming "country nest," ideal for those seeking a relaxed and pampered escape.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several aspects of The Feathers Hotel:

  • Service & Staff: The staff are repeatedly described as "exemplary," "wonderful, friendly, and helpful," going "above and beyond" to enhance the guest experience. Their genuine warmth and attentiveness are a recurring theme in reviews.
  • Location: The hotel boasts a "perfect location" in the beautiful village of Woodstock, directly on the doorstep of Blenheim Palace, which is often just a 10-minute walk away. It serves as an excellent base for exploring the Cotswolds and is a short drive from Oxford.
  • Design & Ambiance: Housed in a 17th-century building that was originally a row of town homes, the hotel has been recently refurbished (as of 2024 under new ownership), blending its unique historic character with stylish, contemporary features. Antiques, log fires, wood paneling, and a chic, earthy color palette inspired by the Cotswolds create a "cosy with a feel for the history" atmosphere.
  • Amenities: The hotel offers a wonderful bar, multiple dining options, free WiFi, and is notably pet-friendly, providing dedicated rooms, beds, bowls, and treats for four-legged guests.

Room Quality

The 23 individually designed rooms and suites are celebrated for their comfort, thoughtful design, and quality. Guests have described rooms as "beautiful, freshly decorated and very comfy" with "large and welcoming" beds. Specific mentions include "super-comfy king-size beds with crisp cotton sheets and plump pillows" and "nice little touches like cake and toiletries." Suites, in particular, are highlighted as "huge" and luxurious, often featuring freestanding soaking tubs and separate sitting areas. Some rooms maintain the building's historic character with charming features like uneven floors and "quirky secret corridors," successfully blending ancient and modern. Practical amenities such as air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, coffee machines, electric kettles, and complimentary minibars are also appreciated.

Dining Experience

The Feathers Hotel offers a celebrated dining experience across its two main venues: The Nest and The Aviary.

  • The Nest Restaurant: This fine-dining restaurant focuses on seasonal cuisine using fresh, local produce, offering "luxury, modern European expertly crafted dishes." Recent refurbishments have transformed it into a "fun and relaxed room," with the cooking described as "outstanding" and "returning to previous culinary standards." Head Chef Luke Rawicki is praised for his upscale creations, with dishes like stuffed saddle of West Country lamb being a recommendation.
  • The Aviary Bar & Bistro: Offering a more informal setting, The Aviary is known for its sourdough pizzas, signature cocktails, and extensive wine list, with bi-folding doors opening to a multi-level terrace. It's a popular spot for relaxing and enjoying a bite.
  • Breakfast: Breakfasts are consistently lauded as "outstanding," "fresh, local, and seriously tasty," with a full menu served hot and fresh. Guests report being "spoilt for choice" with offerings like sourdough crumpets, buttery scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, and flaky croissants.
  • Afternoon Tea: The hotel also offers a charming afternoon tea.

Staff members are consistently referred to as "friendly, knowledgeable and professional" and "incredibly helpful." The complimentary 24-hour tea service to rooms is another thoughtful touch that enhances the guest experience.

Location & Accessibility

The Feathers Hotel boasts an enviable location in the center of historic Woodstock. Its proximity to Blenheim Palace is a major draw, with guests often walking there in about 10 minutes. The surrounding area offers "quaint shops, cafes," and the charm of the Cotswolds countryside. Oxford is approximately a 20-minute drive away, and Oxford Parkway train station is a 15-minute drive, offering direct trains to London. While there is no dedicated on-site parking directly at the hotel, public parking is available nearby, including a private car park on Hensington Road (a five-minute walk away) for a daily fee.

Some reported rates for a superior room can be around £243 nightly, and deluxe rooms around £432. Guests generally find the experience to be worth the cost, though some reviews indicate that breakfast may be an additional charge (£20 per person per day) which some guests found costly. Overall, the hotel offers a "charming experience with excellent dining options," justifying its pricing for many.

We spent our mini-moon at The Feathers. Our room was very clean, fresh, modern, and cosy. The super king bed was excellent. The communal and bar areas with their comfortable seating and various woodburning stoves were just what we needed to relax. Of particular note was the service - namely Mitchell and Lilliana at the restaurant, and Mandy and Emily on the desk. These people all require recogni...

We recently went to look at a racehorse near Woodstock - We booked this hotel with little/no research and were blown away. Fabulous position, could not fault the room, bar and later dinner. Real bonus for the trip, I hope business brings me back and I cannot recommend it more. Corporate or a cheeky weekend away thanks very much.
